Flu shots for children urged following 2 deaths

First published: Wednesday, February 6, 2008
ALBANY -- State health officials are urging parents to have their children vaccinated for influenza after two deaths were linked to the virus. A 7-month-old infant from Monroe County and a 7-year old child from Orange County died this week.

Last flu season, nine New York children died.

The health department recommends all children, especially those 6 months to 5 years old, be vaccinated.

In addition, all children with chronic medical conditions should be vaccinated. Immunity to the flu develops two weeks after vaccination.

Contact local health departments for information about vaccination clinics.
