Australia’s coronavirus pandemic plan: mass vaccinations and stadium quarantine

A pandemic could last up to 10 months with 40% of the workforce sidelined by illness or caring for family in worst-case scenario

Governments may order mass vaccinations of entire suburbs, cities or groups of people; sports stadia may be sequestered as quarantine sites; and police could be ordered to guard critical medical supplies under Australia’s pandemic health plans.

Under worst-case scenarios being contemplated by state and federal governments, forecasts say a pandemic outbreak could last up to 10 months, and 40% of the country’s workforce could be sidelined by illness or caring for family members. Australia’s GDP could take a 10% hit.

The pandemic plans have not yet been scaled up to their highest levels: Australia remains in containment mode and governments have consistently said that Australia is well-placed to deal with any outbreaks.

Currently, out of 81,000 confirmed Covid-19 cases worldwide, which have caused more than 2,700 deaths, just 22 have been identified in Australia, with zero deaths.

“Pandemic influenza can cause significant disruptions to the way we live as it has the potential to result in high levels of illness and death,” the Victorian government has warned in its action plan for influenza pandemic.

In the event of a severe pandemic outbreak, police forces may be drafted in to protect key medical supplies, with responsibility to “plan and implement security of the national medical stockpile and state medical stockpile … of anti-influenza medicine and personal protective equipment”.

Social distancing strategies, voluntary at first but enforced if necessary, could be implemented across the country. That might include quarantine in designated secure sites (such as the Manigurr-ma village in the Northern Territory); home isolation; exclusion, where people are asked to exclude themselves from childcare, school, educational facilities, workplaces and other activities; or closures of schools and

Our government has made similar announcements saying that best case scenario would be financial disruption for first and second financial quarters - but that already looks like that option is closing, so second scenario is financial disruption for the whole of 2020, and worse case is a global recession and they didn't say how long that would last. Either way, it looks like it'll be the 2nd or 3rd option now.
Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

    Mass vaccinations with what?????

    I'm all for vaccinations ........BUT

let's go through all the testing first,

I think they say these things to placate the masses

Who think a vaccine can just be made over night,

    I blame the movies ,

Where there is always a happy ending.....

Sadly most are ignorant of the facts

That one day the Calvary won't come riding to the Rescue.....

    Might be this one

    Or the Next.......

But a vaccine.....not this year if there is I wont be in the line....

This concerns me because we were only able to stock up on three months’ worth of supplies. The article says this is worst-case scenario. I’m wondering if my next move should be trying to get up to six months’ instead of “padding” my meat stocks like I was planning?

I wish I knew what to tell you. But I have many more questions than answers.

If there are people in your household over 80, yes I would prep for longer.

If there are no people in your household over 50 - you are probably fine with just 3 months supplies, as that covers you for empty shelves and power cuts.

If the answer lies between the two, especially if some of you have outstanding health concerns (specifically, immune system, heart, lungs, diabetes, serious liver problems) then IMHO, the next phase depends entirely on your risk assessment and wether your version of SIP is without contact at all, or with limited contact/social distancing.

His lips or pen are moving.

Start with the cheapest fillers such as rice and flavorings. Im sure you have done a great job.

I greatly appreciate both of your advice! I am always glad to have an “outside voice” on what I’m doing.
