Zambia : Report Bird flu alarmists, Nchelenge residents told

April 22, 2006, 1 hour, 56 minutes and 55 seconds ago.

By ANDnetwork .com

THE Ministry of Agriculture has urged Nchelenge residents to report any unscrupulous people claiming to be from the ministry who are going round claiming bird flu had broken out in the country.

And ministry of agriculture has banned the movement of poultry and poultry products across districts without authority from the veterinary department.

Making the announcement at the Newsmakers Forum organised by the Press Freedom Committee of The Post, agricultural assistant Busuman Banda said it had been revealed that some unscrupulous people purporting to be ministry officials had been going round the country telling people to kill their chickens because bird flu had struck.
"It has been discovered that some people are going round saying they are from the ministry telling people to kill their chickens, because there is bird flu," he said.

"Please report those people to the police, they are not workers from the ministry."

Banda also announced that the government had banned the movement of poultry between districts without a permit certifying the animals disease-free.

"Even if it is dressed chicken you cannot move with it to another district," he said.

"Make sure you get official documents from the veterinary department."
He advised people who had chickens not to let them get close to the water bodies such as the lake, as it was one way of introducing the disease.

How strange!  Why would anyone go round spreading false rumours of BF.  NB the govt is restricting chicken movements.  Maybe they're not the govt either, but another bunch of maverick criminal rumor mongers.Beth
