My boss is saying he won't force people getting the shot,.but if your not vaccinated,you won't be allowed onto his premises......

Mind we all vaccinated,so it matters not to me ......

Carbon, I think you'll have to campaign for some kind of universal health passport where every single thing that you've done in your life will be listed, and then this can be examined when you fall sick and if you've ever done anything that could be said to have contributed to your current state of ill health, then you'd be refused treatment. Got liver disease? Sorry you went out drinking heavily in your student years. Got a skin cancer? Sorry you didn't wear any suncreen prior to 1995. Need a knee replacement? Sorry you were 10kg overweight in your 40s. Need statins? Sorry but you ate lots of corporate lunches full of red meat for years and years. Need a filling? Sorry you've always had a sweet tooth so it's your own fault.

It's a brilliant idea. Your hospitals would be empty, the budget for health care would remain unspent. It's the answer to all your country's problems. Think of the money you'd save. And it would have so many knock on effects - it would thin out the ageing population in a matter of months thereby saving all those pension and benefits payouts. It would be a positive boom for the funereal business. It would free up so much housing stock as people die off, It's a win win.

In my opinion, the mark of a civilized country is the provision of universal healthcare. That's not to be confused with selective healthcare. It's a healthcare system that treats all people regardless of their wealth status, colour of their skin, religious ideologies, sexual orientations or personal opinions. A doctor doesn't stand at the door and say "you're Jewish so I won't treat you".

The basis of a civilized society is compassion and acceptance. We're all different and yet we're all treated the same. What you're describing is a police state. If you're a square peg then you're out. And that's fine and dandy so long as you yourself fit the narrative. The danger comes when people say "but I agree with the government so I'm happy for them to legislate on this" until the day comes when the government legislate against something that you don't agree on and you suddenly discover you have no say in the matter. 

A democracy is the voice of the people, and we are rapidly seeing our democratic rights being taken away from us. You can be a blase as you like about it saying that you don't want your taxes to be spent on fat people / diabetics / smokers, but what will you do when the national list of people to be excluded from public services includes Aborigines and gays? Then people who weren't born in Australia (like you)? Where will it stop? A dictator who doesn't like dark haired people? Sound familiar?

We need to keep our humanity because when that goes, we've lost everything.

I might dissagree with you, KiwiMum, where the freedom aspect comes in.  I think freedom should be limited to only such things as do not seriously hurt others. (eg:  Drive, but not over people;  Shoot, but not at people;  Roam, but not when spreading death).  

You are spot on with that one though.  Valuing life is the true mark of civilization.

This Yank agrees.  So many of us would be alot healthier over here if there was Universal Health Care.  Our house would not have been almost foreclosed upon 3 times, and my mother would not have had to declare bankruptcy in 2017 if we had UHC.  Other countries may pay more in taxes, but Americans pay more in healthcare costs, so much of which is paid to insurance companies who job it is to decline or postpone care and interfere in what a doctor thinks is best for the patient.  And we call this "freedom".  I read a book entitled The Nordic Theory Of Everything that helped crystallize to me what freedom really is.  I highly recommend the book, especially to my countrymen.

I get that.  But it makes no sense; it would be cheaper even for them!

So: "Let's all pay more, so the poorest can't have any."  I am glad I don't live in that much of a Christian country.
