Eleven suspected human bird flu cases in Azerbaijan: WHO

09/03/2006 19:27

GENEVA, March 9, 2006 - Eleven suspected human cases of the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus, three of them fatal, are under investigation in Azerbaijan, the World Health Organisation said Thursday.

Maria Cheng, spokeswoman for the UN health agency, told АFР that the suspected victims, including eight members of a single family, all came from the same village near the Azerbaijani capital Baku.

"It is possible that they caught H5N1, because we already know that poultry were hit by the virus in neighbouring areas," said Cheng.

Flocks belonging to the patients had also been infected, but experts had yet to identify by what, she added.

Samples from the suspected human victims were being sent to a WHO-accredited laboratory in London to establish whether they had the H5N1 virus, Cheng said.

The results could be available in 24 hours or within two weeks, depending on the sample quality, she noted.

On Sunday, Azerbaijani authorities said they were investigating whether the deaths of two young children in the republic were caused by bird flu.

The two children were part of a family whose six members had been hospitalised with suspected pneumonia.

Several days earlier, Azerbaijani authorities had said that the H5N1 virus had hit poultry flocks, and ordered the slaughter of half a million birds.

Since it resurfaced in 2003, the virus has infected 175 people in seven countries and killed 96 of them, according to the WHO.

H5N1 spreads from birds to people in close proximity, but experts fear that it could mutate into a form that transmits easily among humans, leading to a global pandemic that could claim millions of lives.

Well, peeps, it looks like we have clustered outbreaks of human cases of H5N1, based on these reports from the Russian outer limits and Indonesia, if the info is reliable.

This does not surprise me.

What will surprise me is if there's a claim that a family of 8, if after confirming they're infected with H5N1, ALL CAUGHT THE VIRUS FROM BIRDS.

Time for me to plug my B.S. meter in, because it's getting deep.

Here is another tidbit that would suggest authorities have known about this one long enough to do any tests needed in the slowest lab in the world.

When asked if the family, which keeps chickens and has seen two children die in the last month

Yeah and so long as the potential damage from panic outweighs the current threat, it will continue to be that way. Obviously not a popular strategy for people that want to know the truth, but it is a rational decision. Most current systems in the world would not function if our cultures were based on absolute truth and openness. Powerful and necessary illusions, a thin veneer of respectability over a world thats just as brutal and messy as it always was. Since the end of world war 2, language and ideas have changed, but the underlying reality remains the same as it always was.

I am going to predict that WHO raises the alert level to 4 on or around March 15, 2006.

Blah Blah Blah    All I see on the news wire is a bunch of people, governments and organizations talking about bird flu.

The real facts are being withheld until they absolutely have to release them.
