In view of a human case of avian influenza H5N1 in Shenzhen, the Hospital Authority (HA) started the three-week Enhanced Surveillance Programme from June 15, 2006.

HA today (June 20) received the report of a total of 14 cases (8  male,  6  female, aged 2.5- month to 85).  So far a total of 70 cases (39 male, 31 female, aged 2.5-month to 89) have been received.  These patients have visited Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei, Fujian and Zhejiang before the onset of symptoms.  HA has reported the cases to the Centre for Health Protection.  Public hospitals are providing rapid tests for these patients.

This seems like a very good tracking program. An article posted here mentioned Leavitt has asked our hospitals in the US to track pneumonia cases to try to contain BF when it erupts in the US.

I just so hate this. Because of the mistrust I feel for 'certain authorities', I have to sorta go on gut instinct mixed with facts, and with this whole HK thing, I have mixed feelings. My logic tells me (based on what others on the board have said about China being 'hyper--vigilant' and how common pneumonia is) that this is nothing at all. But, my gut clenches at the implications of 'what if they are wrong??'

Truth is, this scares me, and then I am annoyed with myself for feeling that way based on the many factors pointed out by others. Ermm

Hong Kong has a good surveillance program. This program started 5 days ago and they now have 70 cases of pnuemonia. Follow your own common sense and remember the govt has said each city and state are on their own. Hospitals are not going to be able to cope with these infections esp since healthcare workers will be coming down with it also. Follow your own common sense and apply logic. STAY FOCUSED AND IN REALITY. This is what you are prepping for.

with rapid detection tests shouldn't some of these cases be eliminated? Unless the rapid detection tests show positive and now they're awaiting definitive test results?

Good point, rodin33, I think thats why this concerns me. I would think that with this new quick test, if they had shown up negative, they would have been shouting the great news to the reporters by now.

Does anyone know what the "average" number of pnemonia cases would be for this time of year? Is this high, low or average?

jofq, read the thread about Hong Kong 33 suspected cases. There is a big discussion there about pneumonia.

I guess they have run out of testing equiptment in HK so now its just a guess, kinda like going to the doctor in US with flu symtoms. No tests and a bottle of antibiotics.

So do you think that they are just monitoring these people with pneumonia symptoms . . . not actually testing them? i.e. if you pass the incubation period and get better, you are free and clear?
