A top U.N. health official has declared a regional bird flu crisis in West Africa, centered in Nigeria and Niger. The official predicts the virus will jump to North America within months.

Dr. David Nabarro, the U.N. Coordinator for Avian and Human Influenza says the spread of the H5N1 strain of bird flu has reached disturbing proportions in some parts of Western Africa. He says the entire region is at risk.

"We are truly focusing on Africa," said David Nabarro. "There is a regional crisis in West Africa associated with H5N1. Two countries are affected, Nigeria and Niger, but we are frankly anticipating that we will find the virus in other West African countries, and there's a lot of preparatory work underway."

It will be endemic in all Africa within 2 years as birds migrate back and forth.
Like Russia there will be no continent-wide co-ordination in the poultry
industry. Look out world.

I watched the press conference on the internet last night...someone posted a link on the ...If I hadn't believed before , I do now.  Nabarro was very convincing, and kept pressing the point that the time was NOW to have plans in place.

What I found interesting is hat he stated that some of these countries simply may not be able to report every case of flu, or suspected flu due to the infrastructure and geographic issues.  I think he was talking about Indonesia and China (forgive me, it was late and I was tired) because these countries were huge/spread out population-wise that all reports simply did not make it to the central authorities.  He indicated at least twice that he was very pleased with China's cooperation.

I dunno.  I'm iffy about China's "cooperation".  Seems to me if they were truly cooperating, we'd have some sequences in the Genbank by now.  Clearly, corruption and secrecy are rife in China, and have been for centuries. They have a rich history of suppression and coersion.  I point to SARS as an example.
