There are all sorts of ways the scale of this pandemic has been under-reported. One was China refusing to officially recognise asymptomatic cases even if the testing showed the presence of the virus. Now that the first wave there seems to be over they are starting to open up a little more although the indications are that it will not change their numbers by much.
It comes as China begins easing its restrictions on movement sparking concerns that people who are asymptomatic and infectious will start moving around the country. .... It's latest official figures showed 36 new cases on Tuesday, down from 48 a day earlier. All but one of the cases were imported, bringing the total number of imported cases to 806. Another 130 asymptomatic cases were reported, with officials saying 1,367 such cases were under observation. |

Mixed messages. This is what Bruce Aylward, World Health Organization said last month after he returned from Wuhan. Whole interview on YouTube. In it he denys tip of the iceberg claims and says we have to stop thinking of this in terms of influenza. "QUOTE " Findings indicates that it is not circulating "hidden " in the community in China. Quote 1: More of a surprise, and this is something we still don’t understand, is how little virus there was in the much broader community. Everywhere we went, we tried to find and understand how many tests had been done, how many people were tested, and who were they. In Guangdong province, for example, there were 320,000 tests done in people coming to fever clinics, outpatient clinics. And at the peak of the outbreak, 0.47 percent of those tests were positive. People keep saying [the cases are the] tip of the iceberg. But we couldn’t find that. We found there’s a lot of people who are cases, a lot of close contacts — but not a lot of asymptomatic circulation of this virus in the bigger population. And that’s different from flu. In flu, you’ll find this virus right through the child population, right through blood samples of 20 to 40 percent of the population |

They didnt have antibody testing then so if this becomes more available and is accurate enough, it will be more useful for building up a true picture. Hz |
