WHO Calls Bird Flu Unprecedented in Scope
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

GENEVA (AP) -- Bird flu is unprecedented in its scope as an animal disease, costing the world's agriculture industry more than $10 billion and affecting the livelihoods of 300 million farmers, the World Health Organization said Monday.
The U.N. agency is meeting in Geneva to discuss global efforts to prepare in case bird flu mutates into a form easily passed between humans, potentially triggering a global pandemic.
Dr. Margaret Chan, who is spearheading WHO's efforts against bird flu, told more than 30 experts that the top priority was to keep the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu from mutating.
''Should this effort fail, we want to ensure that measures are in place to mitigate the high levels of morbidity, mortality and social and economic disruption that a pandemic can bring to this world,'' she said.
WHO says 174 people are confirmed to have caught bird flu, and 94 of them have died.
Chan said bird flu poses a greater challenge to the world than any previous infectious disease. Since February, the virus has spread to birds in 17 new countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, she said.
''No one can say when this will end,'' Chan said.
Global influenza pandemics -- as opposed to annual recurrences of seasonal flu -- tend to strike periodically. In the 20th century, there were pandemics in 1918, 1957 and 1968.
Dr. Mike Ryan, director of epidemic and pandemic alert and response at WHO, said, ''We truly feel that this present threat and any other threat like it is likely to stretch our global systems to the point of collapse.''
This is the first time world health authorities have tried to stop a global influenza pandemic before it begins. Chan referred to the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, as evidence of ''how much the world has changed.''
SARS infected 8,000 people, killing 800 of them.
''In a globalized economy, with high volume of international travel, vulnerability to new disease threats is universal,'' she said. ''It is the same for the rich and for the poor.''
WHO spokeswoman Maria Cheng said experts hope to isolate areas where there is a bird flu outbreak and establish agreements allowing international health authorities to respond quickly, testing viruses and implementing containment measures.
Public health measures to quarantine areas, isolate people or help give antiviral medicine to those infected with bird flu also are on the agenda of the meeting, which ends Wednesday.
Even if a pandemic cannot be stopped, WHO says such measures can buy time for health authorities to improve their response strategies and stave off the disease until a pandemic vaccine can be produced.
''Concern has mounted progressively, and events in recent weeks justify that concern,'' Chan said.

I will stand by what I've been saying for months: If H5N1 turns H2H (with easy transmissibility) and stays as lethal as it currently is (50%+ fatality rate), we could expect deaths into the billions. BILLIONS. That number is unfathomable and will lead to it's own set of related diseases. Virologist have been predicting from the beginning that H5N1 will become less virulent over time. Why has that not happened? Evolution through recombination has been happening but why no less virulence yet??? That is very bad!
Once we go H2H, eventually 100% of the planet will be exposed to H5N1 and depending on the virus' speed in spreading across the planet and our ability to produce vaccine in time, the deaths will easily grow beyond even the darkest of predictions.
And just like in 'The Stand', there would be a need for garbage trucks to be used to collect the bodies. A horrid prediction. I hope we don't see this day.

The Stand was just a novel and that plague was man made. We have no mother Abigail to run to. I hope it will follow the 1918 strain. That is my hope and prayer.

Hopes and prayers ain't going to make the world different, Bird Flu sure a all he!! will! Figure on the worst and have a party if it's not as bad. Return to 1900 level of civilization is well within the realm of possibilities, not a collapse but a regression to a different way of life, plan accordingly!

Typhoid, Diphtheria, Cholera, and God knows what else, doesn't sound so good to me. Oh, I forgot Malaria and Scabies.
Life for most was very very hard work in 1900, for the few it wasn't bad. Watch the series on PBS, will definitely make you think a bit more about how much easier life is now.

I know this probably isn't the right thread but can anyone recommend masks for me to purchase to protect my family? i am just in the beginning phase of preparation, my hubby thinks i'm a bit nuts but I have a child, 3 dogs, a cat, a ferret and a partridge in a pear tree!!!! If this comes to pass (which I think looks imminent) I want to have the most effective items.

This is typical advert:
Each pack contains 20 compact valved respirator protecting against BIRD
FLU/SARS.
Standard: EN149:2001 FFP2, CE Marked. Meets NIOSH 42 CFR 84 N95
requirements.
DO NOT CONFUSE THIS MASK WITH POOR FITTING CHINESE MASKS
Do a google search with N95 for USA

Yes it is but not all agree on the safety of any type of masks. Read the posts
on the Pandemic Preparations threads at the front page. Personally, I will not
be bothering with masks. Some say Nurses use them so they must work but
this virus can get in the eyes, ears and other unmentionable orifices after
touching something which is infected. I'm using luck and complete isolation
from the rest of the world. Probably go mad.

Well- to build a church one would need a good cornorstone, otherwise it won't last when the big bad wolf comes and blows it down. Having the right foundation may just enable long term survival whether the BF kills you or not. Issues and choices. Problems and solutions. Some work - some don't. Still waters run deep whether you are in the 21st century or end up in the 11th. Oh- don't forget lice and bedbugs. Does the BF have any effect on them?

Christ already built His church...it's the people, not a building.
Whew!!!... One less thing to have to worry about!

Personally just give me an oak grove...
I've done a little masonry though.
What about Aids? Do you think if society colapses there will be plenty
of condoms floating around for those who need them? I think there will
be unsafe sex. So lice, bedbugs, and Aids.
