Codlea, a city of 20,000, was put under a quarantine Wednesday, with workers disinfecting passing cars and residents prevented from leaving the city for six days. Eight of the ten localities where bird flu has been detected are in the central county of Brasov where authorities have culled thousands of birds in recent days.
You must learn the past, in order to understand the future.

This is the kind of approach that I expect to see in the U.K. if the virus actually mutates. Its far more efficient than having people wandering around aimlessly.

Fagaras town totally quarantined

Avian flu outbreaks have been formally declared in the Hurez village (Beclean commune), on the Codlea platform and in the town of Fagaras (Brasov County). Fagaras was quarantined Sunday night, and the authorities have begun collecting all the birds in the locality to be culled. The trader suspected by the authorities of having sold ill birds says he’s innocent. The Police have stated that the merchant was being investigated and possibly charged with tax evasion and unauthorized marketing of foodstuffs. All the 120,000 fowl in Fagaras will be incinerated in the ecological landfill near the locality. The traffic on the national road across Fagaras is normal and the vehicles are sprinkled with disinfecting solution when entering and when exiting the locality. Cars in transit are banned from stopping in the city.

"All birds in the central city of Fagaras were to be culled as a precaution, and the city was put under quarantine, authorities said. Residents were to be given the antiviral drug Tamiflu"

BUCHAREST (AFP) - The manager of a major industrial poultry farm in Romania was arrested early on charges of allowing the farm to sell chickens possibly infected with a potentially lethal form of bird flu, prosecutors in the town of Brasov said.

The unnamed manager is the third person from the Drakom Silva poultry operation in Codlea to be arrested in the last few days. The farm's veterinarian, Virgil Udrea, and its owner were both arrested on Wednesday, as was Pati Prod, the owner of another poultry farm in the town.

The two owners have been charged with "spreading disease among animals" and could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Udrea is accused of knowingly allowing the sale of contaminated live birds to private farmers, according to prosecutors.

Romanian Agriculture Minister Gheorghe Flutur said on Friday that the bird flu virus has continued to spread across the country.

Speaking on Romanian television, he said 20 outbreaks had been confirmed over the past week, bringing the number of localities affected to over 60.

He also reported two "possible" cases on the outskirts of the capital Bucharest. An additional 26 sites were being investigated for possible contamination.

"Samples from a dozen of these sites have been sent to the British laboratory in Weybridge," Flutur said earlier friday, referring to the European Union's reference laboratory for bird flu tests.

"We expect results early next week that will tell us whether the strain is an especially lethal (strain)."

The highly virulent H5N1 strain of bird flu can be transmitted to humans and is potentially fatal.

Flutur said the authorities had seized almost 325 tonness of chicken product from Drakom Silva that might be contaminated with bird flu.

There has so far been no case of human contamination from the animal disease.
