100% Cranberry Juice is highly effective for either Kidney or urinary tract infections. Please don't confuse it with the juice which contains only about 10%. You can also use cranberry pills if you want to stay away from the sugar in hte juice.

I have a long history with kidney problems, have coded twice. I keep cranberry juice and drink it at the first sign of a problem. Kidney infection is caused by a virus which goes dormant in the body, so can recur. The bug does rear its head from time to time, but I han't seen the inside of a hospital because of it in over a decade.

I also have frequent kidney infections and was told be a urologist to drink cranberry juice. Femvet, you are correct to make sure it ISN'T the kind of juice that contains only "10% juice".  It really has made a difference, and is definitely worth stocking up on!!!

I produce kidney stones in my spare time, which are
reluctant to leave me, so I can offer you my two-cents. The subject might
be of some interest to anyone wishing to avoid or ameliorate pain
simailar to childbirth, caused by kidney stones or infections.

Avoid foods containing high amounts of calcium carbonate, chocolate
and spincach are high on the list. Almost everything contains calcium
carbonate - the above are the worst culprists. Forget what the
nephrologist tells you, you can't ever drink enough water to prevent this
from happening, but the following might help, which I recently
discovered.

Start taking lactobacillus acipdophillus (sp?) supplements, I chatted with
researchers about this one. It's cutting edge. It helps reduce stone
formations. The FDA is going to approve a similar product shortly.

If you do have an acute attack start taking an over-the-counter called
"Mannose" made by the Solray Comapny (there are others). Mannose is a
form of sugar, that if consumed lines the ureters, acting as a competitive
ligand, preventing bad bacteria from latching on. This helps to ameliorate
excruciating pain. The Solray product comes with Cranberry extract. Take
it as a prevented measure. If you develop full blow renal cholic, you'll
need to take 3-4 grams every 4-hours. This may help if you don't have
access to a urologist and you want to preserve one or both of your
kidneys.

Continue with the cranberries, but I found that when I was laying in a fetal
position screaming in pain, Mannose worked a lot faster than cranberry
juice. If you don't have anything else get a prescription for oral "Torodal",
(NSAID) it will work quickly, when narcotics don't. Don't take it for more
than 7-days, it will cause kidney damage, it's safe otherwise.

P.S. Ocean Spray is the best. Cranberries are the main ingredient. Get the
red cranberry juice, not the white Ocean Spray. You can also purchase
cranberry extract. Do yourself a favour get Mannose and lactobacillus as
well, especially without access to a nephrologist or a lithortriptor.
My 2-cents.

Please forgive me if I'm not posting this question in the right place but I'm trying to find a "official" suggestion on the web that I can print off and take to my family doctor that will support my request that he give me a 90 day prescription of my family meds. I know that I have seen this come up somewhere but at the time I saw it I was not as concerned about this panflu potential. Better late than never.

Hi Femvet ,  my 7 year old daughter has just gone through blood tests , full x-rays of near every organ all seems to be okay , she has been so sick with urinary tract infections.  She also took a reaction to her medicine . The bug you speak of , what triggers it to flare up in you ?   She seems to have a loose tooth at the same time as getting sick .  How much cranberry juice is needed to assist with the condition for you?    Could you share a little of how you where sick ?   It's every couple of weeks for her , last time being the worst ,  she didn't move for days , three weeks sick .   Thanks Femvet .

I realize that I am posting new to some older posts but if anyone checks here maybe this will help. I have a back ground in herbal medicine--dating back to my cherokee grandmother who taught me what I know now before she died--I am not yet credentialed but am pursuing my Doctor of Naturopathic medicine and have helped people with some of these problems because I care and do not wish to see people suffer needlessly if possible. Since I am not credentialed, I have no legal right to prescribe anything, however I will suggest a couple of things for those suffering with kidney and urinary infections if it can help and they choose. First of all children are very suseptible to this type of things and sometimes teething or any stress at any age can cause symptoms to seem worse even though it is a condition that is with a person all along. It is important to remember that other conditions can come into play--please do not leave out the traditional medicine--an integrated approach is always best. However, please know that cranberry juice is mostly sugar, which can also feed the infection. Please get fresh cranberries from the store and boil them gently until all the skins pop and let cool--use this plain (which is bitter) or cut with honey--It will jell and is very delicious--freeze it and blend it up for a cold treat--children respond to the idea of a treat which is also good food for them if you train them to it. Give as much as the child will have each day for about 4 weeks.--Cranberry is a natural antibiotic and will help to expel bacteria and parisites but is not all encompassing. Stay completely away from exessive refined sugar and any type of sodas, caffein and alcohol. If possible use dandelion greens harvested in (early spring)--just a few leaves or dry and crumble in like a spice, in salads, soups and in small sandwhiches to help with cleansing of the system. Be careful not to upset the system of small children--especially those eating very little but use this if possible--teas are also available. This will help to clean major organs such as the liver and kidneys. Viruses and parasites are very common and can run the immune system down making it hard to fight off infections such as urinary tract infections. Also poor health in general as well as those on atibiotics with various infections can run the system down. Get cranberry capsules if better for your circumstances and add to oatmeal or a hot breakfast cereal. Try to stay away from any medicines that are not neccessary. Give no "traditional cold medications" if possible--they tend to suppress the immune response. You must raise your child's immune response to infection or it will happen again and again. See a good alternative medical practicioner with excellent credentials and recommendations--not an herb store owner, but someone who knows what they are doing and cares. Not all the MD's and DO's know everything. Stay far away from processed foods--an allergy to chemicals or to packaging may be causing a reaction--your child may be sensitive. Consider your environment--could your child be coming into contact with pesticides or poisons? Children are sometimes the most sensitive to these things. OK other things you can do if this doesn't help--olive leaf is a great general kind of help to knock out certain kinds of infections--usually cold related--but don't try it long term-the infections can become used to this treatment.--usually a combination of viral/bacterial treatments which are prescribed are to at first help the pain--1-1/2 tsp in water twice a day --depending on whether adult or child to neutralize the acidity in the urine and ease pain. Then teas made with plantain and marshmallow (found in herb stores) to ease the pain in the urinary tract. Bilberry flushes out the urinary tract and lukewarm yarrow, chamomile, lemon balm and fennel will kill the infection--use in a tea--every 2 hours for an acute infection and 3 times per day for a chronic problem.---hope this help someone.--Best regards--Littleraven

I agree with the cranberry sause I make it and it stopped me from non stop bladder infections.   I now sleep through the night .  At my worst I was getting up five time to pee.

I also make a raw cranberry sause.  IN a blender mix cranberries oranges peices .  some like the peel too  add sugar to taste ..   Its is good with turkey , pork ,  and even chicken. Use right away , its our  favourite holiday rescipe

There is a great medical value  in food .  I make my own jam because it is such a important and usuable way to get natural fruit in my diet.

Cherry jam for arthitis
rassberry for weight
peach for gallbladder
cranberry jam
wildberries for antitoxiant value

iin season I make a small batches of jam with less sugar to be used right away . You need less sugar when your uses it up in a week .

Home made also doesnt have cornsurup which is so bad for us.  I use only cane sugar.

I make cranberries a everyday food.

I am making a concious effort to make everyday meals not just meat and bread , but with several fruits and vegetables all which have medical value

I beleive that obesity also has it cause in eating plain beige food without the colour of fruit and vegetables .
