This is very interesting. This thing is unstoppable. What is President Obama really thinking? It doesn't have to mutate to become a real threat. You can be within three feet of a carrier now and get it. I would say that close to being airborne? What do you think?

I will still argue the "airborne" point. How about a new term air-transmissable perhaps. The distances can really count when it comes to danger zones and protective equipment. That ebola is fantastically contagious is inargueable.

Suzi,if we use the US Military,it will not help but it will provide more likelihood that Ebola will be brought to this country by returning G.I.s,Johnray1

And therein lies the big probelomino. Our military is Africa's best hope but in so doing, we may then all be doomed. And at the least, our vets would be screwed by the VA.

Of course, if they "accidentally" ran into Boko Haram...

I say go for it. Put our military in protective suits, send them in and also use some of our military doctors to help get this thing under control, trying to do the best we can until a vaccine &/or serum can be mass distributed. We should do everything we can to help our global neighbors.

I am NOT in favor of putting our men and women at risk over there. They get put into risk all the time and the govt doesn't help them. Remember gulf war sickness? How many had to die before the govt finally stepped up and admitted it was a real disease? Look at how the VA is so screwed up right now and has just been letting our guys die. Do you really trust them to treat them well if they get sick with ebola? I don't!!!

jacksdad,if we had a large medical force in Africa and some of them "accidentally" ran into Boko Haram, then we would find out that none of our soldiers (medical staff or guards) had any bullets. The military does this,I have seen them do this. Several years when the large number of Marines were blown up in Beirut,Lebanon---- The Marines who were on guard duty and saw what was taking place, these marine guards had no bullets to stop the truck or the driver with. The suicide driver actually actually looked at the Marine guard and smiled at him as he passed him. The suicide drive knew that the guards had no bullets. Johnray1

Its a good idea for the US Military to go in and it will be an exercise in Biological warfare training - only this time the enemy is mother nature.
Its good realistic training - I am all in favour.

I'm not so eager to 'train' our boys and girls with a real bioweapon. Sorry, but I'm a bit more compassionate than that.

nc_girl, I agree.Biological Warfare was one of the things that I trained in while I was in the Army. The reason that it has never been used in modern war,is that it can not be controlled. Ebola can not be controlled either. We will just be allowing our troops to die, just to prove that we are trying to help. The soldiers will be just as dead, and there will be no help for any one.Let the people who claim that they care about Ebola,go to Africa and prove that they care. They will also die. People who are NOT going to Africa should not be allowed to send our troops in their place. Johnray1

Looking at the military threads led me to go to the usamrid site. Looking there, I found a study showing that ebola was circulating in Sierra Leon as early as 2006. This may have been posted already but I never saw it so I figured I'd put it up

Reading the military threads led me to check out the USAMRID site. I found a PDF there showing that Ebola was circulating in Sierra Leon as early as 2006. Kinda makes me wonder how much longer it was there and what changed causing the huge outbreak. Tim |
