Bird flu may be closer than we think
With bird flu continuing its march around the world, we decided to interview Dr. Anthony Fauci, the federal government's leading infectious disease expert, for tonight's show. He thinks bird flu could be in the United States in less than a year.
"I would not be surprised if in a period of several months to a year we would
see this even in the United States." - Dr. Anthony Fauci

For a long time, we believed bird flu was a disease that was "over there." Americans paid little attention because it was as peculiar as monkey pox and Gambian rats. But slowly the virus has marched around the world in birds and in humans.

Now, Dr. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, says it would not be surprising if it came here relatively soon. Are we ready? The answer is almost certainly no.

We don't have enough medicine, vaccines or hospital beds if bird flu starts spreading in the United States. We learned valuable lessons this past year from disasters like Katrina. If there are obvious warnings, we need to pay attention. It is not cause for panic, just attentiveness and action.

Intersting show.  Some good content but no mentions of what could really happen to supply chains, economies, medical system, quarantines, etc. - only the ongoing hat-hanging hope of a vaccine or other medical solution.  Shows poor and desperate people in Nigeria grabbing the chickens back from their (throw them down an old dry well) grave as soon as officials leave.

Good Evening Everyone,

Elisa and I think that CNN missed the mark.  Do they think that by showing testing of the chicken market in NY that they can stop a spread of the B/F in NY?  Give me a break....  What they should have been telling the population of the US is get ready!!  Get a plan together to protect yourself and your family.  The worst or maybe it could be said the BEST thing that could have happened for the B/F is playing out right now.  This is the spread into Africa here the B/F has a large number of possible hosts which are already unhealthy, suffering from AIDS, poor nutrition and a host of other illnesses.  I mean the B/F has many possible other viruses to mutate with and a population of unhealthy people to infect  We better get ready..  It is on its way and no matter how much testing of chickens they do in NY can stop it.

I agree! I'm not even saying "if" anymore. It's "when".

After the stories that I have been reading and pictures I've seen from Nigeria, I can't even eat chicken anymore. I don't care if it's still safe here, or  if cooked throughly, I just can't do it. Time to get a Vegan cookbook soon.

I think it was a fluff/trial balloon piece.  I'd be intrested to see what their polling on that segment shows.

No mention of spread, entry points or death rates, BUT If Sange Gupta was really in Thailand for that topic  more may be coming.  It costs $$ to move him around.

I found the report very disappointing and I do not think it will resonate with people and move them to find out about how they should be prepping. I was hoping for alot more info to empower the people but if everyone ran out to stock up now the shelves would be empty and panic would ensue and that wouldn't do us any good either. I plan on watching Newt Ging. on Fox(FNN) tomarrow night - 10pm - and see what kind of report they put out. I think the Anderson Cooper piece might've been cut short due to the mud slide. How many disasters are we supposed to juggle at the same time?

K - what to yo mean it costs $ to move S.G. around?
