Greetings!
I am a user of essential oils and recently did some research on Anise Star, which is the plant that is used to manufacture Tamiflu. Although, the process to make the acid (active ingredient) from anise star in Tamiflu is patented, some have been successful in making the "acid". Here's a quote from Bulgaria: “Anise may save the people from bird flu,” the DPA news agency reported. Vietnamese scientists have reportedly extracted shikimic acid from star anise and the acid is one of the major components of the only efficient - Tamiflu. My theory is that essential oils distilled from the plant probably capture the active ingredient being pursued by pharmaceuticals and more. I therefore use several drops of Anise Star oil in my beverages each day. Actually, there is no need to use sweeteners when using Anise Star. Stay healthy... MikeR |

We drink a lot of brewed ice tea. A couple of months ago I picked up quite a bit of star anise for that purpose.
Our usual brewed tea consists of oolong, peppermint and star anise. It's wonderful and no need to sweeten as you pointed out. I don't know if it will provide any protection, but it tastes good. |
