It's me again, and the deadline for my final avian flu project is nearing (due this Wednesday).

I've decided to focus my story (it's actually a 1000-word news story, rather than a 20-page term paper like I thought it was) on the US homefront and how people can prepare on an individual level.  I'd just like to get some opinions from people here.

1) What should people do to prepare for a pandemic?  How can individuals prevent it?

2) What are the chances of it getting over here and spreading?  How will this happen?

3) What have you done personally to prepare?  How worried are you?

Your contributions will help greatly.  If I think of any more questions, I'll be sure to post them.

Middle ground

We're preparing, but not to the extreme. Provisions include:

Enough food for us and our pets for at least 6 to 8 weeks

Containers to store 30+ gallons of water

Alternate cooking arrangements

Plenty of TP, portable potty, battery operated fans, solar lights, solar battery charger, rechargeable inside lighting, candles, boots for my dog, masks, gloves, alcohol wipes, pre-moistened skin wipes, canned butter, camp oven for baking and getting my seeds planted.

We're still discussing whether or not to arm ourselves.

We live in OK and fear the heat if power is interrupted.

personally, i don't think we can prevent "it".  we're on a collision course now.  people should be stocking up on food, water, med's, face masks, etc....all of this information is shared on our message board and will provide you with all kinds of ideas.

personally, i feel the chances of the virus arriving in this country are great and i feel it will arrive either via migrating birds, or, unfortunately, someone arriving by plane or cruise ship who is already infected with h2h.

i am very concerned (worried) but also feel that i have done all i can to prepare for this and to protect my family.

good luck with your project!!!

A Day In The Life Of ia289604 - ABF   (after bird flu)

Find a place to sit somewhere quiet, close your eyes, take a deep breath, clear your mind, and imagine what life would be like from the time you get up in the morning until you go to bed without any of the following:

1.   Electricity - town water - town sewer

2.   Gasoline - no trucks / buses / trains

3.   A quarantine? -unable to travel? - people out of work? No public gathering of any kind

4.   Grocery Stores

5.   Banks

6.   Post Offices

7.   Hospitals

8.   Schools (yea hah!  unless of course you like school)

9.   Police

10. Surrounded by people who did nothing to plan for 1-9 above.

11.  What life would be like in your house, your community, your country, and your world.

Think on these things.  How would you handle each one for a 3-6 month period.  This is why people are rather concerned, and are preparing for what may just be a very awkward time.  LOL!  But - a good plan, put into effect, can make all the difference in the world.  This site may seem alarmist to many - but to many others it just may be their lifeline to the future.

I wish you the best of luck with your essay.  Don't be surprised if you get a lot of yawns in return.  People have been trained to ignore what they cannot taste, see, touch, feel, or hear.  For people your age The future is usually 'Where's the party dude!?'  At least it was for me.  I hope things have changed but I doubt it.

Please post your essay on this site after you finish it.  I'm sure a lot of us would be interested in reading it.

1) What should people do to prepare for a pandemic?  Fill their pantrys with three to six months of food. How can individuals prevent it? WASH YOUR HANDS. Proper washing (sing Happy Birthday twice, dry completely) Use Purell inbetween.

2) What are the chances of it getting over here and spreading? 100% in my opinion. How will this happen? Migratory Birds.

3) What have you done personally to prepare?  Nearly a year's worth, medical supplies included. How worried are you? Very worrried for those who have not prepared. I do not want to be in a store with paniced people trying to buy food for their families.

Answer to question #3-  I have prepared by educating myself and researching all I can about the BF.  How it works, how it transmits, how the immune system reacts to it, prevention methods.  After that, I designed a plan to cover some basics; food ( 6 months) water and water sources if/when I have to bug out, first aid, medications, etc.  Am I worried?  in the beggining yes, after the initial shock I have adopted the mental attitude of I am ready to deal with this and face it, there is just no other way around it.

Food and water for 1 year, no debt, weapons, meds, well insulated house, books on medical emergencies, cash on hand, & a good outlook on life make up my preps.  I am concerned that so few people are aware of the potential for a pandemic, but for myself, I have prepared, so I'm not scared.

My simple formula in the order of importance:

1) Educate yourself about the issues.

2) Water, either a means of making water potable or storage of enough (nearly impossible).

3) Food.  As much non-perishable as you can manage.

4) Enough medical and first aid supplies to enable you and your family to be independent of the traditional medical services we would normally enjoy.

We are just beginning to prepare. Hopefully, we will have 6 months of food, water and household supplies before the PANIC hits. We already have weapons and will get some cash on hand soon. I believe the odds of personaaly being exposed to bird flu are slim. However, I expect to be affected by the panic that follows the discovery of bird flu in the southeastern US. I assume schools will be closed when there is a threat of bird flu in the community and, being a teacher, I will be able to stay home. We'll see!

Hi Terri, welcome to our board.

May I ask at what level do you teach?

I teach high school science- physics.  It is so hard not to share my

concerns with my students. But, as a teacher of a non-

biological science, I believe it would be inappropriate.  I have told them

that I am keeping up with the "bird flu".   (I'm sure they can read

 between the lines.)

I am in the South, also, Terri.  We can't handle 1/2 inch of snow without the grocery stores emptying, schools closing and plants shutting down.  How will we ever handle the panic of BF?

Hello Kirby, and welcome. I have posted about the same comment more than once on here. I saw two women FIGHTING over a loaf of bread in a store, and it didn't snow much, was gone by the next afternoon.

Fear not flu will be the larger problem.
Don't blow your kids lunch money for things they may never need.

The major threat is going to be from looters and people threatening to steal our preps. we have guns and know how to use them.  Most people are unprepared and are not aware of what is going on.  The bird flu is real. It will sweep over the land llike a combine.  Most people won't stand a chance

Jjust got back from dollar trree and got plenty of food and canned heat. WE will not go down without one hell of a fight.
