Talking up the   Gas Well Raid ...

( a few farmer will benefit ) a few small drilling outfits and some Major Coporations ... not

the majority.... worried about what it will do to the face of our state not to mention our

water table/ water sheds.

Natural gas boom brings riches to a rural US town

Tioga County surrounding Wellsboro Pennsylvania, East Resources Inc., drilled 42

Marcellus wells in 2009 they expect to sink another 200 this year.

The company and its affiliates employ about 60 people in the county.

Some say it's going to be a 20-year project

OMG
20 years of ...  the unknown chemicals used, increased taxes for road damage,
the smell,  the noise, the concern for groundwater contamination?

Gas Well Drilling in Pennsylvania
.........................................................

What problems do they have with gas well drilling in Pennsylvania?

Do we want the same problems in NY State?

DEP Orders Partial Shutdown of Two Natural Gas Drilling Operations in Lycoming County

...............................................................................................................................................

"Drilling for natural gas is a water intensive endeavor," said DEP Northcentral Regional

Office Director Robert Yowell. "That's even more so in the case of the Marcellus Shale,

where this type of drilling can often times consume millions of gallons of water. In the

course of their operations,

neither Range Resources nor Chief Oil and Gas have taken the necessary precautions to

protect nearby streams from pollution or impairment during the drilling process.

"We need to ensure that bodies of water involved near Hoagland Run and First Fork

Larry's Creek- both high quality tributaries- and Mud Run and Big Sandy Run are

protected for the residents of Lycoming County and the entire Susquehanna watershed."

DEP's action coincides with an enforcement action taken by the Susquehanna River

Basin Commission under its own regulatory authority.

Range Resources and Chief Oil and Gas failed to obtain the required approval from the

SRBC for the ongoing water withdrawal.

Permits are required for this type of activity because of the potential to impair or destroy

the basin's water resources and cause pollution.

MEADVILLE -- The Department of Environmental Protection has issued a cease and desist order to U.S. Energy Development Corp. of Getzville, N.Y., for persistent and repeated violations of environmental laws and regulations. The order prohibits the company from conducting all earth disturbance, drilling and hydro-fracturing operations throughout Pennsylvania.

The 302 violations that serve as the basis for the order were documented over a period of two years, beginning in August 2007. About one-third of the violations have been resolved, but 197 violations remain uncorrected.

EPA Announces  "Eyes on Drilling"  Tipline
....................................................................

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced the creation of the “Eyes on Drilling” tipline for citizens to report non-emergency suspicious activity related to oil and natural gas development.

The agency is asking citizens to call 1-877-919-4EPA (toll free) if they observe what appears to be illegal disposal of wastes or other suspicious activity.

Anyone may also send reports by email to eyesondrilling@epa.gov. Citizens may

provide tips anonymously if they don’t want to identify themselves.

In the event of an emergency, such as a spill or release of hazardous material,

including oil, to the environment, citizens are advised to call the National Response

Center at 1-800-424-8802.

Public concern about the environmental impacts of oil and natural gas drilling has increased in recent months, particularly regarding development of the Marcellus Shale formation where a significant amount of activity is occurring. While EPA doesn’t grant permits for oil and gas drilling operations, there are EPA regulations which may apply to the storage of petroleum products and drilling fluids. The agency is also very concerned about the proper disposal of waste products, and protecting air and water resources.

EPA wants to get a better understanding of what people are experiencing and observing as a result of these drilling activities. The information collected may also be useful in investigating industry practices Thumbs%20Up

People... a Heads Up
.....................................

If you know of any gas well drilling near your area ( those lines are far reaching )

Get your water tested now... now.  That way if there is any trouble in the future and your

water goes bad, you will have proof that on this date the water was FINE.

And..

If the Drillers think they will not be responsible for the repair of roads that their heavy

equipment travels over... think again.  New York State will not let that happen.

Drillers will be held responsible for the upkeep of roads...expensive Yes?

The people in the industry say this drilling will go on for 20 years... hmm, road upkeep for

20 yrs is quite an undertaking.

People are not listening.   20 years.

Not only that but scientists say that to build an underground network to disturb and

distribute Radon Gas is... not too bright?

Oh the Folly that lies ahead.

The FingerLakes Group has hired a PR Firm For talking up the Fingerlakes tourist area.   Have they seen a map of the immense number of gas wells to be drilled?  The state will look like cheese cloth.  Have the seen the ugly buildings that go up with these wells dotted on the landscape?   Heavy equipment traffic for 20 years is a nasty one
for the new PR firm to circumvent I imagine.

What does a Gas Well Blow Out Look Like?
.............................................................................
smells real bad too.

Blowouts are more common than people think...
I would hope that the equipment to cap the blowout arrives soon. Being a resident about 1/2 mile from the site has not been pleasant. The smell has been awful (like burning tar not rotten eggs) and the sound pollution has really disturbed our normally quite neighborhood. My husband and I can hear it inside our home. I would hope that something will be done to put more quality control on the devise that failed. Read this has happened before. Especially since we have a park within 250 yards from this site where kids play often. This could have been a terrible incident.

This Gas/ Oil well mess  is hard to clean up...

These wells are used to dispose of saltwater and other nonhazardous oil field waste

by pumping them into geological formations deep below the surface.

Our Beautiful Countryside...       Terrorized.

...My family owns a beautiful farm (non-working) in Bradford County, PA,
in a little hamlet called French Azilum. In the summer, we spend time there,
resting, breathing in the fresh air, enjoying the wild flowers, the bright stars
and planets on a clear moonlit night, and swimming in the Susquehanna River.

It is a paradise to us, and has been our retreat since the 1930s. If gas drilling
is allowed to continue, Bradford County and all of Pennsylvania will be
forever changed, ruined beyond repair.

5.5-magnitude quake hits Canada

2010-06-24 02:30:00
Last Updated: 2010-06-24 09:37:41

Ottawa: An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 on the Richter scale struck the Ontario-Quebec border region in Canada on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) sai

Horizontal Drilling Added

The newest technology used by the industry increases the scope of fracking. By drilling horizontal wells, where the drill bit is steered along a horizontal trajectory, the well bore is exposed to as much of the shale gas reservoir as possible. Combined with hydraulic fracturing, the two technologies create many kilometres of contact area for natural gas to flow into a well, giving the operator a fast payback.

BC energy activist Arthur Caldicott, a frequent contributor to the Watershed Sentinel, explained by email: Fracking "is a nearly-continuous operation in shale gas production. Wells may be fracked up to seventeen times along their entire length."

Now some geologists are saying that the use of horizontal drilling and fracking for shale production exhausts the well within a mere eight years, with a decline in output of 75 percent in the first year alone. Some are even calling the sector “a speculative bubble.”

In other words, the drilling and fracking endanger the groundwater and deplete rivers and lakes all for a quick payoff to the industry and the province, after which the taxpayer is left with the clean up.

Improper removal of drill bit from unstable well led to uncontrolled influx of gas and water

Seems like a lot of these "kick's " going around?

"The disaster was caused by pulling the drill string and drill bit out of the hole while the hole was unstable," Davies said. "This triggered a very large 'kick' in the well, where there is a large influx of water and gas from surrounding rock formations that could not be controlled.

 Has Mayor Bloomberg read this?

How safe is New Yorks' Drinking water if any of this

goes WRoNg?

How sane is this?

New York State is earthquake prone and they want to inject the toxic waste water from the drilling UNDER the Water table...  OMG.

Companies looking for disposal options may drill a disposal well or convert an existing deep well into an underground injection well for wastewater, Kappel says.

The geologic formations most likely to accept injected waste are the Oriskany and Medina sandstones and the Potsdam layer. Old Trenton-Black River wells may be converted to disposal wells, too, as they have larger spaces for liquids to fill.

What hydro-geologists must determine is       ( Who?  When? where? NAMES...)

how porous the formation is, how permeable the layer is and the thickness of the layer.

They also need to know the locations of

abandoned gas or oil (or even drinking water) wells in the area before injecting waste, because any unplugged wells could provide a conduit for waste fluid to contaminate groundwater.

"It is important that they do an injection test prior to any sustained liquid injection and observe the limits of injection capacity," Kappel notes. In one case a company tried to inject too much fluid into their wells. As the wells filled, they increased the pressure, and eventually the injections set off seismic activity, he added.

For the municipal officials attending the forum, the most encouraging news is that they have the power to regulate disposal wells. "If they have the laws in place," Treichler emphasizes.

NO THANKS!

Flaring and venting of natural gas
.................................................................

from oil & gas wells is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. Its contribution to

greenhouse gases has declined by three-quarters in absolute terms since a peak in the

1970s of approximately 110 million metric tons/year and now accounts for 0.5% of all

anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions.[4]

The World Bank estimates that over 150 billion cubic metres of natural gas are flared or

vented annually, an amount worth approximately 30.6 billion dollars,

equivalent to 25 percent of the United States' gas consumption or

30 percent of the European Union's gas consumption per year.[5]

This flaring is highly concentrated: 10 countries account for 75% of emissions, and twenty

for 90%.

A group of Alabama residents went to court in 1995 seeking to

Letting Loose Trapped Radon Gas In The Shale
....

......................................................................................

Let the Big Gas Corps Address...

...Radiation suddenly appeared in a constellation of dangers the new gas rush could bring.

Some health-related web sites call radon "the silent killer." You might know it as NORM, "naturally occurring radioactive material." For about $15, you can get a test kit at a hardware store to see if radon in your house is within safe limits. If it isn't, you'd better find a way to vent it.

This low-level hazard wasn't much talked about until last month, when the general public became aware that the natural gas industry had focused on a black shale, the Marcellus Formation.

Radiation suddenly appeared in a constellation of dangers the new gas rush could bring. For everyone living above the black shale - it covers 54,000 square miles from southern New York across Pennsylvania to Ohio and West Virginia - the situation was no longer NORMal, and the public was no longer silent.

Finally....  Out In The Open
...............................................

A US House Committee member has broken their silence and expressed an opinion on the Safe Drinking Water Act. They claim diesel fuel being used in the process of hydraulic fracturing is possibly a violation of the Act. More than 1 million gallons of diesel fuel has apparently been used to recover natural gas by three of the biggest fracturing companies around.

Excellent article....   good people

Henry Waxma
n of California, Edward Markey of Massachusetts, and Diana DeGette of

Colorado, penned a letter to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson.

In their missive the trio contend that a pair of the biggest oilfield services companies, Halliburton (NYSE: HAL) and Baker Hughes' (NYSE: BHI) BJ Services unit, are part of a 12-company contingent that injected 32.2 million gallons of diesel or fluids containing diesel into wells in 19 states during the 2005 to 2009 period.
