For the second time Trump has called out New Zealand for it's apparent inability to control Covid 19. Today he's said that we've had a "big surge" in cases. We had 6 new cases. The USA had 40,000.

Seriously, what's with the man?

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

I am having a hard time deciding if he is very dumb or very clever in making statements that are dumb enough for his constituency to love.  Or maybe both he and his constituency operate on the same level.

What do you mean, NZ is handling this well?  Don't you know the GOO can't tell a lie?  You must have half a million dead by now!

Hubby loves, trusts and respects me, as I do him, but we would question each other's veracity for half the outlandish pronouncements Trump makes (probably 10% or less) and I have a real problem with even small white lies - I just can't do it!  Sadly, the clown's followers would believe him if he said the sky was made of orange balloons!  Fox News backs this up - probably paid for it, at least given more access/scoops/operational latitude.

The jet stream must be strong, I can pick up the stench of corruption from here.  It makes me want to puke; bad news in a mask!

And he's done it again. This time he's said there's a "massive" out break in NZ. We've had 5 new cases. He's had 43,000 in one day.

I’m afraid this forum is no longer informative about the virus but has turned into a Trump bashing political site. Sad, I used to find this forum very helpful and informative.

JellyMamma, there are a lot of other posts about what is happening.  DutchJosh usually gives a good daily summary of the information he has found, so there are regualar news items - it is just that there are not as many as at the beginning when it was new and we were trying to sort out what happening.

As to this thread, I think that it is fair that if a politician of one country makes claims about another country then that politician should be held accountable for what was said.   I thing  that it is reasonable of this forum to iook at the particular claim Trump made relating to Covid and New Zealand, a claim that he seems to have repeated a number of times.   I am sorry if it offends you to critically look at what Trump said, and that most found his claim to be rediculous.  I, however, would be very interested if you could come up with reasons why the claim should be taken seriously especially in light of how the USA has handled this pandemic.

ps. this is a personal opinion and I have no official position on this forum.

The thing is that I think most of us can agree that by every objective metric, the U.S. response to this virus has been somewhere between extremely disappointing, and a failure. The numbers don't lie.  And the buck stops with the leader, whether (s)he admits it/likes it or not.  I don't think it's personal, believe it or not.  I think it's fair to say (and I hope those who were on this site more than I was before the pandemic got started will correct me if I'm wrong), but I don't think there was very much Trump commentary on this site at all, and most of what was was in the political threads, until the Covid response was bungled, bluntly speaking.

I used to be a lurker on a well-known survivalist site.  I enjoyed the information and the community feel.  They bashed Obama constantly.  For a time I rolled with it, because the information I gleaned was worth it.  And then one day it wasn't worth it anymore and I left.  These kind of things are up to the individual to decide.  I think it's probably true that the criticism of Trump on this site will largely be coming to an end in about 5 months, and then the lens can focus on someone else.

You and I must have been at the same site.  Everything was blamed on Obama and the Democrats.  It was when I started seeing references to Q-Anon being the patriotic standard that I left.  I really wish those supporters would realize Q was a Star Trek character...  After that, the information just wasn't worth it anymore.  They must have changed the name of the forum because I stopped back a few months ago to see if the rhetoric hand changed and I couldn't find it.

Perhaps if enough people left, the site folded.  For two people to meet here with the same complaints and story just by chance, is quite unlikely, unless most people there were dissatisfied.

Oh! and I'm not a Democratic supporter, but I bashed Trump from the start on here.  I saw so many things that horrified me about him!  I'm not sure he is fully human; if he is, he is a classic psychopath.  (Before Republicans get excited, many CEOs are.  It can make a company do really well.  But this is very dangerous territory for a Country's leader.)

NZ is only a small country of 5 million people and yet we hold a disproportionately big place on the world stage. We're known for our sporting abilities, in film making, as a bucket list tourism destination, our vast population of sheep and cows and for being a chilled nation. Our national motto at the moment (and since the beginning  of Covid 19) is Be KInd. Our prime minister decided to put people before the economy and as a team of 5 million we all joined in and eliminated the disease. It's back because we're allowing kiwis around the world to come home. It's escaped quarantine and is in the community but we're trying to eliminate it again.

Our policy for tackling the virus is very different from America's, and therefore I don't think Trump should be comparing the two, particularly not to make a political point. This morning he has said that it's "all over" for NZ, implying that we've failed and it's widespread. It isn't and we haven't. And at least we're trying. We might fail, who knows, but I hope not, as life for 102  days was completely back to normal and we'd all like it to be again.

However you look at it, you can't compare 43,000 cases a day with 11.

Spring starts here next week and I've woken up this morning to discover we're sitting in a cloud, as the cloud cover is unusually low and I live by the mountains.  As I'm typing this I can hear birdsong and see daffodils in our orchard and it's all swirled in mist. It's so peaceful I feel as if the coronavirus isn't here at all.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

I just went and looked, and the site is still up, but is being run, since 2018, by different folks. In the re-vamped site's first page the new guy said that the original owner (initials MDC) had stepped away to focus on other projects.  One of the replies to that post said they were glad because they were tired of the original owner asking for donations, and then writing posts on the prep items he bought with the donations.  Wow!

His niece Mary Trump's book, Too Much And Never Enough, makes a very good case for a few different pathologies, and she is a clinical psychologist, although not without a little prejudice, I'm sure.

it's funny, Techno, but election night 2016 my mum was asleep when I got home from work a little after 11 PM.  In the wee hours of the morning she woke up and asked me if Hillary was president yet, and I said, No, and it doesn't look like she's gonna be, and I explained the situation.  My mother said, Well, maybe it will be different when they get all the votes counted from the big urban areas, let me know.  I held my tongue in my hands, but I knew.  So about an hour later, Hillary conceded.  I went in and told my mother and she burst into tears.  And I thought, Wow, that reaction is a little extreme.  I honestly didn't dream that Trump would have the gall to try some of the things he's done.  And I assumed, like most of us, I'm sure, that if he went too far out of bounds, he'd be held accountable more than he has been.  There have not been enough adults in the room i.e. Washington, DC, to hold him accountable.  I'm sure that someone in the future will push the envelope even further than Trump has.  But they will be smart and self-controlled enough not to have to brag, will keep their big mouth shut about their nefarious plans, and we will wake up one day in a totalitarian state.

P.S.  I apologized to my mother several times for doubting her reaction.  Mothers are always right.  The first law of life, lol.

Thanks Willoby, I had seen that there was that thread on Boredpanda, but I had not looked at it before you linked to it.

Nearly all were great, but I particularly laughed at walking in the mountains to get to the border with Australia.

Thanks for sharing that. It's so funny. I hadn't seen it before but as I type this I'm looking out the window at snow capped mountains. It's sunny today, the daffodils are out and the first spring leaves are showing on the willows along the edge of our stream. The swallows have started nesting under our verandah roof again. It's a hell hole here.
