We’re seeing some truly bizarre claims about transmission of SARS-CoV-2 out there. Here is a list of dubious or outright false claims to keep an eye out for (we’ll add to the list as we see claims, and keep it pinned):

1. “N95 respirators will not stop the virus.”
This claim seems to be based upon confusion between surgical masks, which will stop droplets, and respirators, which will stop individual virus particles. We wear N95 masks in labs when working with certain agents. They will stop the virus in most circumstances if properly fitted. CDC currently recommends their use in most situations.

2. “The virus is transmitted by aerosols.”
To date, there is little to no significant or reliable evidence for anything other than droplet transmission of the virus. If true aerosol (measles-like) transmission were actually occurring, there would be far more cases, on an order of a magnitude more. There have been some reports that extended exposure to patients in closed areas may lead to to “aerosol” transmission, but there are too many confounding factors to find this reliable.
