Not to mention children going back to school soon.  Kids are lovely, but they are natural-born super-spreaders.  Not optimistic.

Followed by Labor Day right after that.  I am out of words. Just cannot wrap my head around this anymore.

My closest (only) family is all visiting in a tiny county in Oklahoma to close out and sell my grandma's house, the county vaccination rate is 28%, cases doubling every week, and they're sending me pics of them eating out - indoors.

I was supposed to go but cancelled because I'm high risk. I shared *everything* with them re: breakthrough cases, efficacy waning, delta changes, indoor transmission, etc. And it had absolutely zero effect on their behavior. They're all intelligent, got vaxxed at first opportunity, etc. Just ignoring it because they really wanted to make the trip.

Today is my birthday and they keep sending me pics of them unmasked in an indoor restaurant, thinking I want to see pics of them. All I see is my worst nightmare and I can't stop crying. Despite all the facts, they are clueless.

We are so effed.

Maybe not, KiminNM.  Do you know which vaccines they have had?

Assuming they have not had Sinovac, or J&J, have had their booster shots (second round) and are not already extra vulnerable, they should be fine in all probability.   Yes, there is a risk, but it is very small.

Of course, they can still spread the virus to other people.  But maybe they were masked till they sat down at the table and masked up again to leave (usual practice in bars, cafés and resturants over here).

In a global sense, things are far from over.  There are some nasty surprises yet to emerge; I suspect.  But your family are reasonably safe for now.

Happy Birthday, Kim!  So much sucks right now, but I hope you do something special for you! 🍨🎂!

Around here, and in many places I'm familiar with here in the States you seem to have two camps: those who eat out, and many of them don't mask; and those who get takeout or delivery, and they stay safe, with masks and sometimes gloves.  In my area, we are Code Orange, i.e. "substantial spread", but we have no national, state or local mask mandate.  More businesses are requiring masks in their establishments again, but some are requiring them for all employees and some are only requiring them for unvaxxed employees and "strongly requesting" them for customers.  Covid fatigue and this mishmash of rules is not helpful, but that is what is going on here.  I'd be curious to hear what is going on elsewhere, especially in other areas of the US.  What is your level of spread, and are people masking up?  What rules do your governments have in place vis á vis vaxxing and masking?

Thanks for the birthday wishes.  :-)

They all had the Pfizer vaccine, my Dad in Jan/Feb, Uncle in Feb/March, cousins in March/April.

I think *they* will be (relatively) safe. I'm over my total panic, but the stats in the area they are in are really bad. None of them seem to grasp the difference between it being safer in one area than another. Our numbers are skyrocketing here in New Mexico, and we have a VERY high vaccination rate. Where they are? Much worse.

RISK LEVEL

Our COVID risk level looks at three things: daily new cases (per 100K), infection rate, and positive test rate. Each is graded on a five-color scale and the highest risk color becomes the location’s overall risk level. The one exception is that if a location's daily new cases is green, then its overall risk level is green.

We developed our risk framework in partnership with the Harvard Global Health Institute and Harvard Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics. As there is not a standardized framework for risk in the U.S., it may not match your state or county's risk level.

They are NOT wearing masks into the restaurant, when servers are at the table, etc. (To answer your question ViQueen - most diners here in New Mexico never picked up that habit once in person dining resumed, to the dismay of every server. Same in Southern California, where the others are from. )

I'm fully in the take out only gloved and masked and even that I only did a couple of times. During the 'maybe we're safe time" I did eat out 3 times - Mother's Day, Father's Day, and one other small celebration (3 or 5 people), all outside, and I still put my mask back on every chance I had. (by the straps, not the front)

I'm more afraid they'll get it (asymptomatically, only one is high risk), and potentially transmit it to others. My stepmom has afib, I'm obviously high risk, and none of them comprehend that leaving where they are and resuming being unmasked around their normal 'pod' immediately isn't the best idea.

Oklahoma passed the 'illegal to mandate masks law', so there's no safe place there.

New Mexico is currently a mish mash. People are starting to wear masks on their own, our official policy right now is directly tied to the CDC recommendations, but allows businesses to be more stringent.

For comparison, here's Santa Fe today. Doesn't look all that bad, but our case number more than tripled today. As did our state hospitalization numbers.  Still TONS better than a large part of the country.

Thanks Technophobe!

Carbon20 - Back in the January surge a close friend's mom had a bad stroke. She had to wait hours to be seen in San Francisco because all the hospitals were full of Covid patients. They actually live an hour away from San Francisco, but they had the shortest wait.  Heartbreaking, and, so many people just can't seem to grasp that full hospitals can impact any one of us.
