Russia: US supplying Kyiv with longer-range missiles would cross a 'red line'

Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for Russia’s foreign ministry, said Thursday that if the US decides to supply Kyiv with longer-range missiles, that would cross a “red line” and the US would then become “a party to the conflict”, Reuters is reporting.

Ukraine is already using US-made high mobility artillery rocket systems – just not US-made longer-range missiles.

Maria Zakharova added that Russia “reserves the right to defend its territory”.

  • US-made High-Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems have helped Ukraine turn the tide against Russia.

  • The success of HIMARS is likely to raise demand for the weapon — Taiwan already wants to buy more.

  • Now the US Army is looking for companies that can build up to 100 HIMARS launchers a year.

The US Army is looking for companies that can build up to 100 HIMARS multiple rocket launchers a year.

The Army's formal request for information comes as Ukraine uses its new US-supplied M142 High-Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems to conduct devastating strikes against Russian forces.

What's interesting is that the Army lays out a five-year schedule that calls for almost 500 new HIMARS, which are currently built by Lockheed Martin. From the 2024 to 2028 fiscal years, the Army is contemplating a minimum of 24 new launchers a year and a maximum of 96, totaling 120 to 480 over five years.

"The total quantities for HIMARS include all potential variants," the Army said. "Additional supporting efforts include, but are not limited to: recurring production, obsolescence, engineering changes, system engineering and program management (SEPM), integrated logistics support (ILS), spares, New Equipment Training, and other support equipment."

Whether those new HIMARS are actually built depends on funding, congressional politics, and changes in the international situation and military technology. "The information provided may be used by the Army in developing its acquisition strategy," noted Redstone Arsenal, which issued the request for information.

Adding 480 new launchers would almost double the world's supply of HIMARS.

The US Army has 363 and the Marine Corps another 47. The Army said in 2021 — before Russia attacked Ukraine — that it would seek to increase its force to 547 HIMARS. Romania has 18 HIMARS and US approval to purchase up to 54. Singapore has 18 launchers and Jordan 12.

Next to Ukraine, perhaps the most notable buyer would be Taiwan, which now plans to order 29 HIMARS.

Ukrainian soldiers are refurbishing abandoned Russian tanks and trucks

·6 min read

KYIV, Ukraine — It was an early and delightful symbol of underdog resistance. Dubbed the “John Deere Brigade,” Ukrainian tractors were shown all over social media lugging away hastily abandoned Russian military equipment, from tanks to self-propelled artillery systems to complicated air defense platforms, worth tens of millions of dollars. Western predictions that Ukraine would fall to its invaders in as little as three days proved wildly off base. The breadbasket of Europe could punch above its weight. And now it was in the repo business.

Around the time of the Battle of Kyiv, captured Russian vehicles were generally just given a quick coat of paint and liberally decked out with Ukrainian flags before being sent back out to fight their previous owners. But what was at first an organic and ad hoc tractor effort by Ukrainian farmers has transformed into something far more organized and systematic, as the Ukrainian military have pushed vast quantities of captured Russian armor into frontline service. And since Ukraine retook almost all of Kharkiv district in the last week, there has been a windfall of new vehicles to “MacGyver” and repurpose.

Two long lines of armored vehicles occupy a broad thoroughfare.

In the aftermath of Ukraine’s successful Kharkiv offensive over the past week, fleets of Russian armored vehicles were left abandoned on the battlefield, left behind by Russian troops as they desperately tried to escape the Ukrainian advance. Footage uploaded to social media by victorious Ukrainian troops showed rows of BMP infantry fighting vehicles, neatly parked in the liberated city of Izium, seemingly in near-perfect condition, while T-80U tanks from Russia’s elite Fourth Guards Tank Regiment were left abandoned at a maintenance station, in various states of repair.

According to the independent monitor Oryx, which uses publicly available footage to visually confirm Russian and Ukrainian equipment losses, the Ukrainians have captured a minimum of 1,841 pieces of heavy Russian military equipment since the start of the war, including 356 tanks, 606 armored fighting vehicles, and 363 trucks and jeeps. As Oryx only includes equipment that has been visually confirmed as captured, the true total is probably much higher.

Germany will supply Ukraine with additional armoured vehicles and rocket launch systems but will not provide the battle tanks that Kyiv has long asked for, the German defence minister Christine Lambrecht said on Thursday. She added that Soviet-made BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles would also “very quickly” head to Ukraine from Greece, as a deal with Germany to resupply Athens’ stocks with the more modern Marder armoured vehicles was close.

DEEP HITTER:  The US provided HIMARS changes the complexion of the Ukraine War.  These systems allow Ukraine to strike Russian logistics and troop concentrations before they can reach the line of battle.

#Ukraine: Now we can finally take a look at how American 🇺🇸 AGM-88 HARM anti-radar missiles are mounted on Ukrainian MiG-29 jets - the missile itself is used with its standard LAU-118/A launcher which is attached to a newly fabricated pylon-adapter, intended specially for AGM-88!

Death toll in Luhansk bombing rises

The prosecutor-general of the Russian-backed separatist authority in the Luhansk oblast and his deputy were both killed by a bomb blast at their offices on Friday, Reuters is reporting.

Sergei Gorenko “died from his injuries as a result of an explosion at his office,” a spokesperson for the emergency services said, according to the Russian news agency Interfax. A colonel in the separatist Luhansk interior ministry told the state-run TASS news agency that Gorenko’s deputy had also been killed.

Russian agencies quoted emergency services and local officials as saying the blast had been caused by a bomb.

President Zelenskiy’s senior adviser Mykhailo Podolyak has urged European countries to provide Ukraine with “modern and effective” missile defence systems.

His tweet comes after Vladimir Putin warned that Moscow could ramp up its strikes on the country’s vital infrastructure if Ukrainian forces target facilities in Russia.

Western countries have many modern and effective missile/air defense systems. But missiles do not fly over Paris, Rome or Berlin. They fly over 🇺🇦 cities. Maybe it is time to protect civilians and critical infrastructure? Or will we wait for a large-scale man-made disaster?
