OK, now I've created both a journalist's and teacher's point of view page. I hope they are not redundant to other existing stuff, I've just arrived here and haven't finished looking around yet.

As someone who does both (journalism & teaching), I feel I have a responsibility to share those perspectives for whatever they're worth (which, sometimes, is absolutely nothing, HA!).

If you're a journalist or teacher, please join me - our background can help what's going on make sense to others who don't have our background.

IF YOU ARE A TEACHER AT ANY LEVEL: Think about how you can make understanding of avian flu/pandemic a part of what you're already doing in your classroom. In my communication theory class, I told students their group projects (on various, diverse topics) must ALL include at least one sub-point on how their topic connects to avian flu/pandemic. So now those 27 students are at least looking at the available information, thinking about their lives, and sharing what they're learning with their families. (Not to mention that their research will be of great value for those involved with local preparedness efforts).

Mission accomplished, and it wasn't that hard. Anybody can do this in any classroom, and everybody should, I think.
Time's up. It's here. If you're not ready, you should have been - we all were warned.

I am a teacher in the International School here in Finland.

I have recently put together a full course curriculum geared toward young children ( ages 2 to 10). If anyone is interested, PM me care of this site. I have a wealth of material as well as sites where one can download resources.

Prof -- welcome to the site. This sounds like it will be a great help. Not aware of any other thread like this yet. Just so we can direct people there, where did you post it? -- Libby

Hope I didn't post it in the wrong place; I'm not very forum-familiar yet!

Welcome again.

One thing I have been looking at is internet usage during a pandemic. I have looked around and there are not many sites/blogs that cater for teaching via the internet. You may not agree of course because there are loads of sites used for teaching.

What I mean is ask yourself how are you going to carry on teaching your standard subjects if the unspeakable happens? You may have no face to face available to you at all for several weeks. Should it happen during critical times like exams, etc. how do you get some continuity? See my point?

Anyway I have a contingecy blog (in profile) doing nothing at the moment. Just biding time, and hoping I never have to use it. I also dont yet know how to develop it to serve my purposes beyond links to uni and to here of course!

Saw an ambitious one with video instructions embedded in. That is a good idea but time consuming. How long have we got? We dont know.

Welcome Prof. Ferguson and Trish. We are glad to have you with us.

Prof. Ferguson, just keep posting your ideas here. :) As this thread evolves we can move the thread to a more appropriate location later, if the need arises. We are here to help!

I look forward to all the info!

And Trish, I have a 9 year old daughter, I would love to see your curriculum.

You're so right! No one at my university has started speaking of this openly, that I know of. However, as a universtiy, we would likely close during an outbreak and/or have buildings pressed into serving the sick.

My plan so far, such as it is, is to keep all my lessons on CDS and in PDF versions, so I can get them distributed quickly via internet if needed. Our campus also has things like Moodle, Blackboard, etc. that students are already comfortable using. Question is, would we have the necessary connectivity, not to mention electricity, to keep that going?

So much to figure out, and no one  knows how much time....
