The gaslighting of the American public continues...they are talking about opening up parts of the country and relaxing restrictions, while the storm intensifies, and just as Dr. Fauci projects possible 100-200k dead. As I and a few other "anomalies" predicted, this will be Trump's Katrina. He's finished, politically, in my opinion. He and his base just doesn't know it yet. Once the true story is told about dire warnings being ignored, his continued dismissal of the danger, blame shifting etc., and I believe it will be, people are going to be disgusted. They will walk away. The "Walk Away" movement will boomerang on MAGA. I'm just one of the first. I am, as they say in economics, a leading indicator. I'm done.

I was a Trump supporter and voter, my 30 year old son was too.
Not anymore. He has lost both of our votes.

Now, my 89 year old father, with Fox News on 24/7 follows whatever Trump says, which is disappointing to me, him being a retired scientist...sigh...in fact he gets very upset at all 8 of us "kids" of his when we even try to express to him to take care, stay out of Lidl (he loves to go there every single day) etc etc...oh and Costco...he loves that place too...there is no getting through to him...if it was only himself then well....but its my 88 year old mother and my 60 year old disabled sister too in their household....

Well I think you both should vote for Dementia Biden who would have NOT stopped China people from coming into the U.S.   Biden called President Trump xenophobic and racist when President Trump stopped travel.  Dementia Biden can't even put two sentences together even when reading a teleprompter.    Sure let's put that man in the White House now!  You Can't Fix Stupid!

Sorry this is NOT the place to tell anyone who to vote for and what President Trump had NOT DONE PERSONALLY for YOU.  Give me a break!  People that are not prepped are Whining all over the place if you were not prepped do not blame the President it was your responsibility to be able to take care of yourselves and your families.  But Please do not tell us who to vote for!   Dementia Biden or Crazy Hillary would not have protected us like President Trump has done you should be grateful.

Who stopped China from shipping people to the U.S. in mass on Jan. 27,  who was left with no supplies in the SNS, who was left with old CDC guidelines to response for testing  President Trump.  Who has gotten all the supply lines running, companies working 24/7 to make masks, PPE, and Vents, President Trump.  This President has people working around the clock and all I hear from people is not enough when he was facing a head wind from the get go.  This too shall pass.  When this does pass  do you want a man Dementia Biden who can't put two sentences together, forgets where he is, needs his wife to stop him when making major mistakes in memory to help him?  Vote for President Trump who will get this economy going  after this passes!  Use Your Brains Folks!

Unfortunately this is not a reality TV show where you can't re-shoot the part where the President and his advisers down played the danger and put the country 2 months behind in it's response to the pandemic.  We had a two month head start to get testing in place and buy time for the health care providers to get prepared. A price we will all pay for having a president that trusted his gut feelings that this would just "go away".  Trump wasn't blind sided, he was to busy looking in the mirror and watching FOX (Faux) news to react appropriately.

Together we succeed

IT TAKES TIME!  What you could produce an accurate test faster than this President has done.  Have you ever owned a manufacturing company?  Have you ever had to get a test up and running in short time...NO NONE of you Whiners have done any of this.   It TAKE TIME!  You all complain and WHINE about what has not been done fast enough.  WE are at least not Italy, France or Spain!   It is worse there!   You all need to quit whining unless you can do better!

It is easy for all of you to be Arm Chair Quarter backs and complain...I am tired of it.  None of you have business experience that I have had...owned a restaurant, a manufacturing plant, a food distribution company...yes I am 70 and my family and husband has done very well.  Any yes I know more that all of you what it takes to do all of this.  I have sat silent until now it is time to quit Whining and make a difference in what needs to be done now and for the good of the country.  This is all happening as fast as it can but you all sit at home and complain about nothing you know anything about.

I am happy to admit Trump is learning quite fast.

But shutting the door against the Chinese was FAR too late.  There was no way it could be stopped like that.  It was already in the USA.  A really good supply of tests, telling everyone to wear a simple surgical mask and MOST IMPORTANTLY OF ALL telling the truth at the beginning would have put America in a far better place today.

The state of America's infectedness will eventually affect me.  This is a global problem.  So don't tell me to shut up and then whine about liberals curtailing free speech.

Well you pull tests out of your butt as fast as Trump has done it.  You have no idea how long it takes to do any of this you sit in your home criticizing our President when you have most likely have NEVER owned a manufacturing company like I have, owned a family food distribution company. You sit at home and complain about OUR President...Please.  You have nothing to complain about things that do not affect you in the least!   Tell me how will America affect you...please explain!

Could this topic be moved to Politics vs General Discussion?  I think at this point in time - GD should be reserved for 'anything pandemic' specific, anything specifically politics should be put there.

However large, Trump's butt has nothing to do with this.  the WHO were selling kits and he waited for the CDC to make them instead.  That took time you did not have and the first kits were faulty.

Of course this will affect me.  Every persons death matters and what bit of a Global economy do you not get?  Even now, under lockdown, people travel between our countries.  They take goods, mail, foodstuffs and diplomatic matters.  Even were the British/American border utterly closed, Stuff would go via third and fourth party countries.  The Global economy is just that - Global.  Did you not order chloroquinne from India?  That company in India is Chinese by the way.  The use a British bank.  I don't know where their raw materials come from.

Globalism aside, if you saw a stranger in the street dying, would you not call for help, try to help?  I see Americans dying (yes my countrymen too) and I want to help.  That is why I moderate here in the first place - to give something back, to help.

It's not a case of comments for or against him (to me) it's a case of this is a 'politics' post so I just think should be there.  There has been a LOT of political chatter (and bickering) and although some is likely unavoidable within a thread, I think when it's 'purely' politics... why not put it there?  It's like - I'm not going to post a discussion on Scotland under the Canada thread.  It may very well be an important post - just miss filed.

There has been a lot of political bashing both ways - and I think we risk turning off new members who want facts, ideas, opinions on the Pandemic... jmo.

If it's to be - it's up to me!

FluMom, this whole site is about saving lives.  It is about stopping the spread of a pandemic disease.  Bringing up the whole abortion debate is as pointless as Pence praying instead of admiting condoms limit disease spread.  They limit the number of abortions people want or perform too.  Did you think Pence got that right?

My appologies, Newbie 1.  You are quite right.  I will move the thread to the proper place.  I answered without even realising where it was.  Moving it now.

What's True

The U.S. did not use COVID-19 diagnostic tests produced by the World Health Organization (WHO) in favor of producing its own.

What's False

The U.S. did not turn down an offer to use those tests (as no such offer was extended), nor was it unusual for the United States to design and produce its own diagnostic tests in lieu of those made elsewhere.

I beg your pardon KayeKaye.  You are correct.  However the first tests were available from charité

in January and the USA did not do more than 100 tests per day until March, far too late to slow the spread.

One of the early PCR tests was developed at charité in Berlin in January 2020 using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR), and formed the basis of 250,000 kits for distribution by the World Health Organization (WHO).[107]

The South Korean company Kogenebiotech developed a clinical grade, PCR-based SARS-CoV-2 detection kit (PowerChek Coronavirus) on 28 January 2020.[108][109] It looks for the "E" gene shared by all beta coronaviruses, and the RdRp gene specific to SARS-CoV-2.[110] Other companies in the country, such as Solgent and Seegene, also developed versions of clinical grade detection kits, named DiaPlexQ and Allplex 2019-nCoV Assay, respectively, in February 2020.

In China, BGI Group was one of the first companies to receive emergency use approval from China's National Medical Products Administration for a PCR-based SARS-CoV-2 detection kit.[111]

In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is distributing its 2019-Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Real-Time RT-PCR Diagnostic Panel to public health labs through the International Reagent Resource.[112] One of three genetic tests in older versions of the test kits caused inconclusive results due to faulty reagents, and a bottleneck of testing at the CDC in Atlanta; this resulted in an average of fewer than 100 samples a day being successfully processed throughout the whole of February 2020. Tests using two components were not determined to be reliable until 28 February 2020, and it was not until then that state and local laboratories were permitted to begin testing.[113]  The test was approved by the Food and Drug Administration under an Emergency Use Authorization

(Source wikipedia)

Nontheless, during the early days of the eppidemic in the USA , lack of testing allowed the disease to gain a foothold.  During this time Trump attempted to convince the public that this was a storm in a teacup and would: "most likely go away in the Summer."

There is still a determined attempt to discourage the wearing of masks in public - only loosening its hold now, 3 months in.

Listen I replied to the statement you made.  I know the CDC and WHO are full of a bunch of  idiots.   Putting in all these links had nothing to do with the original quote.  I don't know what," expert" said not to wear masks.

United States

There are anti-mask laws in many U.S. states and the District of Columbia.[1]

  • New York State's anti-mask law was enacted in 1845, to provide for public safety after disputes between landlords and tenants.[2]
  • Many anti-mask laws date back to the mid-20th century, when states and municipalities passed them to stop the violent activities of the Ku Klux Klan, whose members typically wore hoods of white linen to conceal their identities.[3][4]
  • In the 21st century those laws have been applied to political protesters such as those affiliated with the Occupy Movement or Anonymous – wearing Guy Fawkes masks.[5][6][7][8]
  • In some areas motorcyclists have been arrested using anti-masking laws.[9]

These laws have been challenged on the grounds that they violate the guarantees of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution to free speech and free association.  Some courts have weighed freedom of speech against the public safety interest, and upheld such laws.  For example, the Georgia Supreme Court found the law constitutional on the grounds that the wearing of the mask was an act of intimidation and a threat of violence, which is not protected speech.[10]  That law has exceptions for holiday celebrations, theatre performances, and occupational safety; the ruling makes it unclear if someone is violating the law if they wear a mask without the intent to threaten violence.  A three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit upheld a New York law on the ground that wearing a Ku Klux Klan mask did not convey a protected message beyond that conveyed by wearing a hood and robe.[2]  Other courts have struck down anti-mask laws.  For example, Tennessee and Florida state laws have been invalidated on the grounds that they were unconstitutionally broad.[10] An ordinance in Goshen, Indiana, was struck down based on First Amendment doctrine that specifically protects anonymous speech and anonymous association, especially for unpopular groups like the KKK.[2]

Which is fair enough.  But enforced in some prisons EVEN NOW and there has neither been an attempt to repeal or modify them.  Also, no attempt has been made to encourage the wearing of nor increase the supply of masks, in fact a culture of dismissing them has prevaled.  This goes back to the person in charge.  His take: It's nothing really, it will probably go away in the Summer.

Sorry the President isn't King.  State laws are controlled by state laws.  Did you read what you wrote?

You miss my point.  It was either OR.

He claims the credit when it works, blames other Presidents - who faced the same challenges when in power - for any leftovers and sacks any advisor he dissagrees with.

Ok so I accept he is titular head only.  Then he gets no credit either.  Which is not what his rhetoric claims.

Bottom like is other countries succeeded in rolling out tests and slowing the spread, the US failed.  Whether is was because we tried to give the private sector their cut of the profits for the test, or regulations that were not relaxed in time, it was an epic failure. Trump and the people around him giving him yes sir answers own this economic and medical disaster.  But I'm sure Trump still gives himself and A+ because the grading curve is really low for this president. I can hear him now, "This is the most powerful, extremely strong, and forceful pandemic response in the history of the world, oops forgot the tests."  A 70 year old guy at work cancer survivor told me quit being a snowflake it is just a cold, he got that right from Trump and FOX news.  I will be glad when I never have to hear Trump's bragging, dim witted, lying voice again.  Rant over.

I know this is in the politics forum, so I guess anything goes.  But I have to say MY opinion...

People speaking negatively about trump are stating facts or opinions.  Agree, disagree, whatever.

However - FluMom and Kaye Kaye - I've seen SO many of your posts that are just downright MEAN and insulting to other posters because they have different opinions.  Full of exclamation marks to further your point. And it's the same point, over and over and over and over.  On multiple posts outside of the political forum over the past couple of weeks.

I used to come to this forum multiple times a day, and was happy to read and contribute. Now I barely check in once a day - and every single effing time it's to see a totally off topic post from one or both of you that is just rude.

You've ruined what was a really useful forum.    I can only imagine how many visitors are turned off by the vitriol that shows up here almost constantly now.

I'd think the entire moderator group would be concerned about this, but apparently not.  It's REALLY a shame.

I appologise for my part KiminNM.  I am supposed to pour oil on troubled waters.  I seem to only have gasoline left.

I'm too tired of it all to even lift the can now.

I confess thoughts of leaving have occured to me.  I like to think I'm needed (allow me that conceit, please) but after this crisis, I may join you.

I don't recall following you around the board this is the second time you have admonished me .   I didn't start the political comments and didn't know i was suppose to the read the comments and not join in the discussion.  You do sound like the  typical leftist that wants everybody who disagrees to be silenced.

You know I'm 60 years old, (I know young), and in all my years, Republican for the majority of the time voted for Reagan and Bush, I have never disliked the US president until this president.  It is because in general I don't like assholes. And as a accountant, I can't get behind someone that got rich going bankrupt 6 times screwing hard working people.   But he is entertaining. If I could look passed the fact he is the most powerful man in the world and just be like, "I can't wait to see what crazy messed up shit is he going to spout about someone today".  "How indecent can he be!"  "Wow great he was really at the top of his assholdery today yeah!"  "go team!." I just can't, I'm too conservative for that craziness I guess.  Kindness empathy and compassion matter to me and I don't see that in Trump, and leaders that don't have those traits are a danger to everyone eventually. But I'm just a young kid and grandpa, what do I know, and yes this is my final political post. There is a war on, lets quit the partisan bickering for peat sake and yes I'm talking to me.

Kaye Kaye, I don't think Kim was saying you were hounding her personally.  Yes, I feel hounded too.  It is one thing to either attack a leader, or better still their policies, and quite another to attack people for opposing views.

For instance, I am neither a leftist nor a commie - I voted for the right wing this last election - not for the first time,  neither is Chuck who was a life-long Republican, or Taxman a supporter of Regan (like me).  Yet we are called Communists  and lefties.

Kim asked you not to take such a hectoring tone.  Her's was a simple request for you and FluMom to be more polite. Which I second.

If I have been as rude, then let me add my own appology here. SORRY!

I was talking about her following me.  I have tried to avoid her like poison.  I take my Beliefs seriously, if it offends they don't need to read.  If I seem rude I just don't know what to say I just was speaking my mind, not trying to trigger anyone.
