The H5N1 virus can travel in dust clouds from the Gobi and Sahara deeserts. From Feb to april each year 3 billion tonnes of dust settle across american soil, the dust clouds are so dense light is reflacted the UV does not pentrate and thus viruses can survive the 7 to 9 day travel time from the heart of China. The Sahara deposits about 1.5 billion tonnes from the east to the west from june to november of each year. These are now understood ways that viruses travel around the world and probably have been doing so for million of years. So is it just the birds carrying it, people traveling, birds lost in travels during storms and such, or just terrorists running around catching viruses and moving them to places they do not like so much.

Interesting.... don't know how probable, but certainly not impossible, I'm sure.  And we all know that the cooler the temperature the longer the virus survives.

I won't pretend to know the thermal make up of the lower atmosphere but I do know it's colder than ground level, and I believe that it follows a fairly standard formula.  Every 100 ft so = so many degrees or some such.
