^Thank you!  It is important to note that this was from the Taiwanese, not the US, CDC.

Also, Chinese virologists, who seem to be on top of their game in terms of viral genetics, ascertain that H7N9 MAY have acquired the necessary genes for efficient H2H transmission:

Shanghai, Jan. 11 (CNA) Chinese researchers have discovered mutations in the new strain of avian influenza A, known as H7N9, and have found that the virus has the ability to spread from human to human, the latest issue of China's Southern Metropolis Weekly reported.

George F. Gao, the vice-president of Beijing Institutes of Life Sciences under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and deputy director-general of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told the Weekly that he and his research colleagues have broken down the mechanisms of transmission of the H5N1 and H7N9 avian flu viruses.

I guess the appropriate response is "Oh crap!"

Additional H7N9 cases in China raise alert level

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has raised the travel notice for China’s Fujian Province and several other areas to a “level two” after a H7N9 infection that was reported in the Chinese province was confirmed late on Saturday.

Two cases of H7N9 infections, one in Fujian Province and the other in Jiangsu Province, were confirmed by Chinese health authorities on Saturday.

They were followed by confirmations of seven more cases in Shanghai, Zhejiang Province and Guangdong Province yesterday, bringing the total number of reported bird flu infections to 34 since October last year, four of which were fatal, according to the centers.

One fatality, involving a 38-year-old Fujian man was also the first infection reported from Fujian Province since last fall, the centers said.

China (Hong Kong and Macau excluded) has been listed by the center as a country where travelers are cautioned to take the usual precautions, as designated by the first-level travel notice, “watch.”

The provinces of Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Hunan and Fujian, and the cities of Shanghai and Beijing, have also been issued a level two travel alert due to reported local infections.

The centers said, as of yesterday, a total of 486 suspected cases have been reported in Taiwan since April last year, of which two were confirmed imported H7N9 infections, 481 cleared of infection and three in the process of confirmation.

Wow - this is really starting to ramp up. I'm starting to lose track of all the cases at the pace they're being reported. The odds in favor of a catastrophic reassortment with seasonal flu are increasing dramatically Confused

This is what we expected when the temps came down. If we can believe what's being reported H7N9 has gone from a case a week to a case a day to now an average of two cases a day. It really is hard to keep track but that's mostly because of the way the media tends to confuse the issue. They don't know H1N1 from H5N1 and haven't done the research to be informed much less to inform. They simply repeat what they are told and who knows what China is and isn't saying. I don't believe H7N9 is H2H yet! When influenza goes H2H it doesn't take much time to realize it. Just look at the progression of 2014 H1N1. I do think because of the actions of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, things are worse than we are being told! I read somewhere that Hong Kong's hospitals are at 120% from H1N1 and that they are re-opening the quarantine camp for those exposed to H7N9.
Hold on to your hats and keep searching!!

arirish - I agree. I don't think it's H2H yet but when that happens it'll become apparent pretty quickly, especially if we see something like MERS with healthcare workers starting to get sick.
