The WHO Director-General concurs with the advice offered by the Committee regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He determines that COVID-19 is now an established and ongoing health issue which no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).

DJ-it would be welcome if it would be correct....

Oh it's over DJ and has been for awhile. Time for Albert to change the pandemic alert level and last one out shut off the lights.

A-I, ;

-First, this "once-a-forum" may be renamed (again) back to "Avian Flu Talk" ?

-Second, A-I I hope you are very right, I do get it very wrong...

https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/huh-what-is-happening-in-new-zealand-2,762-covid-19-attributed-deaths-in-the-last-week-almost-400-dying-a-day-and-still-increasing or https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/huh-what-is-happening-in-new-zealand-2,762-covid-19-attributed-deaths-in-the-last-week-almost-400-dying-a-day-and-still-increasing

and https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2023/05/preprint-characterization-of-sars-cov-2.html or https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2023/05/preprint-characterization-of-sars-cov-2.html ;

While exquisitely adapted to humans, SARS-CoV-2 has also found a plethora of other suitable hosts, including mink, deer, dogs, cats, and even rodents (see Nature: Comparative Susceptibility of SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV, and MERS-CoV Across Mammals).

The concern is that the virus might adapt to another species, follow a divergent evolutionary path, only to `spill back' into humans as a `new', and potentially more dangerous, threat.
And the reality is, we've already seen that happen.

DJ...The WHO -my view- like the IPCC for climate- is a political organization...may end up being in the way of solutions...but again...I am NOT an expert and hope to be very wrong !

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

More than 3 years after COVID's initial declaration as a PHEIC (Public Health Emergency of International Concern), the IHR Emergency Committee this week has recommended downgrading the SARS-CoV-2 virus to an established and ongoing health issue.

Globally, reports of COVID infections, hospitalizations, and deaths have plummeted in recent months, although all three metrics continue to be under-reported (see WHO: Countries Reporting COVID Data Continues To Decline).

Given the nearly unanimous decision by countries around the globe to deescalate their COVID response, the decision by the WHO to follow suit is not terribly surprising.

-

Prior to this COVID emergency, `conventional wisdom' was that a pandemic emergency might last 18 months, nobody seriously considered 3+ years.  But then, a lot of pre-conceived notions were challenged during this unique pandemic.

While COVID has thankfully settled down into a series of lower amplitude waves, SARS-CoV-2  continues to evolve, making the future course and impact of the virus unknowable.

As a practical matter, most nations around the globe had already ended their emergency response prior to today's announcement, so its impact will be limited.

DJ..in fact WHO "ending" pandemic status because member states "want to live with the virus" to "save the economy"....

-Long CoViD is a very major problem

-New cases/deaths are -de facto- STILL on a pandemic level

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/weekly-trends/#weekly_table or https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/weekly-trends/#weekly_table over half a million new cases last 7 days with most testing gone...Over 3,000 deaths reported last week...excess deaths often not back to normal

-Spread outside humans increasing high speed-as far as tested...

My-DJ-conclusion; like with climate collapse, wars, we "do not want to know"....

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

DJ

https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/the-fallacy-of-declining-sars-cov-2-infections-new-variants-after-debut,-evolve-to-cause-asymptomatic-spreads-and-are-better-adapted-for-viral-persist or https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/the-fallacy-of-declining-sars-cov-2-infections-new-variants-after-debut,-evolve-to-cause-asymptomatic-spreads-and-are-better-adapted-for-viral-persist Is the "pandemic pattern" shifting ?

We did see lots of symptomatic cases, both PCR and LF (DIY) testing worked in most cases...do we now see lots of asymptomatic/mild cases...tests less able to pick up the virus ?

Does CoViD develop away from an acute illness into a chronic one...less respitory symptoms...more damage all over the body ? Is CoViD changing from a fast-killer into a slow killer ?

We need much more, better testing...sequencing, follow healthdossiers...Are we willing to see it if cases of diabetes increase ? Hearth problems -also in younger age groups- start showing up ? Long CoViD can be a cause for dementia, CVA (stroke) all kind of organ problems...

Since we may be dealing with millions-if not billions !!!! of human cases...also an increasing number of non-human CoViD cases...should we not put much more effort in getting a better view ?

H5N1 from birds into mammals, CoViD from humans into other mammals go beyond https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_health_emergency_of_international_concern or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_health_emergency_of_international_concern ; public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC /fk/ FAYK) is a formal declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) of "an extraordinary event which is determined to constitute a public health risk to other States through the international spread of disease and to potentially require a coordinated international response", formulated when a situation arises that is "serious, sudden, unusual, or unexpected", which "carries implications for public health beyond the affected state's national border" and "may require immediate international action".[1

DJ...is M-pox, candida, many other diseases increasing not a reason for MORE "international action" ?

If the virus kills the host it may lose its basis...the "virus drive" is to produce as many new virusses via as many new hosts...

Like in climate collapse http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/04/humans-may-be-extinct-in-2026.html or http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/04/humans-may-be-extinct-in-2026.html we seem to close our eyes...

Is Covid really over? WHO’s announcement sounds more like surrender than victory

link https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/may/07/is-covid-really-over-whos-announcement-sounds-more-like-surrender-than-victory or https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/may/07/is-covid-really-over-whos-announcement-sounds-more-like-surrender-than-victory ;

The global public emergency caused by Covid-19 may be officially over but the pandemic will still be with us for many years. Nor is it clear that governments have learned sufficiently from the outbreak to be ready to fight off new emerging microbes that could trigger worse calamities.

These are the stark conclusions of scientists reacting to last week’s news that the World Health Organization (WHO) no longer considers Covid-19 – which has killed more than 7 million people over the past three years – to be a public health emergency of international concern.

Most researchers welcomed the decision because it reflects the fact that the acute phase of the Covid-19 outbreak is now over. At its peak, in January 2021, the global death rate reached more than 100,000 people a week. Last week it had dropped to about 3,500.

However, health officials and scientists also pointed out that immunity to the disease remains short-lived, while there has been considerable slackening in restrictions previously imposed to prevent people from infecting each other. Future waves of infections are therefore inevitable, they warned.

DJ https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/weekly-trends/#weekly_table or https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/weekly-trends/#weekly_table has just under 2,500 CoViD deaths worldwide last week...however excess deaths in many countries above the norm and hardly any testing is left....

The WHO is fooling the public...just like the IPCC is fooling the public on climate...both to "save the economy/profits" short term however destroying public interests longer term...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Abstract

The global spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has resulted in emergence of lineages which impact the effectiveness of immunotherapies and vaccines that are based on the early Wuhan isolate.

All currently approved vaccines employ the spike protein S, as it is the target for neutralizing antibodies.

Here we describe two SARS-CoV-2 isolates with unusually large deletions in the N-terminal domain (NTD) of the spike.

Cryo-EM structural analysis shows that the deletions result in complete reshaping of the NTD supersite, an antigenically important region of the NTD.

For both spike variants the remodeling of the NTD negatively affects binding of all tested NTD-specific antibodies in and outside of the NTD supersite.

For one of the variants, we observed a P9L mediated shift of the signal peptide cleavage site resulting in the loss of a disulfide-bridge; a unique escape mechanism with high antigenic impact.

Although the observed deletions and disulfide mutations are rare, similar modifications have become independently established in several other lineages, indicating a possibility to become more dominant in the future.

The observed plasticity of the NTD foreshadows its broad potential for immune escape with the continued spread of SARS-CoV-2.

DJ, Explanation in https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/scientists-warn-that-sars-cov-2-spike-exhibits-extreme-plasticity-and-will-continue-to-adopt-shape-shifting-strategies-for-immunity-escape- or https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/scientists-warn-that-sars-cov-2-spike-exhibits-extreme-plasticity-and-will-continue-to-adopt-shape-shifting-strategies-for-immunity-escape-

basic story-CoViD is able to find lots of mutation-selection to get over immunity...

Maybe the Public Health EMERGENCY of international concern could be over...the pandemic is not !

5. Conclusions

This study demonstrated evidence of natural infection with SARS-CoV-2 in a wide range of animal species existing in close contact with humans with the use of molecular and serological analyses. The degree of SARS-CoV-2 detection in animals was greater in 2021 than in 2022, correlating with a decrease in human infection rates over the same period. The proximity between humans and animals in this setting as well as the temporal correlation of positivity rates strongly suggest a human–animal transmission. However, there is a need for further research into the role of SARS-CoV-2-positive animals in the maintenance of the virus and transmission to humans and among animals. Continuous monitoring of the virus in animals and humans is recommended for preparedness in case of mutations that may increase the virulence and transmissibility of the virus as its moves from species to species.

          (Continue . . . )

While governments and health agencies have declared the COVID emergency to be over, SARS-CoV-2 will continue to do what viruses have done successfully for millions of years; evolve, adapt, and expand their host range.

Which means the possibility exists that a radically different variant could emerge from a non-human host for which we have little or no immunity.

All of which makes the continued surveillance of companion animals, farmed animals, and wildlife for new COVID variants a wise investment.

DJ, CoViD and H5N1 spreading in non-human hosts will see those virusses showing up in a new shape within a certain time in humans...Ignoring that emergency is "unwise"...

Lots of Non Pharma Interventions do limit risks...However "politics" should do more to limit risks...
