Bird Flu Almost Ready to Go Pandemic

Scientists discover bird flu virus one gene away from human to human transmission.

(PRWEB) March 8, 2006 -- Scientists have now verified through gene sequencing that the H5N1 virus has been rapidly mutating and evolving towards a strain that will be deadly for humans. Six months ago scientists estimated that the H5N1 virus needed to make about five changes to it’s gene structure for it to be deadly for humans. Now it requires only one last change.

The present strains of avian influenza (bird flu) are mainly infecting only birds, with only a relatively small number of humans being infected. The reason for the drastic preparations now being made by most countries in the world to protect themselves from this virus is that the H5N1 virus still has a very high mortality rate. It can kill up to 100% of domestic chickens and at present can kill an alarming 55% of people that become infected. If a pandemic occurs from a virus with even one quarter of this mortality rate then the world consequences will be horrendous.

From the World Health Organization statistics only 190 people have been infected since 2003 with the H5N1 virus and of these 92 have died. Most of these people had some direct contact with infected chickens of some kind. Some inefficient human to human transmission has also occurred in some cases.

It appears that it is inevitable that a bird flu pandemic will eventually occur. Some scientists expect that the last genetic change needed for efficient human to human transmission by the H5N1 virus may occur when migrating birds carrying the H5N1 virus begin their return journey in Spring. (Northern hemisphere). This means that there is a possibility that a pandemic could occur within two months.

The H5N1 bird flu virus has now spread to at least 40 countries around the world. The general unhygienic practices combined with poorly developed health systems in some of these countries will create many opportunities for the last genetic change needed for the H5N1 virus to spread from humans to humans as easily as the common cold. It is likely that this change could occur several times in different countries. If it occurs in an underdeveloped country then there will be little chance of detecting it or stopping it from spreading worldwide.

It is estimated that when the H5N1 virus changes to an efficient human to human strain that it would only take three weeks for human H5N1 virus outbreaks to occur everywhere around the world. Computer models from the Los Alamos laboratory predict that it will only take another three to six weeks for the pandemic to spread completely through a country and reach it’s peak infection rate. This rapid rate of spreading infection will be due to the international and domestic plane transport system. Since H5N1 has an incubation period of two to ten days then it will be impossible to screen infected but still contagious passengers. Depending on the country it originates in, a contagious and deadly H5N1 virus could be seeded around the world before health authorities are aware that a pandemic has started. The World Health Organization has stated that all health systems in every country will be overwhelmed and infected people will have to be cared for at home.

Apart from the direct consequences of large numbers of infected people dying, a potentially worst catastrophe will also occur. Recent surveys have shown that only 30% to 50 % of workers would show up for work if a pandemic occurred. Combined this with 50% of willing workers being infected and others being quarantined then the workforce will be seriously deleted.

It would be very prudent to expect essential supplies and services of any kind will be in very short supply throughout the main wave of the pandemic. This may occur throughout the whole world at the same time. If you think about the possible nightmare consequences of this then you will realize the importance of stocking up your own personal supplies now. Panic buying will ensure that no stocks will be available when the pandemic begins. There is a series of important items to help protect you from the virus which can be found at http://www.bird-flu-influenza.com.

Us officials are now going state to start telling communities to prepare for a six week quarantine. Ontario is bringing in legislation to fine absentee qualified health workers $100,000 and one jail for each day absent. Australian local councils are all attending government sponsored bird flu workshops. These isolated government actions suggests something may be happening soon.

Information from governments to the public is being suppressed and downplayed to prevent panic. The Australian government will not release information to the public on how to prepare for a pandemic and look after infected family members until a pandemic starts. By then it will be too late to buy stocks and understand what to do. This is not a normal flu.

I don't understand this.

I had thought it was already lethal, and that the genetic mutations it was undergoing had more to do with human to human transmission efficiency?

Just poor choice of diction.  By "deadly to humans" he may mean humans in the big plural "humanity" sense.
I had a little bird,
his name was Enza;
I opened the window,
and influenza.

this is a "press release" not a news report... note that it is put out by a
biology teacher and it is intended to get you to go to his site where he is
selling something...

part of what he referes to is from this news release

http://en.rian.ru/russia/20060307/43989397.html

and is the basis of the “one mutation” quote in this press release and that it
the author is building on old reports to build momemtum for his book. It’ll
be intereting to see if that is the case.

I second Eduk8or.  Thank you for an excellant evaluation of this source.  While what he says could be true, he's regurgitating and preaching (mostly to the choir, here).

If this is true - and I were a Canadian health care worker I would be pretty nervous.  What next - Policeman, fireman, bus drivers, truck drivers, newspaperboys - And - if they do this in Canada - what will happen in the US?  Freedom - Fly, Fly away

Nothing matters - Therefore everything matters

Yes.

Some of it is what has been reported but it was a little too hyped up for me and when I checked to see if there was a product to sell.....lo and behold!

Thank you. I know that eventually it's going to happen, I just was shocked and caught off gaurd by it......it makes me realize that as many  scenarios I have played over and over in my head, I am NOT mentally prepared for this at all.

Defense officials said the troops were stationed at embassies with the full approval of the U.S. ambassador in the countries but worked for the military's regional commander in collecting data useful for counter-terrorism missions.

The program highlights what some critics inside and outside the government have called the Pentagon's eagerness under Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to engage in intelligence- gathering functions typically handled by other government agencies, notably the < =yqin =http://yq.search.yahoo.com/search method=post>< = value='"CIA"' name=p> < = value=c1,i,yn,c3 name=sourceOrder> < = value='

CIA

' name=c3> CIA.

Bryan Whitman, a senior Pentagon spokesman, said the program had been going on for "a couple of years." Members of these Military Liaison Elements, or MLEs, come under the purview of the military's Special Operations Command, based at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, Whitman said.

"They don't hide the fact that they're in the military," Whitman said.

"They can provide situational awareness for the geographical commanders," he added. The Pentagon assigns senior commanders to head U.S. military operations in various regions, for example the Pacific region or the Middle East.

Officials said the groups are operating in regions where terrorist threats exist or could emerge. They declined to reveal the specific countries but said the total was about two dozen.

The New York Times, which first reported on the program, said the troops were in countries in Africa, Southeast Asia and South America.

Defense officials said the Military Liaison Elements could have as few as one person and at most "very small groups of individuals," and that the total number of troops worldwide performing the function was perhaps a few dozen.

"It's not a huge investment of people and resources, but it can yield big dividends," said Maj. Paul Swiergosz, another Pentagon spokesman.

Rumsfeld is a big proponent of special operations forces -- more highly trained and assigned more specialized, sensitive and secret jobs than regular military units.

Under Rumsfeld, special operations have been given more money and manpower, and the Bush administration has given Special Operations Command the lead role in military counter-terrorism endeavors.

"There is plenty of work to go around," said CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano. "One key to success is that intelligence activities in a given country be coordinated, a process in which the (CIA) chief of station plays a crucial role."

Defense officials acknowledged that people in other parts of the government might feel threatened or disenfranchised by this type of Pentagon work, but emphasized the need in the government to gather and share information better.

The role played by members of these special operations teams differs from that of U.S. military attaches in embassies, whose tasks include liaising with a host nation's military.

This is serious folks and there are no holds barred in this! Look at the thread of the UN test held in NY!  This Sucks!

It may very well be glorified ad copy, but far too few "professional" sources sum the problem up as clearly.

Maybe this could go under "Iowa"  however, there has been much talk in local news about how this will initially effect the markets for us.  However, today it was brought home as in affecting us here.  I went to work at my little trendy mall store and the headlines in the Daily Iowan (university based newspaper) were about how the U of I is planning for bird flu.  One of my "kids", my young, healthy college age sales associates tells me she has signed up for a new study at the University of Iowa(HUGE med research here btw) for Japanese Encephalits and hormonal effects on as they needed "patients" on some kind of hormonal therapy (ie birth control, etc...)  I told her I was sure it was foor bird flu vaccine research.  None of them care to hear about the pandemic but then I showed her the DI.  She got a little freaked.  Wow, does no one hear or see?

Absolutely on the ball people of the forum. This person is selling his book
and clicks to his site. Some or all the content could be true, but as a piece of
journalism it belongs in the gutter press. As a sales pitch it is crude,
unsophisticated and alarmist.

If he makes statements about 'ontario...", etc. he should qualify with names,
dates or at least a web link.

southerngentuk, if you are not the person himself, thanks for bringing this
to the forum's attention.

I read it, filtered it in my mind and posted it as i hadn`t seen the artical posted anywere here yet.

I in no way agreed with it, its just a post.

We all must post what we find so the many can be informed - and make there own opinons.
