Taken from a BBC site:
The European Union recommendations to cat owners are:
*  to report unusually high numbers of dead birds
*  inform local vets of any dead or sick cats
*  keep cats away from wild birds or poultry
*  keep cats indoors if necessary
*  if cats bring sick or dead birds into the house use plastic gloves to pu the birds in a plastic bag for collection by vets
*  keep away from stray cats and do not touch sick or dead cats or other animals
*  clean litter trays and feeding dishes regularly
*  wash hands often with soap

They also advise keeping dogs on leads at all times outside their homes and do not feed any water birds.

We should remember this once bird flu enters the US
