I know that DutchJosh has had several posts about bike sales on his 'scenario' thread, but they are buried in that thread.  In some of them he talked about the need to change our habits to be more climate friendly.    So here is some interesting news from Finland.   I think that this is good news

Quote Bicycle sales up 70% in June as e-bikes gain traction

[...] Sales of both traditional and electric bikes have been high since early this year, says the industry group's CEO, Veli-Matti Kankaanpää. He says sales were initially perked up by the mild, nearly snowless winter in southern Finland, and then by the coronavirus pandemic, which began to spread in Finland in mid-March.

"The effects of the epidemic on people's everyday lives last spring were the final impetus for many who were already interested in cycling. When people had to start avoiding public transport and at the same time many suddenly had more time than usual to spend outdoors, there were no longer many reasons not to try cycling for commuting or as a pastime hobby, for instance," says Kankaanpää.

As of June, sales for this year were up by about 36 percent higher than during the same period of 2019.

"These changes will probably be seen for years to come. More interesting than the sales spike is the cultural shift in how many people have discovered cycling and adopted it as part of their everyday lives," Kankaanpää says.

The business lobby says that sales of e-bikes have risen briskly, though they still only represent about one tenth of total sales. [....]

Riku-Pekka Mikkonen, head of sales at Finnish bike manufacturer Tunturi-Hellberg, says that this year many people have replaced their second car with a regular or electric bicycle.

Bikes are one of those "if you see one, buy it" items right now.
The other popular item that is the "new toilet paper" are blow-up backyard pools, or kiddie pools or any kind of backyard above ground pool. That's another if you see it buy it.

DJ-Here in NL https://swapfiets.nl/en/ is increasing its marketshare. You pay between 10 and 15€ per month and you always can have a working (e)-bike. Insurance, a flat tire, no problem. Specialy students go for it...

Where can I get a Swapfiets Bicycle?
Swapfiets bicycles are available in the following cities: Amsterdam, Arnhem, Breda, Delft, Den Bosch, Den Haag, Ede, Eindhoven, Enschede, Groningen, Haarlem, Hengelo, Leeuwarden, Leiden, Maastricht, Nijmegen, Rotterdam, Tilburg, Utrecht, Wageningen, Zwolle, (BE) Antwerp, Brussels, Leuven, Gent, (DE) Bremen, Brunswick, Freiburg, Göttingen, Hanover, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Munich, Münster, Oldenburg, (DK) Arhus, Copenhagen en Odense. Is your city not listed? Please let us know.

Most likely this kind of idea's will go around the globe soon.

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Why are people buying swimming pools?

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

Its summer here, Kiwimum.

NYC Metro area has been sold out of bikes for the better part of six weeks now.  Even used and reconditioned bikes are very hard to find.

Its summer, kids are out of school, big swimming pools that people buy memberships to are not all open due to Covid and the kiddos want to play in the water...there is a real shortage of even the cheapest, smallest wading pool.

I must not have had enough coffee when I responded, KiwiMum.  Sorry!  I imagine they're using them as outdoor bidet?  Bidets are not standard here in the U.S.  More's the pity!  I wish they were!
