NORMAN, Okla. —Norman police are responding to a hostage situation that began Monday afternoon.


Police say the situation started shortly before 12:30 p.m. Monday. People were seen leaving the building around 1:15 p.m., but it was unclear if they were the hostages or other employees in the building. Norman police said two large groups of people have been evacuated from the building.

Community Christian School is on lockdown as a result of the hostage situation.

The incident is located near 1800 N Interstate Drive in the old Dillard's building now called Nextep. Traffic on I-35 is backed up because of the situation.

Nextep, one of the businesses in the building, said their employees are safe and have been accounted for and evacuated from the building.

It is unknown how many hostages the suspect has, and his identity is also unknown.

Norman police say the suspect in the hostage situation is contained, but the situation is not resolved.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is assisting Norman police during the situation.

NORMAN, Okla. —Norman police are responding to a hostage situation that began Monday afternoon. Norman police said the man has a pistol. There are at least two hostages and that no injuries have been reported at this time.

The incident is located near 1800 N Interstate Drive in the old Dillard's building now called Nextep.

One of the hostages has been in contact with KOCO via text message. Jennifer McMinn said the suspect wants to talk to the Cleveland County District Attorney. The Cleveland County DA's office has declined to comment on the situation.

I think one of my friends lives in that city, but I haven't heard from him in a while. My other friends live in Tulsa.
