State: 263 hospitalized from flu so far this season
DENVER — Influenza is in full swing across the country and while Colorado numbers are low compared to some other states, some 263 people have been hospitalized because of the flu this season. According to the Colorado Department of Health, the 263 hospitalizations came from 25 counties across the state. Virtually all of them are the result of the 2009 H1N1 virus. The flu is usually most dangerous to children, the elderly and people with immune deficiencies. Flu shots are still available for anyone who hasn’t gotten one yet. The Centers for Disease Control says the flu is the most severe in southern states including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. In Texas, at least five people have died after catching the flu — all from swine flu. Health authorities say this year’s flu vaccine can prevent swine flu and several other flu strains, if people get vaccinated. Last year, according to the CDC, only 45 percent of Americans got the flu shot. Source |
