Months ago, the thought occurred to me that drinking while under pandemic restrictions would become a problem. I have already terminated one friendship because of their drinking. I realize it's a disease, but one that isn't getting enough attention during this pandemic. It has set the stage for an increase in alcoholism. |

I think when this whole thing is over, Witchy, we're going to hear about a lot of unpleasant things that happened behind closed doors while it was going on. I have written on this site before about my experience with my physically, verbally and sexually abusive stepfather, who also was an alcoholic. He was a steelworker, and one of the most awful time periods with him was when the steel mill he worked at went on strike, and he was home for many weeks until the strike was settled. He wasn't getting paid, (although my mother was working). They were worried about money, he was around all the time and miserable, and suddenly it seemed like my mother was never home. It was summer, so I was home all the time. Not fun. Gonna be a lot of horrifying and sad stories coming out of this time for sure. |

So sorry to hear about your experience as a kid, ViQueen, but I believe you're right. There was great concern here in NYC when the schools closed that kids who had safe haven in school from an abusive home life wouldn't have that haven anymore. I have seen nothing about it in the local media, but I know it has to be happening. |

This past week our radio news had a piece about how, without the restraint of needing to show up to work may who work from home are drinking while they are supposed to be working. I too think we will see many problems from staying at home. Alcohol and abuse are two, other news items talk about increase depression. |

Absolutely! There has been loads of attention to this issue on British media. I hope America has the same. Lockdown must be really tough for some. Glad you came through it all ViQueen. That has to leave a few scars. My thoughts are with you. |

Early in the pandemic, there was a lot of attention to domestic violence being on the upswing, and nowhere to hide for the victims, as they are home with their abusers now. I have not heard word one about kids being home with their abusers. This is the kind of subject that I don't think you hear much proactively about here in America. Seems to always be after the fact, when the damage is done. It is definitely a shame, and yet, the healthcare infrastructure is overwhelmed already with Covid. There are no easy answers. What I said to my mother and some other folks when everything shut down -- I would be surprised if we don't see a baby boomlet out of this, and a surge of abuse cases that couldn't go to the shelter. And some sad stories in about 10 years from those who are children right now. |

ViQueen, You are so strong for speaking out, I admire you, As a male of the speices, i find any form of abuse ,sickening, From, sexual, verbal, rascist, bulling again disabled people, belittling Women.... I condem theses evil people..... I hate the words About VP in waiting Harris..... A woman of colour..... This is the 21st century for Christ's sake..... should not mater what gender, colour, race, sexual orientation, height, you are.... Is you are able and willing to do the job It's yours..... As an aside, It seems to me that Canadians ,and Australians are more likely to heed government directives,in America it seems more are lots of people on about THEIR rights..... They seem not to care for there fellow Americans..... It's like the healthcare issue, Very reluctant to look after the health of your fellow citizens..... Let's not forget the lesson of the good Samaritan....... And I'm an atheist..... But that doesn't mean I'm less of a human being.... Do a little good for someone everyday....😷😉 Keep safe all |

I appreciate all the kind words, folks. The truth is, I always felt it is my responsibility to speak out, that those who are studying these evils, and those who are legislating about them, hear my truth. Back in the 80's, a lot of people wanted to silence people like me, especially about sexual abuse. I wanted to get people more comfortable talking about it, so that we would be heard, and the legislators would get up off their dead @$$e$, and get abuse survivors some justice, and give both abusers and survivors some treatment. |
