BNT162b2 - The Pfizer vaccine

Recent news reports suggest that this vaccine is 90% effective.

There are some caveats.

 Pfizer has not shared enough information with outside scientists to validate their report. We don't know how well the vaccine will work in older people. We don't know how long immunity will last after vaccination. Still, assuming that the Pfizer results hold up, this is good news.

BNT162b2 is a RNA vaccine. This means that viral RNA encoding the viral spike protein is introduced into the person being vaccinated and their own cells make the viral protein.

In this case, two mutations were introduced into the RNA to make the viral protein more immunogenic, i. e., generate a stronger immune response.

The RNA is introduced via lipid nanoparticles. This whole approach is a bit novel, but, given the information provided by Pfizer, appears safe and effective. It is critical that Pfizer provide every bit of clinical and preclinical data they have to outside investigators so that the public has confidence in the vaccine.

	Moderna's vaccine is 94.5% effective!! Dr. Fauci is on the morning news programs discussing it at this moment. He thinks we will have a viable vaccine by the end of Dec and will be vaccinating high risk then.
