WHO: Iraqi case could be H2H

Maria Cheng of the World Health Organization set off an improvised explosive device today. Then again, it may not have been improvised but deliberately built and deployed:

There is a possibility this is a case of limited human-to-human spread of the virus, Cheng acknowledged. "Based on the evidence we have right now, I don't think we can rule it out."

"We still don't have a lot of details about the context of these cases; whether or not they both had contact with sick chickens or just how much contact they had. But given that he was said to have taken care of her when she was ill, that certainly does raise our level of concern."

Usually WHO prefers to look on the bright side of life, and to downplay any chance of human-to-human transmission of H5N1. If she's now going to bring up the possibility, then the evidence she mentions—however scanty—must be disturbing indeed.

We might also reflect that the girl died on January 17, two weeks ago. Tests first indicated she was H5N1 negative. So the local authorities have been dithering around for days, giving the flu a chance to spread. That's why Cheng's comment looks deliberate: to get the world's attention in a hurry. Well, I hope she's succeeded.

Given what I posted about WHO saying that we are on a pandemic alert...1 level below a pandemic ; the pieces are starting to fall into place! OMG! It seems as though we are going into a pandemic! The next few days are going to be really relevant! Everyone watch the news and post all you can about the news releases! Since countries and the Who are not being exactly forthcoming about this...WE ARE TRULY ON OUR OWN!

Don't know how they can really tell if the uncle got it from the teenager or from exposure to the same chickens (they lived in the same household, which reportedly had chickens die mysteriously.)  I found an article reporting that the doctor who took care of the girl said she had touched a dead chicken in her home 3 days before she became ill (despite what the girl's mom said).   It helps when the WHO looks at the genes of the virus to see if it has actually developed any new mutations.  If it's the same as it's been all along, it's probably still just chickern to person transmission.

I concur meewee unfortunately it doesn't look like the television media have taken this crisis seriously.  I have seen abosolutely nothing on the network world news the last several days about the bird flu.  I told my wife today, I am giving up on network news if they do not report on the Iraqi girl's death.  The country needs to know what's happening.  I thought for sure that Oprah's show the other day would wake up the media but it didn't.  I rely solely on the Internet to stay abreast of the situation.  I work with people who have no idea what's happening with the virus overseas and these are highly educated Engineers.  It is UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

I am starting to believe that they did and this is why they are saying that this is H2H! Iraq blew the whistle on the Who and now they are scrambling to cover their a**es! Because this is going to get out and there is nothing they can do!

Here's a quote from the Iraqi girl's mother:

The girl's mother rejected the bird flu results, but acknowledged that a number of her chickens had mysteriously died before her daughter's death.

"My daughter did not die from bird flu," Fatima Abdullah, 50, told The Associated Press. "She did not like chickens nor had anything to do with them. She did not take care of these birds."

You have to understand that the only way that the WHO will ever even admit that there is a H2H case, is if their back is against the wall and they have no other recourse! So If they admit that there is a possibility you can bet everthing you have that there is possitive evidence that there is fact the there is H2H! It's like pulling the teeth of the devil! He would never admit to any case of fault unless there is irrefutable truth that this was so!

yea, the chicken to human alabi  is getting pretty thin  in iraq and other parts of the world, so is the migratory bird thing.

We can't stop the spread in whatever form and people are dying from whatever.

So vaccinate all the chickens you want, observe all the birds till you find dead ones and test them, watch the people die. bird to human human to bird all the same to me. as long as it's happening its happening. that simple.

Can't be beaten. We've never beaten a virus. And the first virus we're gonna try to beat is the nastiest to come around in a while. don't like those odds.

If it makes ya feel better for a little while go kill some chickens and watch for wild bird poop. you're wasting your time. it's on it's way.
