WHO: Bird Flu crisis very serious
1/17/2008 12:19:40 PM A WB government designated official culls private poultry stock in Margram, Bibhum district The World Health Organisation or WHO has warned that India has big trouble on its hands - hinting that the Bird Flu outbreak could perhaps be one of the worst ever, more severe than previously encountered. A WHO statement released today (January 17) reads: "More serious risk factors are associated with this current outbreak than previously encountered, including that the affected areas are more widespread and because of proximity to extended border areas." Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar meanwhile has said today that an alert has been sounded not only in West Bengal but across the country. "We have taken strong measures to counter the Bird Flu threat from the Bangladesh border. We have passed on all information to the West Bengal government and sounded a countrywide alert. International guidelines are being followed in the culling operations in West Bengal," said Pawar. The statement comes after the Centre, facing a crisis and coming under harsh criticism for its handling of the outbreak, began a blame game yesterday alleging that the state government had pressed the alarm button at least a week after it received information about abnormal poultry deaths in the state. TIMES NOW has been told that the WB government sat quiet for a week in willfull controvention of rules which state that the Centre must be informed about unexplained and largescale bird deaths within 24 hours. The West Bengal government reported the fact that chickens were dying in Birbhum and South Dinajpur districts of the state on January 11, whereas the first report of the deaths came to state health officials on January 4. Timeyl action could thus not be taken to limit the outbreak which may have already spread to neighbouring districts like Hoogly, South 24 Paraganas and Murshidabad. . |

The latest from India. The Bird Flu may have spread to Bihar & Assam to states near West Bengal. Also interesting article found on ndtv.com http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/gentemplate_generic.aspx?template=birdfluscare
Apparently the WHO hasn't placed any restrictions on the export of poultry from India!!!!! Amazing India, which reported an outbreak of bird flu, has not received any advisory from the World Organisation of Animal Health to ban poultry exports, Agriculture and Food Minister Sharad Pawar said on Wednesday. ''So far, we have not received any (advisory for) export ban on our poultry products,'' the minister said. He said the government had notified France-based World Organisation of Animal Health about the outbreak yesterday and ''we are waiting for the response.'' As a precautionary measure, the union government has already restricted trade and movement of poultry from West Bengal. Localised occurrence of the highly contagious disease was reported from Birbhum and South Dinajpur districts yesterday. Following this, about four lakh birds have been culled in the state. The places in and around these districts have also been alerted about the incident, Pawar said. According to government data for 2005-06, India exported poultry products worth Rs 167 crore. Asked about any impact on human beings, he said: ''There are no reports of humans being infected with bird flu and the situation is under control.'' |

Have you noticed a the oriental food buffets - and Thai and all that is my favorite - chicken dominates the meat dishes next to fish. It is going to be sad day when I have to give up my Chinese Buffet addiction. MC |

Thanks Albert, as a matter of fact I just finished Chicken Kebabs. They were quite nice :-) I don't have alot of options since Beef is Holy here. West Bengal is pretty far up north so until it gets closer I will continue business as usual with few options.

For a Southern boy like myself, I've got to have my fried yard bird (er...I mean fried chicken). Life just isn't much worth living without a good meal of fried chicken, with mashed potatoes, skillet gravy, corn-on-the-cob, and fluffy rolls. Oh yes, and sweetea.

It may seem a little unusual that we are posting chicken food things, but quite honestly in the last 14 days I am been buried in Avian and other disease data. I owe another apology to Albert on the issues in one country as to further cases. Having over three days containing private citizens and people in health care in X country, all the cases have dried up. Despite other posts about multiple cases, observation of hospitals, and other data, using my best search engine which is a slayer in terms of finding stuff, there are individuals pumping out reports which are totally unsubstantiated. So, thank you for the chicken lighter talk. I am sure we will have more gruesome reports and news, but I was getting a little burnt. It is good to see you Coyote and Lori and some of the very zealous posters here. (and Pebbles.. I can't list everybody - but you put out a lot of posts.. good ones) You are good people. Sometimes even I get misinformed and fall prey to a whopper that originates from one source and then all of a sudden is a massive hoax. Yes I will use the H word. I am usually the one who gets a fair share of the cheese stands alone. I am read, a lot in the Avian field, and have spoken to many, and yet many people are hesitant to post even if some topics are taboo. Coyote, it is getting nasty out there. I am getting reports from New York of some illnesses - and it is absolutely a knock out when health staff will say "oh yeah, we knew about that." This is the equivalent to oh yea we knew it was H2H in Nam years ago. (2 be continued..posts get too long) Medclinician |

The lighter side of chicken talk - so we all, the heavy posters are getting a little battle fatigued on AFT.
We are definitely the veterans having survived waves of agendas and misinformation. I feel like i know certain users while I know none who post here personally. So Coyote, things are not well in Birdland. And it is time to crank up the engines and find out - we posted 10 countries that are close to endogenous and infected yesterday. The toes that have been stepped on on issues which we will not even go there have gotten pretty fierce. The recent and upcoming warzone on ACLU versus quarantining of entire cities - this is news by the way. http://www.pandemicflu.gov/plan/federal/index.html Read this stuff VERY CAREFULLY. People read what I put up but the sound of silence is deafening. First, Bird Flu is getting worse. We have more clusters, nastier strains, h2h (although rare so far) and now we find we can pick it up off of surfaces. It lives outside the body for X time and you don't need to touch a sick bird. This like proof or near certainty of H2H in Nam is no small thing. As the stock market in India shakes, more Swans are positive in U.K.(I told you we had many more Swans infected than the two who came back negative and that U.K. has a bird flu problem and will. We have mega confirmations in some countries, as in sample destroyed or ruined and positives become negatives - Bird Flu is spreading and it is mutating. Crisis? Yep, afraid so. Media report reflection of the problem - lot of unhappy chickens in Russia and India right now - and denial is getting very much as spin, really pro. it has become a science. Can you contain a city with quarantine? Will we try? This is a knock down drag out fight argument. There is a plan. Last version Homeland in November. I posted it. ACLU has read it and is way stressed. Read it. And keep reading here and wherever you can find the real deal. I think Albert keeps the throttle here pretty tight. But often I have really thought about this and we cannot AFFORD to go off on these tangents of all kinds of data that cannot stand up under hard core checking. Nuff said... keep reading. There's lots to put up. It is not over. Medclinician |

The civil libertarians will howl whn I tell them about the Kansas health Laws that gives the authorities the right to suspend public meeting rights. It gives power to the local law enforcement the power to quarrentine and to close businesses and buildings. |
