(ATTN: UPDATES with 9 p.m. case count in paras 1-3; CHANGES headline)

SEOUL, March 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korea reported 549,854 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, setting a new daily record as the country battles through the worst wave of the virus sparked by the omicron variant.

The all-time high was reported as of 9 p.m., with three hours left until the daily tally ends. The total will be announced the following morning.

Seoul reported 128,385 cases, breaching 100,000-mark for the first time.

Earlier Wednesday, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said the country added 400,741 daily COVID-19 infections, mostly locally transmitted, raising the total caseload to 7,629,275.

It was an all-time high since South Korea reported the first COVID-19 case on Jan. 20, 2020, and a big jump from Tuesday's 362,338. The previous record high was 383,659 reported last Saturday.

The daily count differs from 441,423 reported by South Korean media last night quoting a private data tracker, as the number had not removed overlapping and erroneous data that appears to have been caused after the government began to allow virus tests conducted at local clinics as official results, the KDCA said.

The death toll from COVID-19 rose 164 to 11,052, with the fatality rate standing at 0.14 percent.

The number of critically ill patients, seen as a key indicator in the pandemic response, reached another record high of 1,244, up 48 from the previous day.

South Korea has seen its COVID-19 caseload spike since early this year, with the daily tallies surging from four digits to six digits in about three weeks last month.

Despite the fast spread of the omicron, the government has been trying to take steps to regain normalcy to the most possible extent while keeping up the fight against the virus.

DJ, South Korea trend for cases +48%, deaths +44%

I'm surprised they can process that many tests in a day. Here in NZ the numbers are completely false because we don't have the lab capacity to process large numbers of tests. The government said they could process 78000 tests a day but at 35000 the system stalled and was overwhelmed. Some people here are waiting up to 7 days for test results. It makes me wonder how accurate and relevant any countries numbers are.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

Good question KiwiMum....when I look at https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/south-korea-s-public-health-collapses-as-record-400,741-new-covid-19-infections-and-another-2,138-hospitalized-in-last-24-hours or https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/south-korea-s-public-health-collapses-as-record-400,741-new-covid-19-infections-and-another-2,138-hospitalized-in-last-24-hours story...

Most of the testing may be done at home...The South Korea government (like many others) going for "living with it" so stopping official testing...(what is the point...) it would also explain why sequencing is that bad...

Europe may be the next South Korea...but also Australia-after BA.1/reopening now cases going up =26% no doubt BA.2/recombinations...but limited sequencing..."full of surprises" and still in summer...Wonder what flu-season mixed with CoViD uncontrolled will bring you down south...

(ATTN: ADDS new cases as of 9 p.m. in para 6, virus curbs easing scenario in para 15)

SEOUL, March 17 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's new daily COVID-19 cases spiked to more than 600,000 on Thursday, setting another record high, fueled by the spread of the highly transmissible omicron variant amid an easing of virus curbs.

The country reported 621,328 new COVID-19 infections, including 62 cases from overseas, raising the total to 8,250,592, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said.

The latest tally marks a 55 percent surge in just one day. South Korea has seen a spike in the caseload since it reported the first five-digit figures in late January of this year. Since then, the numbers have grown fast, surpassing 300,000 on March 9.

The death toll from COVID-19 more than doubled to a record high of 429, putting the total at 11,481. The fatality rate stood at 0.14 percent.

The number of critically ill patients, seen as a key indicator in the pandemic response, came to 1,159, down from 1,244 the previous day.

As of 9 p.m. Thursday, 393,097 new cases had been confirmed nationwide, down from the 549,854 cases posted the same time the previous day, according to health authorities and local governments.

Daily COVID-19 cases are counted until midnight and announced the following morning.

DJ...not only the burden on healthcare should be a concern, also risks of spread in non-human hosts, new variants/recombinations...

Worldometer numbers now also have 621,328 new cases, 429 deaths for South Korea...South Korea now has 1/3 to 1/4 of ALL reported global cases ?

Amid surge, S. Korea looks to end COVID restrictions

Despite the numbers, the government shows no sign of rethinking plans to remove almost all social distancing restrictions in coming days and weeks, and public opinion appears to support those moves.

Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency spokesman Lee Sang-Won.

“There is a limit to curbing the Omicron's high transmission rate with the social distancing rules that we have imposed until now. And the tough distancing rules cause a lot of social burden.”

The country has pushed back a curfew on eateries to 11 p.m., stopped enforcing vaccine passes, and plans to drop a quarantine for vaccinated travelers arriving from overseas.

A decision on whether to ease further measures, such as a current six-person limit on private gatherings, is expected as early as Friday. South Korea also mandates masks in all public indoor and outdoor spaces.

Though it never adopted a "zero COVID" policy and never imposed wide lockdowns, South Korea once used aggressive tracking, tracing, and quarantines to control new cases.

Nearly 63% of the country's 52 million residents had received booster shots, officials said, with 86% of the population fully vaccinated.
