Finally, our city decided to hold a town hall meeting to discuss bird flu and pandemic scenario!!!  I imagine that it will be well attended and that prep sales will go bazonkers right afterwards.

City officials to hold flu open house June 3
In a worst-case scenario of pandemic influenza, a third of Lincoln could become sick, half the work force absent. Local officials want to share the plans and preparations they’ve been working on since November.

The current threat is that a bird-flu now in Asia and Europe will mutate so that it easily infects humans. Because it’s a novel flu, rates of sickness and death could be much higher than normal.

“How would we maintain a semblance of normalcy,” said Bruce Dart, director of the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department.

“How do you keep the water running? The lights on? Police and fire? Keep the hospitals up and running?”

The public can learn of these plans at an open house Saturday.

Dart and Doug Ahlberg, Lancaster County emergency management director, will provide information and take questions.

“We’re planning for the worst and hoping for the best,” Dart said.

The meeting is a reminder: We’re in this together, he said.

“Here’s what you can do to help yourself,” he said.

“If this comes, it will come in waves.” People should be prepared with three to six weeks of food available.

“We have plans to keep the water running but have some water just in case.”

If you’re taking medications, try to have a 60-day supply on hand rather than 30 days.

“If people aren’t informed, fear becomes an issue,” he said. By providing information now, fears will diminish and things will go better.

The presentation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the F Street Recreation Center.

The only thing worse than a brutal lie is the brutal truth. (M Twain) I waited patiently for the LORD; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit; He set my feet on a rock. Psalm40
