The above links are to an article in the library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, also known as the Mormons.  The info in it is often of a spiritual nature, and appropriate to our forum as a source for information on why and how to prepare for difficult times.  A poster from Utah, in a Private Message, said:

"Yes, our faith asks us to keep a year's supply of food on hand in case of emergency.  It is part of becomming self-sufficient.  The nice thing about this is that the church has 50+ years of research on how to store food and what types of food to store.  The website is http://www.providentliving.org/  and the topic is under food storage and preparedness on the left.   There is a calculator on that site as well. "

In my life, I have lived in the southwest and northeast corners of Utah while working in the oilfield.  The people of Utah have always been open and welcoming, and very generous with their time and knowledge base.

I believe that we have a lot to learn, and there is no need to re-invent the wheel when it comes to preparations and food storage.

Speaking of which, I told my Mormon co-worker that I'd be at his door if a pandemic hit, and he said "Go ahead, I won't be there."

Wonder what he meant by that?

He's probably got his preps in some hideawy cabin you don't know exists. Most Mormon's I know never mention their preps. They have them they are a fact of life but they feel no need to discuss them. They probably don't because they don't want people coming begging help when there is a crisis. After all those preps were purchased to help their own family.

The LDS Prep info is great I have used it as a guideline to help me in developing my own preps list.

Good for finding my ancestors, but other than that I'll forget they exist.

Grav.

I am a Utah Mormon.  Many LDS people do not have a full year's supply--although I know of some that do.  Most are, however, like us and working on it.  We have six kids and are at about five months.  The LDS church really encourages it's members not to go into debt to obtain food storage, so it is a process.   I think the reason church members are asked to have a full year is so that in case of emergency, we can give some of what we have to others.  That is purely speculation--not an official church policy.  (And Grav, I'd still share what I had with you!  Smile)

As a side note for cheap prepping, there are LDS-owned dry pack canneries throughout North America, and even some in other regions, where you can buy and #10 can basic foods (wheat, sugar, beans, rice, pasta, oats, shortening, etc.) at cost.   I bought 200 lbs of wheat a month ago for about $34.00.  The only caveat is that you have to donate labor to the cannery to purchase, as all the labor is volunteer and food or supplies can not be purchased for resale.  To schedule an appointment, you would just need to contact the cannery.  These are primarily for church member's use, but if there is an opening (and there often is) there should be no problem using the equipment.

As an interesting FYI, Mike Leavitt is a mormon.

Sorry you feel that way Grav. Most I know are good folks. I'm not one myself and don't want to be but have friends and a few distant relatives who are. Perhaps you have just had a bad experience.

slcmom,

Thank you for sharing.  Unlike other posts yours is constructive and helpful.  I intend to see if we have a kitchen around here.
Thanks again....

Another note.  If you go to the LDS church food storage website, http://www.providentliving.org/channel/0,11677,1706-1,00.html there is a link on the right hand side of the page entitled "Dry Pack Handouts" which has several PDF pages worth of really good info including:

how much to store for children
how to use oxy absorbers
what products to dry pack and what products to keep in a freezer
water storage and treatment
a basic cookbook

Happy prepping!
