DJ The US has (already) 18 cases of the India variant...143 cases found outside India-most 89 in the UK...[url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Lineage_B.1.617[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Lineage_B.1.617In December 2020, a new double mutation strain was discovered in India; by April 2021 it had spread to 'at least eight countries' and had been named B.1.617.[95][96] Among some 15 defining mutations, it has spike mutations P681R, E484Q and L452R,[97] the latter two of which may cause it to easily avoid antibodies.[98] In an update on 15 April 2021, PHE designated B.1.617 as a 'Variant under investigation', VUI-21APR-01.

DJ-The P1 variant is NOT stopped by the UK variant, (The SA variant seems to be stopped if the UK variant is widespread...if the UK variant is not widespread the SA variant will increase...unless stopped by another variant...). It looks like the India variant is also spreading high speed...

It is now getting more realistic that the coming peak of wave 3-due to the UK variant-this month/may soon will see a problem not only of the P1 (Brazil) variant but also from the "India variant"...Hospitals may still be out of capacity when another wave becomes a problem. (The P1 wave did already start...[url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lineage_P.1[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lineage_P.1 with [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lineage_P.1#Statistics[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lineage_P.1#Statistics onderreporting...P1 is already a major problem in the US, Canada, NL, Belgium...)

The Phillipines P3 variant [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Lineage_P.3[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Lineage_P.3 is also becoming a problem; On 12 March it was announced that P.3 had also been detected in Japan.[116][117] On 17 March, the United Kingdom confirmed its first two cases,[118] where PHE termed it VUI-21MAR-02.[

DJ-We do not yet have that much info on the Indian and P3 variant and vaccines...But the numbers are that alarming there is every reason for more measures to stop spreading these variants...

The Health Ministry reports the detection for the first time in Israel of an Indian variant of the coronavirus in seven unvaccinated travelers on their return. It was discovered in genome sequencing, with no clear information on its effects.

Just 30 new covid cases were recorded on Friday. The number of seriously ill in hospitals remained unchanged at 201. Altogether 4,965 have received both vaccine shots. Pfizer Director Albert Bourla estimates that a third shot will be necessary between 6-12 months after the first two. He likened the virus’ characteristic to those of influenza, for which periodic inoculation is necessary to prevent outbreaks.

DJ-We will have to see how the Indian variant spreeds in Israel. One may hope vaccines can stop most/all of new cases. Extra NPI may be needed. DJ-The Dutch view is UK variant was 33% more infectious the the old variant (so the UK variant could spread high speed). The P1 variant is 49% more infectious then the old variant-wich leaves a 16% gap with the UK variant now more dominant...

Vaccines would offer 55-80% protection against P1...but there is simply not that much certainty..DJ-The P1 variant itself is also still showing mutations..(So I repeat-stop spreading the virus...!).

DJ ,

A very worrying trend is the number of variants showing up in younger age groups. Since around the globe these people are NOT vaccinated AND very social active there is a very major risk of further spread.

A good video from Dr. John Campbell [url]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FpMpYJ2AAU[/url] or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FpMpYJ2AAU . Since most of the info in fact is on P1-Brazil and India variants some quotes from under his video;

For Brazil Deaths, 371,889-Deaths in under 9s, 852  Including 518 under I year

0.58% of Brazil's 345,287 Covid deaths to date have been of 0-9 year olds  More than 2,000 children

Not all from MIS

Up to 6 weeks after acute infection Dr Fatima Marinho from the University of São Paolo

Childhood deaths underreported

10 times more deaths by unexplained respiratory syndrome than in previous years

Actual deaths, 2,060 children under nine years old, including 1,302 babies

Factors High case numbers Limited testing in children

-Poverty and access to care

-Crowded poor accommodation

-Background malnutrition

-Late diagnosis and care

-Currently no vaccination under 16 years

-Differential presentation A child has a lot more diarrhoea, a lot more abdominal pain, and chest pain, than the classic Covid picture.

Because there is a delay in diagnosis, when the child arrives at the hospital they are in a serious condition and can end up complicating - and dying

DJ  (MIS=Multi Inflamatory Syndrome) [url]https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-56696907[/url] or https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-56696907

She first suspected something was wrong when Lucas, always a good eater, lost his appetite.

At first Jessika wondered if he was teething. Lucas's godmother, a nurse, suggested that he might just have a sore throat. But after he developed a fever, then fatigue and slightly laboured breathing, Jessika took him to hospital, and asked for him to be tested for Covid.

"The doctor put on the oximeter. Lucas's levels were 86%. Now I know that is not normal," says Jessika.

But he was not feverish, so the doctor said: "My dear, don't worry. There's no need for a Covid test. It's probably just a minor sore throat."

He told Jessika that Covid-19 was rare in children, gave her some antibiotics and sent her home. Despite her misgivings, there was no option to have Lucas tested privately at the time.

Jessika says that some of his symptoms dissipated at the end of his 10-day antibiotics course, but the tiredness remained - as did her concerns about coronavirus.

This was May 2020, and the coronavirus epidemic was growing. Two people had already died in her town, Tamboril in Ceará, north-east Brazil. "Everyone knows each other here. The town was in shock."

Jessika's husband Israel was worried that another hospital visit would increase the risk that she and Lucas would become infected with the virus.

But the weeks went by, and Lucas became sleepier and sleepier. Finally on 3 June, Lucas vomited over and over again after eating lunch, and Jessika knew she had to act.

They returned to their local hospital, where the doctor tested Lucas for Covid, to rule it out.

Lucas's godmother, who worked there, broke the news to the couple that his test result was positive.

"At the time, the hospital did not even have a resuscitator," says Jessika.

Lucas was transferred to a paediatric intensive care unit in Sobral, over two hours away, where he was diagnosed with a condition called multi-system inflammatory syndrome (MIS).

DJ-There is a "dogma" "children do not get (severe) Covid19" . Brazil is maybe the first country reporting-in fact-thousends of children (under 18 y/o) dying from Covid19-linked to the P1 variant.

In Chile Chinese a.o. vaccinations/lock downs etc. are slowing down the P1 variant (DJ-and that is good-welcome news) !

Dr.J.C. also mentions India where cases are going exponential-most likely also in younger age groups. Brazil, India may have a younger population but even if you correct for that it is clear new variants show to be og HIGH RISK !!! for younger-often not vaccinated-people !

Dr.J.C. also mentions a lot of air travel still from India a.o. to the UK...so the India variant is spreading further...[url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Lineage_B.1.617[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Lineage_B.1.617In October 2020, a new double mutation variant was discovered in India, which was named B.1.617. There were very few detections until January 2021 and by April it had spread to at least 20 countries in all continents except Antarctica and South America.[98][99][100] Among some 15 defining mutations, it has spike mutations P681R, E484Q[101] and L452R,[102] the latter two of which may cause it to easily avoid antibodies.[103] In an update on 15 April 2021, PHE designated B.1.617 as a 'Variant under investigation', VUI-21APR-01.

DJ-India is now in an exponential phase of the India-variant, basicly cases exploding...The P1 variant is now widespread and increasing-even "pushing aside" the UK variant...I did not yet mention the P3 variant [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Lineage_P.3[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Lineage_P.3 First detected in the Phillippines-now also a.o. showing up in the UK, Japan etc...

We have to STOP SPREADING THESE VARIANTS !!!!! UK did very well with vaccinations but could be ruining it by importing variants. New variants spreading in a vaccinated population will result in variants not being stopped by the now used vaccinations...

What are we doing ? We have brains to think !

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

The problem is we sometimes let our brains do so many more other things besides critical thinking, and sometimes our brains do things that actively prevent sound, constructive, critical thinking.

DJ-While the "dutch government" (or claiming to be such...) is reopening with hospitals in crisis, R0>1, increasing hospital cases...another study on spread/reinfections in Brazil [url]https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/internet-communication/avian-flu-diary/913268-eid-journal-reinfection-viral-shedding-of-hcw-s-with-non-voc-covid-brazil-2020[/url] or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/internet-communication/avian-flu-diary/913268-eid-journal-reinfection-viral-shedding-of-hcw-s-with-non-voc-covid-brazil-2020

Just over a month ago, in Denmark SSI: Assessment of Protection Against Reinfection with SARS-CoV-2the Statens Serum Institut published their report on 4 million Danes who received multiple PCR tests in 2020. From that researchers calculated the average person is about 80% protected at in the short term - against reinfection with COVID-19.

Among those aged 65 and over, however, that protection was estimated to be only 47%.

This protection was assumed to last at least 6 months. Of note, these results were based on the older, `wild type' COVID, not the more recently emerged variants carrying the E484K mutation, and so these numbers may not hold going forward.

-

All of which brings us to a new report, published yesterday in the CDC's EID Journal, that looks at COVID reinfections among 4 healthcare workers in Brazil during 2020, including their clinical course, and analysis of viral shedding.

Of note, none of these reinfections involved the B.1.1.7, P.1, P.2 or any other recognized VOC (Variant of Concern).

While you'll want to read the complete report (below), the takeaway is that prior infection doesn't necessarily produce durable immunity. Anyone who eschews masks, social distancing, or the vaccine because they've already had COVID - and assume themselves to be immune - could have a nasty surprise ahead.

DJ-There is every reason for STRICT NPI !!! We have to stop spreading stupidity...

As many as 2,007 deaths and 2,93,534 cases were recorded in the country.

DJ-Worldometers may have a bit different numbers-but cases in India keep going up...AND more and more countries find the India-variant [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lineage_B.1.617[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lineage_B.1.617

There may be some discussion on how infective the P1 and India variant are...but there should be NO discussion on the need to stop them !

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

DJ-Two points India variant and Texas antibody resistant variant;

1-[url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lineage_B.1.617[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lineage_B.1.617 To understand how the India variant can explode-now most in India but very likely soon also outside India one has to look at three mutations;

[url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#E484Q[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#E484QIndia is seeing a significant surge of COVID-19 starting 2021 caused by a "double mutant". This "double mutant" strain has been named B.1.617. E484Q is a key mutation in this strain that enhances ACE2 receptor binding ability and reduces existing antibodies from attaching to this mutated, hence differently folded, spike protein

[url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#L452R[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#L452R ;L452R, some studies show, could even make the coronavirus resistant to T cells, that are class of cells necessary to target and destroy virus-infected cells. They are different from antibodies that are useful in blocking coronavirus particles and preventing it from proliferating

There is also a third defining mutation: P681R. This is a mutation at position 681, a proline-to-arginine substitution, which according to William A. Haseltine may boost cell-level infectivity of the variant "by facilitating cleavage of the S precursor protein to the active S1/S2 configuration"

DJ-Each mutation on its own will have an effect-but the combination of mutations may create a "super virus"...Looking at the development of this pandemic  this new india variant could be part of a proces optimizing the virusspread in its new-human-hosts...

[url]https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/united-states-ab/united-states-covid-19-sars-cov-2-september-13-2020-may-31-2021/913370-new-antibody-resistant-coronavirus-variant-discovered-in-texas-bv-1-variant[/url] or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/united-states-ab/united-states-covid-19-sars-cov-2-september-13-2020-may-31-2021/913370-new-antibody-resistant-coronavirus-variant-discovered-in-texas-bv-1-variant fits in the story...;

Researchers at Texas A&M University this week reported a new strain of the coronavirus called the BV-1.

The BV-1 variant was found in a saliva sample taken from a student who lives off campus and tested positive for the coronavirus on March 5, the university announced Monday.

Researchers have not found the strain in other individuals but called its genetic make-up “concerning” because it may be resistant to antibodies.

DJ-RESISTANT TO ANTIBODIES IS IMMUNITY B_CELLS NOT EFFECTIVE ????

[url]https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/united-states-ab/united-states-covid-19-sars-cov-2-september-13-2020-may-31-2021/913370-new-antibody-resistant-coronavirus-variant-discovered-in-texas-bv-1-variant[/url] or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/united-states-ab/united-states-covid-19-sars-cov-2-september-13-2020-may-31-2021/913370-new-antibody-resistant-coronavirus-variant-discovered-in-texas-bv-1-variant ;

“We do not at present know the full significance of this variant, but it has a combination of mutations similar to other internationally notifiable variants of concern,” Ben Neuman, chief virologist at the university’s Global Health Research Complex, said in a statement.

He added: “This variant combines genetic markers separately associated with rapid spread, severe disease and high resistance to neutralizing antibodies.”

Researchers said the student tested positive for the virus for about a month, “indicating the variant may cause a longer lasting infection than is typical of COVID-19 for adults ages 18-24.”

Scientists said they have alerted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about BV-1, which is named after its origin in the Brazos Valley region of Texas.

Scientists found two triple-mutant varieties in patient samples in four states: Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh. Researchers in the country have dubbed it the "Bengal strain" and say it has the potential to be even more infectious than the double-mutant variant.

This is because three COVID variants have merged to form a new, possibly deadlier variant.

-

The 'triple mutant variant' (also being referred to as the 'Bengal strain' of Covid-19) is reportedly more infectious than other strains.

Reports suggest that while this variant is predominantly circulating in West Bengal, it has also been detected in samples from Delhi and Maharashtra.

DJ-Covid cases in India keep exploding. The reported number of cases may be less then 50% of any realistic number. Even if thes new variants would give the same amount of disease as the UK variant-the problem is in the high number of infections.

[url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Lineage_B.1.618[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Lineage_B.1.618 ; In October 2020, this triple mutant variant was first isolated. It has a mutation called E484K which is the same mutation which South African variant has. It is growing significantly in recent months in West Bengal.[107][108] As of 23 April 2021, the CoV-Lineages database showed 135 sequences detected in India, with single-figure numbers in each of eight other countries worldwide

DJ This is the newer variant. Cases among others in the US, UK, Colombia, Singapore, Italy, Germany, Turkey but given the info is not up to date it may be spread much futher...-april 23-info though..it may take some time before it ends up in a databank link [url]https://cov-lineages.org/lineages/lineage_B.1.618.html[/url] or https://cov-lineages.org/lineages/lineage_B.1.618.html

Although updated a bit less often than the CDC's old variant reporting format (discontinued 4/12), the CDC's new Variant Proportions website expanded coverage from 3 to 20 variant categories, and continues to add new ways to look at the data.

Updated every two weeks (with an interim `adjustment' to the data in the `off week'), this new tool now adds a regional breakdown of variants, as well as a national overview.

DJ-The CDC has not included the India variants-both found in the US. Updating on new variants once in two weeks is "a joke"...Earlier data on variants from the CDC were totally unrealistc...

Triple variant........

How many mutations constitutes a...

"NOVEL VIRUS".......

This is a very nasty virus.......

As it goes on a laboratory leak ,becomes more and more viable, Covid 19 is behaving more and more like something that you would want a bioweapon to behave..... changing at an unusual speed......

Or is it our air travel and movement around the planet that is driving these mutations......

We have never been through a pandemic with international air  travel spreading variants hither and thither.....all over the world........

Take care all 😷😉

While the Brazilian P1 variant of the coronavirus is still living in Brazil, another new mutation may appear. Scientists from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, in Belo Horizonte, discovered a hitherto unknown set of mutations in two patients.

Virologist Renato Santana Aguirre says: “We counted eighteen mutations, a few of which we also see in the well-known Brazilian variants and the British variant.” “But there are also new mutations, which could make it a unique variant.” Only when Santana and his team find these specific mutations in at least three other patients will a new variable be recognized. “We will now conduct additional, specific research here, and in the neighboring countries,” the scientist says.

So it’s a variable: “The most probable parent is P1,” Santana believes.

HMN.19B from the viral clade 19B in France. The 19B viral clade — which includes the D614G variant — was prevalent in late 2019 but had since been rarely observed since early 2020 because of newer viral clades.

The variant is characterized by 18 amino acid mutations — including N501Y, L452R, and H655Y. There is evidence the variant can spread more rapidly than other SARS-CoV-2 strains.

-

Several of its spike substitutions (N501Y, L452R, and H655Y) have been shown to require higher levels of neutralizing antibodies to be controlled, both in vitro and in vivo.”

-

Researchers were alerted to a new SARS-CoV-2 variant of interest on January 21, 2021, from PCR testing of an immunocompromised hospital staff member who presented with headache, fatigue, and rhinitis. Her partner in the same household and two nurses in close contact also tested positive for the variant. All four patients experienced mild symptoms and did not require hospitalization.

-

Four weeks after, researchers identified the HMN.19B variant in the genomic sequencing of 12 people living in Paris who tested positive for COVID-19 infection. This included a prison staff worker working in the northeast area of Paris, three from the hematology department of a hospital, and eight unrelated cases on February 3-23 in different Paris hospitals.

Simultaneously, the National Reference Center for Respiratory Viral Infections in Lyon, France, detected 17 more people with closely related viruses to the HMN.19B variant. The related viruses contained more than seven similar spike protein mutations. Three people were from the greater Paris area, 10 from southeastern France, and 4 from southwestern France.

DJ-In short still limited spread in the way it looks often younger people with most mild symptoms. There proberbly will be a lot of a-symptomatic spread as well.

On the mutations; [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#L452R[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#L452R ;

There has been a significant surge of COVID-19 starting 2021 all across India caused by a "double mutant". This "double mutant" strain has been named B.1.617. L452R is a relevant mutation in this strain that enhances ACE2 receptor binding ability and reduces existing antibodies from attaching to this mutated, hence differently folded, spike protein.

L452R, some studies show, could even make the coronavirus resistant to T cells, that are class of cells necessary to target and destroy virus-infected cells. They are different from antibodies that are useful in blocking coronavirus particles and preventing it from proliferating

and [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#N501Y[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#N501Y ;This change is believed by PHE to increase binding affinity

DJ The H655Y mutation also sounds familiar...when I google for it a.o. [url]https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7324922/[/url] or https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7324922/ shows up...or this one [url]https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7857057/[/url] or https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7857057/ a link to Brazil variant ? (For now I leave it to the experts-but the new French variant may be a mix of India-Brazil mutations ?)

-There was also a N9 variant in Brazil. [url]https://virological.org/t/a-potential-sars-cov-2-variant-of-interest-voi-harboring-mutation-e484k-in-the-spike-protein-was-identified-within-lineage-b-1-1-33-circulating-in-brazil/645[/url] or https://virological.org/t/a-potential-sars-cov-2-variant-of-interest-voi-harboring-mutation-e484k-in-the-spike-protein-was-identified-within-lineage-b-1-1-33-circulating-in-brazil/645 ;

Summary

The SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in Brazil was dominated by two lineages designated as B.1.1.28 and B.1.1.33. Two SARS-CoV-2 variants harboring mutations at the receptor-binding domain of the Spike (S) protein, designated as lineages P.1 and P.2, evolved within lineage B.1.1.28 and are rapidly spreading in Brazil. Lineage P.1 is considered a Variant of Concern (VOC) because of the presence of multiple mutations in the S protein (including K417T, E484K, N501Y), while lineage P.2 only harbors mutation S:E484K and is considered a Variant of Interest (VOI). Here we report the identification of a new SARS-CoV-2 VOI within lineage B.1.1.33 that also harbors mutation S:E484K and was detected in Brazil between November 2020 and February 2021. This VOI displayed four non-synonymous lineage-defining mutations (NSP3:A1711V, NSP6:F36L, S:E484K, and NS7b:E33A) and was designated as lineage N.9. The VOI N.9 probably emerged in August 2020 and has spread across different Brazilian states from the Southeast, South, North and Northeast regions.

-

In this study we identified the emergence of a new VOI (S:E484K) within lineage B.1.1.33 circulating in Brazil. The VOI N.9 displayed a low prevalence (~3%) among all Brazilian SARS-CoV-2 samples analyzed between November 2020 and February 2021, but it is already widely dispersed in the country and comprises a high fraction (35%) of the B.1.1.33 sequences detected in that period. Mutation S:E484K has been identified as one of the most important substitutions that could contribute to immune evasion as confers resistance to several monoclonal antibodies and also reduces the neutralization potency of some polyclonal sera from convalescent and vaccinated individuals (11-13). Mutation S:E484K has emerged independently in multiple VOCs (P.1, B.1.351 and B.1.1.7) and VOIs (P.2 and B.1.526) (14) spreading around the world, and it is probably an example of convergent evolution and ongoing adaptation of the virus to the human host.

DJ-The [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#E484K[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#E484K is "well known"; It is nicknamed "Eeek".[139]

-

E484K has been reported to be an escape mutation (i.e., a mutation that improves a virus's ability to evade the host's immune system[147][148]) from at least one form of monoclonal antibody against SARS-CoV-2, indicating there may be a "possible change in antigenicity".[149] The P.1. lineage described in Japan and Manaus,[118] the P.2 lineage (also known as B.1.1.28.2 lineage, Brazil)[121] and 501.V2 (South Africa) exhibit this mutation.[149] A limited number of B.1.1.7 genomes with E484K mutation have also been detected.[150] Monoclonal and serum-derived antibodies are reported to be from 10 to 60 times less effective in neutralizing virus bearing the E484K mutation.[151][35] On 2 February 2021, medical scientists in the United Kingdom reported the detection of E484K in 11 samples (out of 214,000 samples), a mutation that may compromise current vaccine effectiveness

DJ-"evading immunity" is not good ! N9 is a variant inside "the P1 family-now also including the former P2 variant"...[url]https://dagbladdewest.com/2021/04/27/butantan-detecteert-drie-nieuwe-covid-varianten-in-sao-paulo/[/url] or https://dagbladdewest.com/2021/04/27/butantan-detecteert-drie-nieuwe-covid-varianten-in-sao-paulo/ has some more info (Paper from Suriname in Dutch-google translate does a great job !)

In general there may be lots of variants by now often stopped by main new variants and influencing their further development. In general also by now variants will react on vaccine/natural immunity since they need to get into a host for reproduction...So immunity selection will see a rise of variants getting better and better in evading immunity-with some very likely already getting resistent...able to evade most immunity..(maybe those with maximum immunity may be feeling safe-from a month to 5 to 6 months after vaccination, severe natural infection ???).

Again I am NOT an expert and hope I am wrong ! We do not have a realistic idea of how the variants are developing in Latin America, Africa or most of Asia with variants already spread all over the globe...We need much better sequencing...!

The idea is summer and vaccines will save us...but that idea is very likely very wrong !!!!

[url]https://inews.co.uk/news/scientists-fear-possible-delay-end-lockdown-uk-cases-india-variant-triple-one-week-998811[/url] or https://inews.co.uk/news/scientists-fear-possible-delay-end-lockdown-uk-cases-india-variant-triple-one-week-998811 ;

UK cases of the highly transmissible Indian variant have more than tripled in a week, new figures are expected to confirm on Thursday, as scientists advising the government fear the final stage out of lockdown could be delayed due to the surge.

Boris Johnson has warned that the strain, B1617.2, one of three mutations fuelling the devastating epidemic in India, is “of increasing concern here in the UK”.

Public health officials and ministers are stepping up efforts to curb infections of the variant in areas where there have been the greatest increases, including Bolton, Greater Manchester, where secondary school pupils could be told to continue to wear face masks after the policy is dropped for the rest of England from next Monday.
Members of Sage have been called to an urgent meeting on Thursday to assess the threat.

-

The consortium of scientists tracking new variants, COG-UK, has identified a total of 1723 cases of B1617.2, and while some of these will be duplicates, if the figure is confirmed by Public Health England in its weekly update this would be more than three times last week’s number of 520.

B1617.2 was designated as a variant of concern a week ago, and two weeks ago there were 202 cases. Scientists believe the variant could be more transmissible than the Kent variant, but that it will also not be resistant to vaccines.

-

Ministers have not ruled out introducing local lockdowns in areas where the Indian variant is increasing.
Besides Bolton, there are clusters in Blackburn and evidence of rising community transmission in parts of London.

Secondary school pupils in Bolton could be told by their teachers to continue wearing their facemasks after 17 May, with figures suggesting transmission is greatest among teenagers and people in their 20s.

Schools and colleges in the Greater Manchester town will be told they can direct children to continue wearing masks, although public health officials say the decision will rest with school heads rather than being an instruction.

Dr Helen Lowey, Bolton’s Director of Public Health, said: “We don’t just want to focus one intervention. Test, trace and isolate and the vaccine programme are the most important, but if school and colleges want to continue with face coverings, we will support them and we can explore whether it is something we want to do across Bolton.”

-

Across the UK the weekly average of all coronavirus cases rose for the third day running, with 2284 new cases reported. There were 11 further deaths.

Asked whether local lockdowns could return, Environment Secretary George Eustice told Sky News: “We can’t rule anything out but our plan that has been set out by the Prime Minister and the reason we are being incredibly cautious about exiting lockdown is because we want this to be the last.

DJ Numbers going up 1723 last week, week before that 520, the week before that 202 should be alarming...Given a high percentage of the UK population should have immunity via vaccination or natural immunity-often after UK variant infection...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Trying to follow variants at [url]https://www.avianflutalk.com/india-variant-statistics_topic43913.html[/url] or https://www.avianflutalk.com/india-variant-statistics_topic43913.html (by updating-mostly on the India variant(s)-but also keeping an eye on other variants)

On the P3 variant;

Total200
Cases by country (as of May 18, 2021)
CountryCasesRef.
Philippines158[9][10][11]
Malaysia8[12]
Germany7[13]
Netherlands6[13]
United Kingdom6[13]
Japan3[13]
United States3[13]
Australia2[13]
New Zealand2[13]
Norway2[13]
Hong Kong1[13]
Singapore1[13]
South Korea1[13]

DJ-Cases are going up in most of Asia. But the more variants in an area-the more likely it is those variants will create new variants. Also variant spread in hosts that have had vaccination(s) can influence the sort of mutations that "survive" (vaccine selection...).(These statistics I manage to copy...but it is very likely to go up as well...) This P3 was first detected in the Phillippines february 18-now 13 countries-200 cases, US, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand-again very serious underreporting due to lack of testing/sequencing.

DJ-Again I am NOT an expert-but ;

may 19 is 68 countries with 8,279 cases

may 16 is 62 countries with 5,981 cases

may 11 is 55 countries with 4,703 cases

may 10 is 49 countries with 3.728 cases,

may 8 is 47 countries with 3.319/3.325 cases

may 3 is 28 countries with 1.815 cases

for the India variant is alarming-as I put in scenario's;

DJ-Global doubling per week would see around 16,000 to 17,000 cases by may 26, above 30,000 cases in over 100 countries early june. Second week of june 60/80,000 cases ? By the end of next mont over 600,000 India variant cases ?

(And I hate to qoute myself...;-) Reopening, less vaccinations/NPI, more travel etc. is perfect if you want to increase wave four-total insane if you want to end the pandemic...

People from more than 200 nations and territories are set to arrive and the Games, due to begin in eight weeks, pose a danger, said Naoto Ueyama, head of the Japan Doctors Union.

"All of the different mutant strains of the virus which exist in different places will be concentrated and gathering here in Tokyo. We cannot deny the possibility of even a new strain of the virus potentially emerging," he told a news conference.

"If such a situation were to arise, it could even mean a Tokyo Olympic strain of the virus being named in this way, which would be a huge tragedy and something which would be the target of criticism, even for 100 years."

DJ Such global events could create a "mega-mix" of variants...however;

Kenji Shibuya, director of the Institute of Population Health at King’s College, London, who has been helping the vaccination campaign in Japan, played down dangers specific to the Games.

"Mutation takes place when virus stays in immuno-compromised or partially immunised people for a long period of time," Shibuya said.

DJ Do we realy need to take this risks for "olympic games" ???? (Can't fix stupid-yes I know...)

Absolutely there will be a Olympic variant.....

Seems too me that the only people driving this are the Olympic Game committee....

Obviously they stand to lose millions ......

"Olympic variant..... "

I was going to suggest that rather than "Tokyo variant" as a reminder that it is the Games that will cause the melting pot for any new variant-

HANOI (REUTERS, XINHUA) - Vietnam health minister Nguyen Thanh Long said on Saturday (May 29) the country has detected a new variant of the coronavirus, which is a mix of the Covid-19 variants first identified in India and Britain and spreads quickly by air, online newspaper VnExpress reported.

According to Mr Nguyen, the hybrid strain could spread very fast in the air, and the Vietnamese health ministry will announce this new strain on the world gene map.

The two mutated strains first identified in Britain and India are currently the most common variants among the new Covid-19 cases in Vietnam in the ongoing infection wave.

After successfully containing the coronavirus for most of last year, Vietnam is now battling an outbreak that is spreading more quickly.

Nearly 3,600 people have been infected in 31 of its 63 cities and provinces since late April, accounting for more than half of the country’s total infections.

“After running gene sequencing on newly detected patients, we have discovered a new variant that is a mix of India and UK ones,” Mr Nguyen was quoted as saying.

-Nepal variant ?

[url]https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-57346888[/url] or https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-57346888 ;

The transport secretary said two factors had led to the decision to downgrade Portugal, along with the islands of Madeira and the Azores.

"One is the positivity rate has nearly doubled since the last review in Portugal," he said.

"And the other is there's a sort of Nepal mutation of the so-called Indian variant [now known as Delta] which has been detected and we just don't know the potential for that to be a vaccine-defeating mutation."

On the so-called "Nepal mutation", Public Health England told the BBC it was "aware of reports linking Nepal to Delta (VOC-21APR-02) with the additional mutation K417N".

"This variant is present in multiple countries including a small number of cases in the UK, detected through rapid testing and whole genome sequencing," PHE said. "We are investigating K417N to better understand its significance."

On 2 June, Portugal had 5.4 new cases per 100,000 people per day, which was only a little higher than the UK at 5.1 - but differences in the amount of testing being done make direct comparisons difficult.

These are the Indian variants (Delta) and South African "(Beta) .

" We are in the third (wave) at the moment, " said a member of the Covid-19 Committee, Professor Jean-Marie Kayembe, quoted Wednesday evening by UN radio Okapi.

On Kinshasa [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinshasa[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinshasa

Kinshasa (/kɪnˈʃɑːsə/; French: [kinʃasa]; Lingala: Kinsásá), formerly Léopoldville (Dutch: Leopoldstad), is the capital and the largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. With a total population of 15 million as of 2021, it is the second highest city population in Africa.

Kinshasa is now one of the world's fastest growing megacities. It faces Brazzaville, the capital of the neighbouring Republic of the Congo; the two cities are the world's second-closest pair of capital cities (after Vatican City and Rome). The city of Kinshasa is also one of the DRC's 26 provinces. Because the administrative boundaries of the city-province cover a vast area, over 90 percent of the city-province's land is rural in nature, and the urban area occupies a small but expanding section on the western side.[6]

Kinshasa is Africa's third-largest metropolitan area after Cairo and Lagos.[3] It is also the world's largest Francophone urban area, with French being the language of government, education, media, public services and high-end commerce in the city, while Lingala is used as a lingua franca in the street.[7] Kinshasa hosted the 14th Francophonie Summit in October 2012.[8]

Residents of Kinshasa are known as Kinois (in French and sometimes in English) or Kinshasans (English). The indigenous people of the area include the Humbu [fr] and Teke.

Brazzaville (French pronunciation: [bʁazavil]KongoKintamo, Nkuna, Kintambo, Mavula, TandalaTekeMfwaMfuaMfoaM'fa[3][4][5][6]) is the capital and largest city of the Republic of the Congo (Congo Republic). Constituting the financial and administrative centre of the country, it is located on the north side of the Congo River, opposite Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo).

The population of the capital is estimated to exceed 1.8 million residents, comprising more than a third of the national populace. Some 40% are employed in non-agricultural professions. During World War II, Brazzaville was also the capital of Free France between 1940 and 1942.

In 2013, Brazzaville was designated a City of Music by UNESCO; since then it has also been a member of the Creative Cities Network.[7]

DJ-So an urban area of almost 17 million in population is seeing a mix of variants...For several days, cases of contamination, relatively limited in absolute terms, have been rising sharply, according to official figures. 243 new cases were thus identified Thursday, including 161 in Kinshasa, where the contaminations revolved around a few dozen at most in recent weeks.

Downtown as an epicenter

As of June 2, these figures show 32,176 confirmed cases, for 789 deaths. With more than 22,348 cases, Kinshasa is the main focus of the epidemic that appeared in March 2020 in the country, with the town of Gombe as its epicenter, the rich city center where institutions, the business world are concentrated, and where live well-off Congolese and foreigners.

The majority of the inhabitants of the capital, however, remain skeptical about the presence, or even the existence, of the coronavirus in this sprawling megalopolis, for the moment relatively spared.

Several close associates of President Félix Tshisekedi died of the disease, as well as around thirty parliamentarians.

-Haïti variant-also on its way ; [url]https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/north-america-ab/north-america-covid-19-sept-13-2020-may-31-2021/916650-covid-19-the-epidemic-continues-to-worsen-in-haiti[/url] or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/north-america-ab/north-america-covid-19-sept-13-2020-may-31-2021/916650-covid-19-the-epidemic-continues-to-worsen-in-haiti ;On May 24, following the detection of the Alpha and Gamma variants in the country (respectively identified for the first time in the United Kingdom in December 2020 and in Brazil in January 2021), the health authorities established a first state of emergency. eight-day health: curfew between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., reduction of staff in public and private institutions, compliance with the physical distancing measure (1.50 m), compulsory wearing of a mask in public places and closure classes, with the exception of those preparing for official exams.

DJ So a mix of UK and P1 variant happening in the poorest country of the America's (also French speaking by the way...)

So far fungul infections only reported in India, Russia, Uruguay and Paraguay...must be widespread however...

After may 28 news on the Vietnam variant Peru is showing yet another-major-variant; [url]https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/local-regional-communities-and-organizations/cidrap/917509-cidrap-global-covid-cases-continue-decline-though-many-countries-still-struggle[/url] or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/local-regional-communities-and-organizations/cidrap/917509-cidrap-global-covid-cases-continue-decline-though-many-countries-still-struggle ;

In other developments, the WHO said it is tracking one more variant of concern, first seen in Peru and called Lambda, which has genetic markers suggesting that it is more transmissible.

-

WHO adds Lambda as variant of interest

Also in its update, the WHO said it added a new variant of interest, called C.37 and labeled Lambda, which was first reported by Peru last August. The WHO said it has been tracking the variant on an alert basis.
Lambda has now been linked to substantive transmission in multiple countries—29 across 5 WHO regions. However, it is most prevalent in South America, with officials in Peru reporting that 81% of cases sequenced since April are linked to the Lambda variant.
The WHO said Lambda has genetic markers suggesting it may be more transmissible and possibly more resistant to neutralizing antibodies, though more studies are needed to gauge the impact of countermeasures as well as vaccine effectiveness.

DJ-So what is the news-first detected in Peru august 2020-out of control this april...

[url]http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2021-06/16/c_1310011501.htm[/url] or http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2021-06/16/c_1310011501.htm

GENEVA, June 16 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday that a new variant of COVID-19, named Lambda, was identified in 29 countries and notably in South America where it is believed to have originated.

First identified in Peru, the Lambda lineage was classified as a global Variant of Interest on Monday due to an "elevated prevalence" in South America, the WHO said in its weekly update.

Lambda has been rampant in Peru where 81 percent of COVID-19 cases since April 2021 were associated with this variant, authorities reported.

In Chile, it was detected in 32 percent of all submitted sequences in the last 60 days, and only outclassed by the Gamma variant which was first identified in Brazil. Other countries such as Argentina and Ecuador have also reported elevated prevalence of the new variant.

The WHO reported that the Lambda lineage carries mutations that might increase transmissibility or strengthen the virus's resistance to antibodies.

However, evidence is too limited for the moment, the Geneva-based organization said, and more studies are required to understand better the Lambda variant.

Variants of Interest, unlike Variants of Concern that have made headlines in newspapers worldwide, are monitored by health organizations but are not proved yet to be significant threats to public health.

The most recent example is the Delta variant. It was first identified in India and was labeled as a Variant of Interest until May 11, 2021, when its rapid spread around the world prompted the WHO to classify it as a Variant of Concern.

DJ-more resistent and more infectious...spread at least in 29 countries...proberbly far more-but not known so not detected....Not yet in [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Other_variants_of_interest[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Other_variants_of_interest Timing would link it most likely with Brazil/Argentina-African variants-maybe early UK/US variants...but it may have gone its own direction...

[url]https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/peru/[/url] or https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/peru/ ;

DJ Peru did show already four waves both in cases and deaths. May 2020-August 2020-February 2021-April 2021 number of deaths per million is over 5,000=0,5% of population+

The central government on Tuesday confirmed that it has detected a mutation in the delta variant of SARS CoV2 virus which has emerged into an additional strain named as Delta Plus.

Confirming that the Delta variant played a crucial role in the second wave of the covid-19 pandemic, the government said that it has submitted the information to the global data system.

“It has been seen in Europe since March and was brought into the public domain two days ago on June 13. Delta variant played a major role in the pandemic. Delta Plus is a variant of interest, but not a variant of concern," said Dr Vinod Paul Member (Health) in NITI Aayog and Chair of the National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for covid-19 (NEGVAC) at a press briefing.

DJ-While the Delta-variant is making the headlines-and could be restarting "chapter two" of this pandemic -[url]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Udix34rrSio[/url] or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Udix34rrSio Dr. John Campbell-there are other variants...

[url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SARS-CoV-2_Lambda_variant[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SARS-CoV-2_Lambda_variant ; By June 2021, the Lambda variant had begun to spread through South America and was detected in twenty-nine countries in total, especially in ArgentinaChile and Ecuador.[2][3] The WHO designated the Lambda variant as a "variant of interest" on 14 June 2021.[1] In mid-June 2021, 90.6% of new COVID-19 cases in Arequipa and 78.1% of new cases in Cusco were the Lambda variant according to the Peruvian Ministry of Health.

DJ-The simple fact that Lambda is spreading in South America while worldwide the Delta variant is getting dominance should be alarming....[url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SARS-CoV-2_Delta_variant#Statistics[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SARS-CoV-2_Delta_variant#Statistics the Delta variant has been detected-with limited testing and hardly any sequencing-in Latin America...most cases in Mexico..a few in Argentina-maybe 10 in Brazil...The fact that the-already very infectious Delta variant is NOT spreading in Latin America may give an indication that the Labda variant may be even more infectious....

[url]https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/south-america-aa/south-america-covid-19-sept-13-2020-may-31-2021/918257-peru-callao-reports-1-416-cases-of-lambda-covid-19-variant-c37[/url] or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/south-america-aa/south-america-covid-19-sept-13-2020-may-31-2021/918257-peru-callao-reports-1-416-cases-of-lambda-covid-19-variant-c37 ; To date, the National Health Institute (INS) has performed genomic sequencing on 2,010 samples from patients diagnosed with COVID-19, which were collected through RT-PCR testing from January to June this year and analyzed in the genomic surveillance platform set up at the biomedicine laboratory, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported on Sunday.

The tests come from 24 regions across Peru, including the Constitutional Province of Callao, where the predominance of the Lambda variant (C37) has been observed in 1,416 (70.9%) of the tested cases.

DJ-Peru in weekly trends cases going down -34%, deaths -27%/South America cases -2%/deaths -12%...

[url]https://www.news-medical.net/news/20210627/Lambda-lineage-of-SARS-CoV-2-has-potential-to-become-variant-of-concern.aspx[/url] or https://www.news-medical.net/news/20210627/Lambda-lineage-of-SARS-CoV-2-has-potential-to-become-variant-of-concern.aspx

The C.37 variant, which lies within the B.1.1.1 lineage, has already been reported as highly prevalent in Peru and has also been identified in many countries across the Americas, Europe and Oceania, says Priscila Wink from the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre in Rio Grande do Sul and colleagues.

However, C.37 has only been reported occasionally in Brazil despite its global spread, adds the team.

Now, Wink and colleagues have described the first case of C.37 infection in Southern Brazil. The researchers discovered eight defining mutations in the variant, in addition to the 19 mutations that have already been described for other members of this lineage.

“Considering that this VOI has been associated with high rates of transmissibility, the possible spread in the Southern Brazilian community is a matter of concern,” they write.

-

Sequencing of the resulting genomic libraries revealed that the C.37 variant is defined by a deletion (Δ3675- 3677) in open reading frame 1a (ORF1a) of SARS-CoV-2. The ORF1a gene codes for a protein that undergoes proteolytic cleavage before it goes on to make nonstructural viral proteins.

The deletion has also been identified in the Alpha (B.1.1.7) variant that emerged in the UK, the Beta (B.1.351) variant that emerged in South African, and the Gamma (P.1) variant that emerged in Brazil.

The Lambda variant also contained a novel deletion (Δ246-252) and multiple nonsynonymous mutations (G75V, T76I, L452Q, F490S, D614G, and T859N) in the gene that encodes the viral spike protein. The spike is the main surface structure the virus uses to bind to and infect host cells.

The mutations L452Q and F490S are present in the spike receptor-binding domain (RBD), which mediates the initial stage of infection by binding to the host cell receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2).

The F490S mutation has previously been associated with reduced susceptibility to antibody neutralization, says Wink and colleagues.

The researchers say that in addition to these eight C.37-defining mutations, 19 mutations were also present that have already been described in other members of the lineage.

The team expects that C.37 will become a variant of concern

The team says the high prevalence of this new VOI has already been described in Chile, Peru, Ecuador, and Argentina, where it is associated with substantial rates of community transmission.

“It is believed that the critical health care system situation and the recent report of increased deaths in these countries is associated with the rising prevalence of the Lambda variant,” writes Wink and colleagues.

The researchers say that it is not yet known whether this variant is more transmissible or more pathogenic than other variants or whether it is able to escape vaccine-induced immunity.

“The novel S: Δ246-252 deletion and additional mutations in the spike protein should be taken into account to understand their effects on viral fitness and host interaction,” they say.

“Considering that this VOI has rapidly spread in Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and Argentina, we believe that it has considerable potential to become a variant of concern,” concludes the team.

DJ-So what to think of this Lambda variant ? [url]https://www.gisaid.org/hcov19-variants/[/url] or https://www.gisaid.org/hcov19-variants/ has 729 Lambda variants in Chile, 539 in the US, (only) 222 in Peru, 87 in Germany, 86 in Argentina, 70 in Mexico, 48 in Spain, 19 in Israel, 13 in France, 8 in Egypt, 7 in the UK, 4 in Brazil, 2 in Aruba, 1 case has been detected in Australia, Turkey, Zimbabwe, NL, Denmark, Curacou, Czech Republic, so basicly it has been already detected all over the globe...

Some scenario's; A-Most likely-Delta variant will be stronger and push aside the Lambda variant...B-Delta & Lambda mix...creating another-very likely worse-variant...Since it managed to get that widespread-also in "opening up countries" and with increased travel it may mix...C-Lambda variant could "balance Delta variant" in some regions-In EurAsia/Africa Delta variant becomes dominant-Lambda pushes the Delta variant out of Mexico,US and Canada...D-Lambda variant turning out to be "worse then Delta" starting wave 5...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Comparing mutations between [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SARS-CoV-2_Delta_variant#Mutations[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SARS-CoV-2_Delta_variant#Mutations and the Lambda variant;

The Delta/ B.1.617.2 genome has 13 mutations (15 or 17 according to some sources,[which?] depending on whether more common mutations are included) which produce alterations in the amino-acid sequences of the proteins it encodes.[3] Four of them, all of which are in the virus's spike protein code, are of particular concern:

  • D614G. The substitution at position 614, an aspartic acid-to-glycine substitution, is shared with other highly transmissible variants like AlphaBeta and Gamma.[19]
  • T478K.[19][20] The exchange at position 478 is a threonine-to-lysine substitution.[21]
  • L452R. The substitution at position 452, a leucine-to-arginine substitution, confers stronger affinity of the spike protein for the ACE2 receptor and decreased recognition capability of the immune system.[7][22] These mutations, when taken individually, are not unique to the variant; rather, their simultaneous occurrence is.[7][23]
  • P681R. The substitution at position 681, a proline-to-arginine substitution, which, according to William A. Haseltine, may boost cell-level infectivity of the variant "by facilitating cleavage of the S precursor protein to the active S1/S2 configuration".[24]

The E484Q mutation is not present in the B.1.617.2 genome.[24][25]

"Delta plus" variant

Delta with K417N corresponds to lineages AY.1 and AY.2[26] and has been nicknamed "Delta plus" or "Nepal variant". It has the K417N mutation[27] which is also present in the Beta variant.[28] The exchange at position 417 is a lysine-to-asparagine substitution

DJ-So main mutations in Delta are L452R, T478K, D614G and P681R (and no E484Q mutation...) Delta+ also has K417N.

On basis of [url]https://www.news-medical.net/news/20210627/Lambda-lineage-of-SARS-CoV-2-has-potential-to-become-variant-of-concern.aspx[/url] or https://www.news-medical.net/news/20210627/Lambda-lineage-of-SARS-CoV-2-has-potential-to-become-variant-of-concern.aspx ; deletion Delta/D 3675-3677, seen in other variants Alfa, Beta Gamma/P1... but also deletion of Delta/D 246-252.

DJ Both Delta and Lambda variant have the D614G mutation, The Delta has L452R while Lambda has L452Q mutation.

Allthough I am not an expert there are lots of different mutations in these variants that may combine in a mix...

It may be wise to keep an eye on this Lambda variant...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Carbon, I'm amazed at how fast this variant is spreading in Australia. I guess with a country of previously no cases, this is clearly illustrating just how easily it's spread. i heard yesterday of 2 women who had the same variant, one catching it from the other and they had never met. When the researchers traced their movements they caught them both on CCTV cameras at a shopping centre and all they did was to walk past each other. They didn't talk or even acknowledge each other, they just walked past and this was enough for one to give it to the other. Scary.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

I'm not amazed by the spread,it was going to get out ,has and will again,

I'm thinking some of this is political.....

All state leaders want a commonwealth quarantine facility.....

Closing down for days costs much more than a purpose  built facility....

I am amazed how poorly we have done rolling out vaccine,

I'm amazed how little vaccine take up with health workers ,and taxi drivers........

People still coming and going overseas unvaccinated, multiple times....madness......

I'm still waiting for test results......

Take care all 😷😉

[url]https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/the-pandemic-discussion-forum/918857-the-lambda-c-37-covid-19-variant-what-do-we-know-about-it[/url] or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/the-pandemic-discussion-forum/918857-the-lambda-c-37-covid-19-variant-what-do-we-know-about-it may be increasing...allthough in South America cases -13%/deaths -9% so it should show up elsewhere...and why are numbers in South America decreasing ? (Ivermectin use ? Vaccines ?)

[url]https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2107799[/url] or https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2107799 ; A second wave of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections in India is leading to the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants. The B.1.617.1 (or kappa) and B.1.617.2 (or delta) variants were first identified in India and have rapidly spread to several countries throughout the world. These variants contain mutations within the spike protein located in antigenic sites recognized by antibodies with potent neutralizing activity.1-3 We used serum samples obtained from infected and vaccinated persons to assess neutralizing activity against the SARS-CoV-2 variants in a live-virus assay.

-

Our results show that the B.1.617.1 variant was 6.8 times less susceptible, and the B.1.617.2 variant was 2.9 times less susceptible, to neutralization by serum from persons who had recovered from Covid-19 and from vaccinated persons than was the WA1/2020 variant. Despite this finding, a majority of the convalescent serum samples (79% [19 of 24 samples] against B.1.617.1 and 96% [23 of 24 samples] against B.1.617.2) and all serum samples from vaccinated persons still had detectable neutralizing activity above the threshold of detection against both variants through 3 months after infection or after the second dose of vaccine. Thus, protective immunity conferred by the mRNA vaccines is most likely retained against the B.1.617.1 and B.1.617.2 variants.

DJ-Variants interact with their hosts...may develop further towards vaccine escape. Certainly UK insane plans to "let variants do their thing per july 19" will worsen the global pandemic outlook. UK is seeing all ready strong increases in cases, hospital cases and deaths-even before "reopening". Since there is no clear definition on "long covid" "politics/experts" can ignore those "numbers"; forget those numbers are real people who may have chronic illness for the rest of their lives so "we can party and go for a sun-vacation"...

Seven residents of a nursing home in Belgium have died after being infected with the Colombian variant of the coronavirus, despite being fully vaccinated, the virology team that conducted tests said on Friday.

The variant of COVID-19 that originated in Colombia, or B.1.621, has been detected in recent weeks in the United States but cases in Europe have been rare.

The seven people who died at the nursing home in the Belgian town of Zaventem, near Brussels, were all in their 80s or 90s, and some of them were already in a poor physical condition, said Marc Van Ranst, a virologist at the University of Leuven which conducted tests on the strain found at the nursing home.

"It is worrisome," Van Ranst said, commenting on the fact that the residents died despite being fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

So far, scientists do not know if the Colombian variant is more transmissible than other variants, he said.

In Belgium, the variant currently accounts for less than 1% of known cases of COVID-19, he said, compared to 2% of cases in the United States and more than that in Florida.

At the nursing home in Zaventem, 21 residents were infected with the variant along with several members of staff, Van Ranst told Reuters. The infected staff experienced only mild symptoms.

Van Ranst said the dominant coronavirus variant in Belgium with around 95% of infections is the Delta, first discovered in India, followed by the Alpha that was previously dominant in Britain.

Additional tests will be run on Friday to rule out any possibility that the nursing home residents died from a different variant of the virus or a different respiratory disease, Van Ranst said.

"It is unlikely but not impossible," he said.

Additional variants[edit]

  • Lineage B.1.618 was first isolated in October 2020. It has the E484K mutation in common with several other variants, and showed significant spread in April 2021 in West Bengal, India.[178][179] As of 23 April 2021, the PANGOLIN database showed 135 sequences detected in India, with single-figure numbers in each of eight other countries worldwide.[180]
  • Lineage B.1.1.318 was designated by PHE as a VUI (VUI-21FEB-04,[17] previously VUI-202102/04) on 24 February 2021. 16 cases of it have been detected in the UK.[17][181] 155 cases were detected in the province of Ontario, Canada between May 30 and June 26, 2021.[182]
  • Lineage B.1.1.317, while not considered a variant of concern, is noteworthy in that Queensland Health forced 2 people undertaking hotel quarantine in BrisbaneAustralia to undergo an additional 5 days' quarantine on top of the mandatory 14 days after it was confirmed they were infected with this variant.[183]
  • B.1.621 a new coronavirus variant which was first discovered in Colombia is also under investigation.[184] This lineage contains a mutation called E484K. It is also listed as variant of interest.

Since testing may be problematic-sequencing may be getting as good as impossible as well...So by now there will be dozens of variants-most regional-but some of them may develop into the next waves...

After perusing this thread I'm now glad I followed my instincts and refrained from buying tickets for a holiday visit to my sister in SC.  I'll re-visit the possibility of travel sometime in October, I think.  Sorry I'm not more into the site, or reading the deeper details, but I've got brain fog from dealing with vertigo these last 5 or six weeks.

DJ A good overview of spreading new variants at [url]https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9937851/New-Covid-variant-detected-South-Africa-mutated-variant-far.html[/url] or https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9937851/New-Covid-variant-detected-South-Africa-mutated-variant-far.html (good find-bad news KiwiMum) from the article;

In their study scientists found the strain, which descends from the C.1 strain that was first spotted amid the first wave of the pandemic, has a mutation rate of about 41.8 mutations per year.

This rate is nearly double the current global mutation rate seen in any other Variant of Concern (VOC) so far.

While more research is required 'to determine the functional impact of these mutations', scientists warned the latest variant, which has 'mutated substantially', could help the virus evade antibodies and immune responses.

Earlier this month, a report published by Public Health England said that the C.1.2 strain was among ten variants being monitored by scientists in the UK.

In April, scientists found another South African strain — called B.1.351 — had the potential to 'break through' the Pfizer jab.

Scientists examined 400 people who had tested positive for coronavirus at least 14 days after receiving one or two doses of the jab - and 400 who tested positive with no vaccine.

The variant was eight times more prevalent in those who had two jabs than none. It was seen in 5.4 per cent of people with two doses - but 0.7 per cent of people without any.

DJ If a variant starts spreading more in vaccinated then unvaccinated it suggest vaccines reactions somehow helping getting infected. [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibody-dependent_enhancement[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibody-dependent_enhancement

Further from the article;

The B.1.351 has key mutations on its spike protein which scientists fear might make it difficult for the immune system to recognise.

These alterations open the door to it being resistant to vaccines, which train the body to spot the spike protein, or natural immunity from previous infection.

Last month health chiefs spotted another Covid variant spreading in Britain, with 31 mutant strains now on the UK's watchlist.

Sixteen cases of the B.1.621 version of the virus – which is thought to have originated in Colombia – were detected by experts.

Public Health England insisted there was no proof it is deadlier than Delta, which makes up 99 per cent of all cases in the UK.

DJ The C.1.2 strain is not yet included in [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Additional_variants[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variants_of_SARS-CoV-2#Additional_variants

[url]https://twitter.com/DrEricDing[/url] or https://twitter.com/DrEricDing ; This #C12 is obviously a very fast moving variant. We don’t know exact transmission yet or severity or vaccine efficacy yet. But the best advice that will serve us well is to take the PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE as the approach—“move fast”!!!

DJ "move fast" and "precaution" have not been shown so far during this pandemic both by "leaders" and "embedded experts"...

/nNEW VARIANT—a new #SARSCoV2 variant C.1.2 just identified in South Africa & several countries, with concerns it could be more infectious and evade vaccines. #C12 also has mutation rate that is nearly **twice as fast** as the rate of the other variants.Collectie https://jpost.com/health-scienceew-covid-variant-detected-in-south-africa-most-mutated-variant-so-far-678011

DJ Open air mass gatherings "supposed to be safe" insanity...

So two "new" variants C.1.2 and a Delta-UK variant may be increasing...sort of "variants inside variants"....(and NOT milder variants-more likely the R0 has to be higher then the Delta R0 between 5 and 8 to be able to spread...If it would give milder disease it would not get discovered. There may be a few "strains" giving milder disease but so far they seem unable to outcompete other-worse-variants...).

[url]https://www.jpost.com/health-science/new-covid-variant-detected-in-south-africa-most-mutated-variant-so-far-678011[/url] or https://www.jpost.com/health-science/new-covid-variant-detected-in-south-africa-most-mutated-variant-so-far-678011 ;

Scientists first detected C.1.2 in May 2021, finding that it was descended from C.1, which scientists found surprising as C.1 had last been detected in January. The new variant has "mutated substantially" compared to C.1 and is more mutations away from the original virus detected in Wuhan than any other Variant of Concern (VOC) or Variant of Interest (VOI) detected so far worldwide.

While first detected in South Africa, C.1.2 has since been found in England, China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland.
The scientists believe that the number of available sequences of C.1.2 may be an underrepresentation of the spread and frequency of the variant in South Africa and around the world. The study found consistent increases in the number of C.1.2 genomes in South Africa on a monthly basis, rising from 0.2% of genomes sequenced in May to 1.6% in June and then to 2% in July, similar to the increases seen with the Beta and Delta variants there.

The study also found that the C.1.2 lineage has a mutation rate of about 41.8 mutations per year, which is nearly twice as fast as the current global mutation rate of the other variants. The scientists stated that this short period of increased evolution was also seen with the Alpha, Beta and Gamma variants, suggesting that a single event, followed by a spike in cases, drove faster mutation rates.

More than half of the C.1.2 sequences have 14 mutations, but additional mutations have been noticed in some of the sequences, suggesting that evolution within the lineage is ongoing, according to the study.

More than half (about 52%) of the mutations in the spike region of the C.1.2 sequences have previously been seen in other VOCs and VOIs. The mutations N440K and Y449H, which have been associated with escape from certain antibodies, have also been noticed in C.1.2 sequences. The scientists stressed that the combination of these mutations, as well as changes in other parts of the virus, likely help the virus evade antibodies and immune responses, including in patients who have already been infected with the Alpha or Beta variants.

The study comes as a doctor in Turkey reported indications that a new coronavirus variant had been detected in the country, with tests detecting mutations that weren't found in the current variants named by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Dr. Lütfi Çamlı told Turkish media that while tests were conducted to detect the presence of variants around Turkey, doctors found a new variant with no connection to the other variants, reaching a rate of about 50%-60% of cases in the northern province of Rize. Çamlı stressed, however, that it is still unclear whether they have actually found a new variant or if it was just the result of false negativity in PCR tests.

The doctor additionally stressed that it is normal for new mutations to emerge in an epidemic and that the mutations recently found in Turkey may not have any serious effect on how the virus functions.

DJ It looks like South Africa did get their variant off the radar early this year...may have decreased to very limited numbers-had some mutations-and started spreading again ! It underlines the urgent need for more testing and sequencing-around the globe !

The Turkish find may hint at a problem-but also may not show itself-yet-to develop into a problem...There are lots of mutations resulting in all kind of variants that end without becoming a problem....

(Again) Direct link to study [url]https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.08.20.21262342v1.full[/url] or https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.08.20.21262342v1.full ; Here we report the identification of a potential variant of interest assigned to the PANGO lineage C.1.2. This lineage was first identified in May 2021 and evolved from C.1, one of the lineages that dominated the first wave of SARS-CoV-2 infections in South Africa and was last detected in January 2021.

C.1.2 has since been detected across the majority of the provinces in South Africa and in seven other countries spanning Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania.

The emergence of C.1.2 was associated with an increased substitution rate, as was previously observed with the emergence of the Alpha, Beta and Gamma variants of concern (VOCs).

C.1.2 contains multiple substitutions (R190S, D215G, N484K, N501Y, H655Y and T859N) and deletions (Y144del, L242-A243del) within the spike protein, which have been observed in other VOCs and are associated with increased transmissibility and reduced neutralization sensitivity.

Of greater concern is the accumulation of additional mutations (C136F, Y449H and N679K) which are also likely to impact neutralization sensitivity or furin cleavage and therefore replicative fitness.

While the phenotypic characteristics and epidemiology of C.1.2 are being defined, it is important to highlight this lineage given its concerning constellations of mutations.

DJ Deletions may result (I think) in a lighter virus that spreads more airborne...over further distances-so may reach more hosts !

[url]https://www.timesofisrael.com/positive-covid-test-rate-hits-7-8-the-highest-since-february/[/url] or https://www.timesofisrael.com/positive-covid-test-rate-hits-7-8-the-highest-since-february/

The rate of coronavirus tests returning positive is still climbing, Health Ministry figures released Monday showed, even as Israel feverishly rolls out booster shots to curb the virus.

Of the 91,051 tests conducted Sunday, 7.81 percent returned positive, according to ministry numbers, the highest rate since mid-February.

-

He also commented on the Health Ministry’s announcement on Sunday that all Israelis over the age of 12 are now eligible for a third vaccine shot that is being pushed as a necessary booster for inoculation. The government has made vaccination a key strategy in its efforts to curb the current wave of COVID-19 infections.

Despite Ash’s optimism, an unnamed senior official at the Health Ministry told Kan that every day another 100 COVID-19 patients become seriously ill. The source said that includes those who are already hospitalized but deteriorate, along with patients in geriatric institutions, many of whom are not included in the Health Ministry daily statistics.

The official urged against starting the school year as planned, saying that alongside the expected private and public gatherings during the holiday period that includes the Jewish new year of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and the Sukkoth festivals, such a move was likely to bring disaster to the health system. He urged further restrictions on gatherings rather than just relying on vaccinations.

“We understood that two vaccination doses can’t be relied upon for people to feel protected,” he said. “Those with two shots are less protected over time and after half a year [the decline] becomes significant.”

DJ There may be soom indications for [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibody-dependent_enhancement[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibody-dependent_enhancement  also the UK is reporting some mutations in Delta causing increase of spread...Again limited testing/sequencing may be part of the problem. But also "new variants" seem to show up in the SA and India variants...So sequencing may have to look at a lot more changes...it may be getting more complicated !

ADE (antibody dependent enhancement) is something that worries me. It's certainly proved to be a problem in the past with RNA vaccine development. Of course we won't know if it's a problem with Covid until some time passes but it's definitely something that we need to keep an eye open for.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

On ADE [url]https://www.nature.com/articles/s41564-020-00789-5[/url] or https://www.nature.com/articles/s41564-020-00789-5 ;ADE caused by enhanced viral replication has been observed for other viruses that infect macrophages, including dengue virus13,14 and feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV)15. Furthermore, ADE and ERD has been reported for SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV both in vitro and in vivo. The extent to which ADE contributes to COVID-19 immunopathology is being actively investigated.

DJ you do not need vaccines to see ADE (but you do need some immune response...).

On new Beta-SA /(Delta, Gamma links ?) [url]https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/internet-communication/avian-flu-diary/922727-preprint-the-continuous-evolution-of-sars-cov-2-in-south-africa-lineage-c-1-2[/url] or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/internet-communication/avian-flu-diary/922727-preprint-the-continuous-evolution-of-sars-cov-2-in-south-africa-lineage-c-1-2

With 99% of the COVID cases in the United States estimated to be from Delta, it is difficult to envision that variant being displaced anytime soon by something else, yet that possibility exists. So researcher are on the lookout for potential contenders; variants that may have the ability to compete head-to-head with Delta.

Last month's rising star was thought to be Lambda (see PrePrint: Infectivity and Immune Escape of the New SARS-CoV-2 Variant of Interest Lambda), with pockets of Beta, Gamma, and Epsilon all still in the running.

Unless and until Delta relinquishes its stranglehold, however, identifying a likely successor is nearly impossible.

There are too many variables and interactions we don't fully understand, and always the possibility that a `new' and more `biologically fit' variant will emerge and join the fray.

-

Alarming headlines aside, the actual number of C.1.2 variants discovered to date is small (n < 100), and its geographic spread is limited. That said, C.1.2 is most closely related to the Lambda variant - which has gained its own notoriety - and it seems to be evolving at a much faster clip than other variants.

Both of which make this a variant worth exploring. But whether that means C.1.2 will become the next `big challenge' in COVID, is far from clear.

C.1.2 lineage - which is a highly mutated form of C.1 first reported last January - was first detected in the Mpumalanga and Gauteng provinces of South Africa in May. It has since been detected across much of South Africa, as well as sporadic cases in England, China, and parts of Europe and Oceania.

-

The authors suggest hat the rapid accumulation of mutations in C.1.2 may have occurred in a single, immunocompromised, individual who could have carried the virus for a prolonged period of time. This is not the first time we've seen this notion.

Last December, the ECDC Threat Assessment Brief On UK SARS-CoV-2 Variant speculated that the large number of concurrent mutations in the B.1.1.7 variant may have arised from a single chronically-infected, likely immunocompromised, individual.

About the same time, COG-UK released a report on multiple escape mutants generated in a chronically ill, immunocompromised patient, after receiving convalescent plasma therapy.

Three weeks ago the NEJM carried an article warning of the potential risk of new variants emerging from long-term infections among immunocompromised individuals (see SARS-CoV-2 Variants in Patients with Immunosuppression), a concern we've seen raised previously.

Maybe for now the best info available...

[url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SARS-CoV-2_Mu_variant[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SARS-CoV-2_Mu_variant

The Mu variant, also known as lineage B.1.621 or VUI-21JUL-1, is one of the variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. It was first detected in Colombia in January 2021 and was designated by the WHO as a variant of interest on August 30, 2021.[1] The WHO said the variant has mutations that indicate a risk of resistance to vaccines and stressed that further studies were needed to better understand it.[2] Outbreaks of the Mu variant were reported in South America and Europe.[3] The lineage B.1.621 has a sublineage, labeled B.1.621.1 under the PANGO nomenclature, which has already been detected in more than 20 countries worldwide.[4]

Under the simplified naming scheme proposed by the World Health Organization, B.1.621 was labeled "Mu variant", and was considered a variant of interest (VOI), but not yet a variant of concern.

The Mu genome has a total number of 21 mutations, including 9 amino acid mutations, all of which are in the virus's spike protein code: T95I, Y144S, Y145N, R346K, E484K or the escape mutation, N501YD614GP681H, and D109N.[7] Mutations in viruses are not new. All viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, undergo change over time. Most of these changes are inconsequential, but some can alter properties to make these viruses more virulent or escape the treatment or vaccines.[3] One study based in a lab in Rome tested the effectiveness of the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine against the Mu variant, and found that “despite several mutations in Spike, the SARS-CoV-2 Mu variant is neutralised by the Pfizer vaccine-elicited antibodies” with a lower effectiveness than that of other coronavirus variants

According to data from GISAID, the strain has been detected in at least 40 countries and in 49 states across the USA.

“This variant was first reported on Colombia in January and we found it in May in Ecuador. It caught our attention as it has several mutations similar to Beta, and some with Iota, Delta, Alpha and Eta.”

Cárdenas says that within a few weeks the Mu strain had outcompeted the variants most common in Ecuador prior to Mu’s arrival.

“In Colombia it accounts of 39 per cent of sequences identified and it has been found in many other countries of South America including Peru, Uruguay, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay.

“Additionally there have been small outbreaks from this variant in Spain, France and Florida, USA.”

The WHO’s variant of interest designation means the strain has:

  • genetic changes that are predicted or known to affect virus characteristics such as transmissibility, disease severity, immune escape, diagnostic or therapeutic escape
  • been identified to cause significant community transmission or multiple COVID-19 clusters, in multiple countries with increasing relative prevalence alongside increasing number of cases over time
  • may have other apparent epidemiological impacts to suggest an emerging risk to global public health.
  • -
  • However, a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases on 13 August 2021 suggests that the Mu variant has “two cases of a potential vaccine-escape”.

They write that several of the spike mutations within Mu “have been reported to show reduced neutralisation by antibodies”.

The Mu variant was also found to have the same spike mutation that has been associated with a weakened vaccine response in the Beta variant.

“The presence of mutations associated with vaccine escape might warrant reclassification of this variant to a variant of concern.”

  • One pre-print study – which is yet to be peer-reviewed – says that although the Mu strain is not yet classified as a ‘variant of concern’ by WHO (which means it is being more closely monitored than a variant of interest), the mutations found in the B.1.621 strain could have “a synergistic impact on attributes such as reduction of vaccine-induced protection from severe disease, increased transmission and disease severity”.

[url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SARS-CoV-2_Mu_variant#Statistics[/url] or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SARS-CoV-2_Mu_variant#Statistics  US-with very limited testing/sequencing on september 2 reported 2,011 detections of the Mu-variant..indicating the real number must be higher...

Spain 473 cases, Mexico 357, Aruba 84 (small island-so that number is alarming !!!), Italy 77, NL 72 (Aruba is part of the "kingdom of the Netherlands"), UK 55, Puerto Rico 50...
