'Just Be Ready: Prepare Together': a Dozen Ways to Deal with Disasters
Date : 13/07/2007 @ 18:00 Source : PR Newswire 'Just Be Ready: Prepare Together': a Dozen Ways to Deal with Disasters Public Service Ad Campaign is Launched in 12 Languages to Encourage Residents to Be Prepared LOS ANGELES, July 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health today introduced its "Just Be Ready: Prepare Together" emergency preparedness ad campaign as the next phase of its ongoing effort to encourage residents to ready themselves in case of an emergency. The television, radio, print, and online public service announcements (PSAs) were developed in 12 languages to reach the County's diverse population. The PSAs were showcased today at a press conference held at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration in downtown LA. Languages include English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Khmer, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Armenian, Russian, Arabic, and Farsi. "The 'Just Be Ready: Prepare Together' public service announcements are reminders that today is the best day to assemble an emergency preparedness kit," said Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH, Director of Public Health and Health Officer, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. "Unfortunately, earthquakes, wildfires or even pandemic flu will not give us a few days advance warning to get our supplies together. So, it's essential to create a family plan and an emergency supply kit today." The campaign urges the public to assemble an emergency preparedness kit containing Ten Essential Items: Water, Food, Cash & Important Documents, Clothes, Flashlight, First Aid Kit, Medicine, Radio, Toiletries, and Tools. The PSA opens with a woman checking the messages on her answering machine. The first two messages are mysterious, with voices telling her that they plan to bring "cash and a passport" and a "flashlight;" the next messages intend to draw in the viewer or listener by saying they will bring "extra clothes" and "toiletries," before it is revealed that the callers are referring to emergency preparedness supplies. An emergency can happen anytime; it is critical that our communities are prepared. The PSAs add another layer of visibility to the current "Just Be Ready: Prepare Together" emergency preparedness campaign. In March, the County unveiled a mobile education outreach program using a Recreational Vehicle (RV) as its centerpiece. The RV has traveled to many schools and community events and will visit additional sites throughout the year. The Department of Public Health is working with a number of organizations including the LA County Sheriff's Department, the Office of Emergency Management, the LA County Fire Department, LA County Parks and Recreation, the American Red Cross, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and other partners in this campaign. The Department of Public Health is committed to protecting and improving the health of the nearly 10 million residents of Los Angeles County. Through a variety of programs, community partnerships and services, Public Health oversees environmental health, disease control, and community and family health. Public Health comprises more than 4,000 employees and an annual budget exceeding $700 million. For more information on Public Health, please visit http://www.lapublichealth.org/.
