Newbie's first post- I'm another one starting down the road to prepping. Got my Tamiflu 'script today (10 cap dose to start, more to come!), and layed up another stock of food from Sam's Club, working on getting 1 yr's worth +/-, so far so good! While traveling back from the store, the street leads past a regional park with lots of trees, a lake and attendent water fowl. That got me thinking what their fate may be if/when TSHTF and starts to drag on, will we witness urban deforestation when folks start taking trees down that line the streets and parks, not to mention their own yards, to get heat during the winter? I stoped and watched the ducks and geese and thought their days may be numbered also- hundreds of them populate the lake and even though they may be infected with the virus, people (the freaked unprepared masses) may still eat them if they feel cooking them good will make them safe enough. Any thoughts from others in this regard on what we may see/have to do if we go H2H during the fall and winter season?

I think you're exactly right. People will even be burning anything that even might be flammable to keep warm. I have a bad feeling it could be a bigger mess than even I anticipate if the BF actually hits.

I like the idea of burning the ducks to keep warm.

It would definitely be ugly. Burning anything to keep warm.  eating anything that doesn't eat them first.

I just spent 48 hours without electricity and I don't like it. I didn't like the  person I became. I thought I was pretty hardy, but apparently I'm not.

48 hours without a warm meal and I was ravenous- without a shower and I  could hardly stand myself.  I can't see myself killing an animal for food or cutting down someones tree fur fuel, but after the last 48 hours I'm beginning to believe that anything could be possible

The thing I will miss most is ice-cold milk (I put the glasses in the freezer before I will pour milk in them.)  I adore milk and have never tried the powdered milk before.  However I have bought several large containers of the powdered milk and several cases of the canned milk.  Silly, isn't it?  Does anyone out there have any suggestions for making the powdered milk taste as closely as possible to the real milk?  Searching on the internet says you can freeze your gallons of milk, esp the 1% and 2%.  I may have to resort to that, but it really takes up too much room in my freezer.  Also, does anyone have any idea how long you would have to run your generator every day to your freezer to keep the stuff frozen?  Thanx!

re the generator.
Somewhere I read that if you run it for 2 -4 hours daily it will keep everything frozen. But you check I may be wrong

I don't know how many hours daily, but I know it kept 2000 w Honda generator going full time to keep power to a big and smaller upright freezer and refig. We burned through a lot of gas too.

Defintely dont plan on a generator being your only back up if  the grid goes down. With a 2000w we had only our freezers, fridge and one light. I dont know if more could have been run, but I did'nt want to test it. Needless to say we're buying a much bigger one and finding a way to store fuel.

With your stored fuel, make sure you put the fuel preservative in the storage cans if you plan on having them sit around for a while in your preparation stash. If you don't the gas will eventually seperate and turn into nasty crud. Then when you end up needing it real bad it's not going to work and end up ruining your day.
