Spirit62, good for you!! I'm still new to give much advice, but I've spent hours here reading, taking notes and making a loooong list. This is the best place, IMHO, to learn and prepare. I believe many lives will be saved from the knowledge given here! 2ifbyC, I found some 30 gal new drums for $20, but not sure if they are safe for storing water. Not sure yet how a person is suppose to know. I know nothing has been in them before, but not sure the material they are made from is safe. I ask this before, but what do you guys think of metal drums for storing water. I can get them for $8 and they were used as dry food containers. http://www.watertanks.com/category/6/ this place has water tanks - 305 gal for 292.00. Seems like really good ones. |

Hi all! Back to the subject of milk again. Has anyone tried the table cream that comes in cans? Often, I see it in the Mexican section of the store. I wondered if it is any good, and if it is creamy, maybe you could use that to "emulsify" the powdered milk, as seen in the above post. Also, there are dates on the liters of coke I have bought. Do you think these are pull dates? Does anyone know how long you can store pop in plastic liter containers? I just assumed a very long time. Thanx

Hi Spirit,
You need the basics first, food...rice, beans, oils, canned meat and veggies, pancake mix and syrup, dry milk, lard, jerky, instant potatoes, soup, spam, tuna, flour, peanut butter, sugar, salt, spices, macaroni and cheese...are some suggestions. Some folks buy dehydrated food on the internet. Easy to cook foods that don't need alot of energy to cook. Rice and beans store well. And water, figure a gallon a day per person. Extra medications that you take now, over the counter meds for flu, fever, etc., pedialyte or gatorade. If you search on the site, there is a recipe for home made pedialyte. If you can't find it, I'll look it up. You will need heat and light, depending on where you live. Flashlights, candles, oil lamps/lanterns, matches, lighters, batteries, rechargable batteries with a solar charger. A wide mouth thermos to cook in. Coleman stoves, or propane stoves/heaters, sterno. Depends on what you are comfortable using. People mention having a porta-potty so one doesn't have to walk far if they are sick. This is a start...please ask any questions you may have. We are all here to help each other. Tea4Two |

I just placed on order at www.myFoodStorage.com for hard white wheat, instant milk, egg mix, whole powdered eggs, sour cream powder, tomato powder, hash brown potatoes and brown rice.
Everything is in cans and no additional shipping charges. They have lots of things. I was tempted to get the 6 gallon bucket of wheat, but I have quite a bit of flour stored now. I wanted to add to my preps and none of this stuff will have to be repackaged. I'll just have to find space to store it. |

I have been cleaning. Just a warning out there- never buy a house that has 3 bedrooms and one small closet only(not even a coat closet or a linen closet) I threw out alot of stuff this week. I want to be able to have room for preps, plus I figured it would be easier to keep clean without all the clutter. On Monday I am shopping for more preps.

Welcome.
Start here for some lists, customize them to fit your needs. Buy only what you eat and prepare to rotate. Write everything you buy down so you don't have to do an inventory (or two) later.
simple recipes, menu plan and ingredients neccessary:
Consider your water source first and foremost: without H2O you're dead within a few days. 2 gallons/per person/per day (1 gallon is subsistance for a short time only). 2 gallons is for drinking, cooking and minimal washing. What about flushing toilets? Water for pets? If you have room, think about an inflatable pool, relatively inexpensive and hold a lot of water, also need either plain bleach or pool shock.
Medicines, OTC meds, pet food, baby food, heat & cooking source (no electricity).
Start with the basics and then add on. Make a plan from the lists so you don't buy things needlessly. Go for one week, then two, then a month and so on.
Let us know if we can help
Good luck

This week I organized my storage area (again), labeled foods by expiration date, tried out my solar battery charger, printed out lists and procedures (how to purify water, how to can, sickroom protocol, etc.) and put them in a binder. I know if I lose access to the Web, I will panic and forget everything.
I also have printed out flyers with all media events on bird flu I could find and posted them in all my neighborhood stores, laundromats, etc. I made up a more personalized letter, including the media info, and went door to door on my street leaving one for each family. We are on a dead end, with about 12 houses. If everyone on our street is prepared, it will be better for all of us.

I went through my pantry which had been filled by putting anything
anywhere. Now everything is grouped together by category and I know
exactly what I need to buy. In the clutter was an old roll of inch wide
masking tape. Because it peels off easily I stuck pieces on the edge of
shelves under food that expires this year and wrote the expiration
dates on the tape.
I have several empty notebooks, a hole punch and plenty of paper to make my reference manuals. However the computer printer has died and has to be added to the Buy list. |
