Saudi Arabia executes 37 falcons after bird flu virus' discovery

RIYADH, Jan 28 (KUNA) -- Saudi agriculture ministry said it executed 37 falcons after laboratory tests showed five falcons infected with a bird flu virus.

A ministry statement said the infected falcons were discovered during a recent visit by a veterinary team to a falcon center in Riyadh, one of the measures to examine safety of birds.

The team took samples from 37 falcons in the center for laboratory tests and found five falsons carrying the H5 virus.

The team decided to execute all falcons then burned them, said the statement. (end) od.

Hummm,

This COULD be from the introduction of an infected falcon from another country.  Remember the eagle smuggler that got caught in Belgium(?) a number of months back.  But given migration of birds if it's not there already it will be soon.

Thanks for the catch Muskrat!

Sounds to me like it has already started.  The sand in the hour glass just hasn't quite emptied yet.  Reports are coming from everywhere of people still falling ill and perishing.  Another couple of months and the infected migratory bird will be here.  Perhaps an infected news reporter or soldier will come back with it sooner.  I think I will watch the Stand again for some pointers before hell has us all.  The U.S. Government allowed Dr. Osterholm to go live on national T.V. and tell us all.  We have been warned.  Bush is worried.  That makes me worried.

Quote it executed 37 falcons after laboratory tests showed five falcons infected with a bird flu virus.

"executed" is an interesting way to put it.

and why cull 37 if only 5 had it??

I'm not afraid, I'm paranoid. Dont talk too loud, they are listening.

Spread_fear,
Do you think that there has been efficient h2h spread already?
I am concerned that this might be happening and that countries are either covering it up or not investigating thoroughly enough.

Any thoughts , opinions, comments?????

I believe that in Saudi Arabia it is quite sporting to hunt other birds with your trained, and probably very expensive pet falcons. The falcons probably caught it 'on the fly' so to speak.   There  are probably a couple of nervous sheik types with sore throats, runny noses, and a hacking cough, and possibly many, many sick birds flying around which are now easier to catch by other 'falconers'.  "Best day ever" says Abdul - cough! cough!

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

RIYADH, 20 January 2006 — The Health Ministry issued a statement
yesterday saying that the Kingdom is free of the avian influenza virus
following a recent outbreak of bird flu in Turkey.

“The Kingdom banned the import of birds from all countries last year. It
banned the import of birds from Turkey last September. This limits the
chance of the virus getting into the Kingdom. As for migrating birds, the
Ministry of Agriculture’s effort is continuing.”]“The Kingdom banned the

I don't think you have any worry about it going H2H at this time.  If it does go H2H, you'll know as soon as you see your neighbors dropping like the birds are.  Getting the virus from Saudi Arabia or anyother place where the H2H starts isn't going to take but a day or so before it is in your own backyard.  Does anyone know the incubation period for this virus?

http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/avian_influenza/en /
The incubation period for H5N1 avian influenza may be longer than that for normal seasonal influenza, which is around 2 to 3 days. Current data for H5N1 infection indicate an incubation period ranging from 2 to 8 days and possibly as long as 17 days.
