FluWrap: Avian flu causes havoc in Indonesia

Indonesia this weekend saw further deaths from avian influenza among increased reports of suspicion and poor health practices in the North Sumatran village that has seen the largest infection cluster confirmed thus far.

Thirty-seven deaths in Indonesia have now been attributed to avian-influenza infection.

A brother and sister from Bandung both died from the disease on May 23, marking the seventh family cluster found in the country. The World Health Organization confirmed that their deaths were the result of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza on Monday.

A 14-year-old girl from Solok, in West Sumatra, has been infected with the disease, an Indonesian Health Ministry official announced. There have been no reports of her condition.

Johannes Ginting, the sole survivor of Indonesia's largest infection cluster, is still in hospital but is refusing all manner of treatment for avian flu, officials from Adam Malik Hospital have said.

Nurrasyid Lubis, deputy director of the hospital, was quoted by the Charlotte Observer as saying: "Johannes doesn't want to be injected, doesn't want to take Tamiflu or other antibiotics. ... We had actually given masks and gloves to the family, and we informed them how dangerous this disease is, but they didn't cooperate with us. We also informed (Johannes) how dangerous it is, but he didn't believe us."

The situation in Indonesia -- which has seen half of all deaths from bird flu worldwide -- is further complicated by suspicion on the part of local villagers. This column reported last week that villagers outraged by their loss of income following bird culls had taken to public ceremonies in which they kill birds with their bare hands and drink the blood.

Now villagers in Kubu Sembilang, site of the aforementioned largest cluster, refuse to believe that the deaths were a result of avian influenza, instead blaming black magic.

The villagers are wary of the fact that seven members of the same family fell ill, apparently as a result of being in close contact with each other, yet none of the villagers who cared for the family has shown any signs of illness. The issue is further complicated by the fact that the WHO has so far been unable to identify how the first family member to be infected initially contracted the disease, as none of the animals in the vicinity of the village has tested positive for H5N1 antibodies.

In previous clusters, however, only blood relatives have been affected -- spouses and in-laws have remained disease-free as grandparents and cousins have fallen ill.

But the suspicious villagers have taken to avoiding the house, which they say has been cursed and is haunted by the ghosts of the dead family, for fear of falling under the curse themselves. Instead, they have been cutting the necks of chickens and drinking the blood, proving themselves free of the curse.

    Meanwhile:

-- The Cambodian government is struggling to spread awareness of avian influenza in the face of limited resources.

Cheoun Uork, whose 3-year-old daughter recently died from bird flu, had not heard of the virus until several days after his daughter died, ContraCostaTimes.com reported.

"Had I known about such a warning, I would have taken better precautions to protect my daughter," he said. "She was my only child, and now I have to live with regret over her death."

Due to budgetary constraints, the Cambodian government was forced to focus its bird-flu awareness resources on the five provinces deemed to be at greatest risk of infections and outbreaks. The remaining 19 provinces have seen little in the way of information and methods of disease prevention.

But even in those five provinces where the efforts have been focused -- those bordering Thailand and Vietnam, both of which have seen a number of outbreaks -- there is a sense that the message is not getting across.

Ly Sovann, head of disease surveillance control at the Cambodian Health Ministry, told ContraCostaTimes.com: "Sometimes, people are enjoying music on the radio, and if a commercial or education spot pops up after the song, they will switch to another channel for more music. That is why face-to-face communication with villagers is more crucial for training and encouraging them to take part in prevention of the disease."

Megge Miller, a WHO epidemiologist in Cambodia, was quoted as saying: "There's obviously a lack of awareness in this community (about) what bird flu is. When we went into the field, families were asking questions, 'What is avian influenza? What is this about?'"

-- Russia is beginning the clinical trials of an avian-influenza vaccine produced by Mikrorentgen on 240 human volunteers, MosNews.com reported.

The volunteers, all of whom are over 18, have been selected form groups identified as being at high risk of contracting avian influenza, including those who work at poultry farms.

Over the course of the trial, which is to last five weeks, the volunteers will be injected with the vaccine before returning to their normal lives, periodically monitoring and recording their body temperature.

This place is ripe to start the impending pandemic.

that's nonsense, if he survives, his blood would be ripe to be harvested to find out what antibodies he developed.    He could be a very valuable commodity.

Please settle down folk...you are making me nervous.Keep your ears to the ground as ever, but keep in mind the fact that we may all actually survive/avoid this flu that has been doing its bird thing for years now.I am heartened by the fact that so few people have succumbed to obvious BF in all the time it has been circulating.I read the same info. on the web that you do,but I am not as panicked as some.Sometimes peoples' minds are so far open for disaster scenarios that their brains fall out.Keep your ears down but chill out a bit?

Well, Ops, that would be a nice, unsecured experiment on the effects of low and high levels of radiation on H5N1 mutation rates!  LOL

It doesn't matter how many people have contracted avian flu so far.

The point is that the virus may/probably will mutate so that it is easily spread from person to person.

That is what everyone is so concerned about.

Born cynical, H5N1 Bird Flu has been circulating for decades as a bird intestinal virus, but sometime around 1996 or 7 it mutated into a High Pathogenic strain and started killing Humans via lung infection. I know several doctors who believe that THAT mutation occured in a Chinese Bio Weapons Lab and escaped from same in late 1996.

Regardless, it happened and people were first reported to have died from the HP H5N1 in Hong Kong in 1997. In that initial HP state, it could not spread very easily and only occasionally broke out in clusters in human populations (More often individuals became sick and died and their deaths were recorded as "Pneumonia.").

It continued to spread in China but all outbreaks and deaths were covered up and listed as Anything But Bird Flu (ABBF). It spread to North and South Korea and to Vietnam where initially the deaths were dismissed as Dengue and a host of other diseases/illnesses and the deaths from "Pneumonia" skyrocketed. Everybody was in denial or feigned ignorance (Either out of actual ignorance or because of political/economic reasons.)

Finally in 2003 Vietnam got tired of the obvious coverup and admitted to Bird Flu in their country. They were also afraid of the death toll and decided to count them correctly in some provinces in the north and south. Other provinces continued the old practice (ABBF) as did China. India was having a major problem with spot outbreaks both in people and eventually in animals (I call them Brushfire Outbreaks because they flare up and die out.), but India always denied that it was Bird Flu. They called it "Mystery Illness" and consistently refused to identify it. They still do in most parts of India.

Then last year, after the wild birds flew north from India and Southeast Asia into China for the spring and summer, a horrific outbreak occured at Qinghai Lakes in China. Bird Flu had mutated (most likely in India) and became a cross species killer of any and all animals. (Read the Boxun Reports out of China at that time.)

It is this new strain that is doing most of the killing, not the old strains. I call this new strain Sichuan Sheet because of the Chinese coverup in Sichuan China in mid 2005.

Whatever it is finally called, it is the most evil strain of virus ever seen on the Earth in recorded history. It kills, Birds, Cats, Dogs, Horses, Cows, Swine, Monkeys, Whales, Fish, Gorillas, Man and many other animals. Man has not seen a cross-species killer like this before.

We now have Sichuan Sheet plus fu sheet.

Fu sheet is the apathy and lack of concern for the bird flu, the belief it is a made up illness by foreingners. . By people who have lived their lives in illness. poverty ,death ,starvation for years without the rest of the world caring

Joe,
How do you know all this stuff? I don't doubt it to be true, but I've been researching H5N1 for the last year or so and haven't seen that. It's not that I doubt you have, I just need better research techniques. Help me out if you can. I realize I may sound a little like a kindergartner asking for help understanding 'War and Peace'.  If so please disregard.

You've got to go back and read the news articles and the stories that expose the vaccination program in India that went haywire. India, by the way, denies everything, but the birds they sold on the international market have had antibodies for H5N1 for years now.

If you openly post your understandings on this and other boards, you will find that others who have been working in the field will communicate with you. When I posted a year ago that I thought that the Red Chinese probably were responsible for the mutation from LP to HP, I received a large number of e-mails from people who worked in the bio weapons field. Their more recent information led them to believe that HP was of Communist origin.

I was a Naval Officer (1977- 1983) and as DCA on board the USS Peleliu also carried the title of Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare Officer. At the time, I read as much information about that responsibility (NBC Officer) as possible and was well aware of the massive Chinese Bioweapons program.

The possibility of the Red Chinese developing the HP strain of H5N1 is strong, but you will note that there is no confirmation of same, only suspicion. The world will never know as long as the WHO keeps the sequences hidden from those who would expose them.

The rest of the information included in my post above is in the news stories. You have to have been reading them as they occured. The Boxun Reports had a wealth of information. Chinese doctors from the mainland will tell you that there was a massive increase in Pneumonia deaths in China from 1997 onward. It doesn't take much to put the pieces together.

Sadly, the WHO wants us to believe that HP H5N1 first appeared in Hong Kong in 1997 and then disappeared. It then reappeared in 2003 in Vietnam along the border with Red China. Is there anybody foolish enough out there to honestly believe that Bird Flu was absent from the world between 1997 and 2003? It was the cause of all the pneumonia death increases in China and neighboring countries (like India) during those years..

I am, in complete honesty, TOTALLY naive to so much of what you have discussed above.  Thank you so much for a great discussion and the amazing research and reporting/recording that you have done!  This background makes a great difference in understanding how this whole BF scenario is unfolding. I'm grateful to folks like you, Joe who have these abilities. Clap-k
