And there was a zoo also in America a few weeks ago that found their tigers had Covid too. Apparently their keeper had it.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

https://zooatlanta.org/update-on-zoo-atlanta-gorilla-population/

The infections occurred in an area of the Zoo where COVID safety protocols are already at their most stringent. The use of PPE when working with great apes was already a standard practice at Zoo Atlanta due to their susceptibility to many of the same illnesses experienced by humans, including the common cold and influenza.

Although masks and gloves were already worn by the Gorilla Care Team when team members were inside the gorillas’ indoor areas or preparing outdoor habitats, additional preventive measures, such as N95 masks, Tyvek® suits, modified cleaning protocols and increased ventilation in the gorilla building, have been instituted.

Team members never share the same physical space with the gorillas, and all interactions take place on opposite sides of a barrier with social distancing in place where practical. Team members also adhere to strict PPE protocols and social distancing guidelines among themselves, and PPE being used by the Gorilla Care Team is the same as what would be seen in human healthcare environments.

Did you see that TV series about the Australia Zoo? They had trained some of their animals to come up to the bars of their enclosure and press their shoulders to the cage, and then their keeper would pick up a syringe and press it against their shoulder, and then they'd get a treat. When one of their gorillas needed to be knocked out for an op, the keeper used a syringe with appropriate medicine in it and it all worked like a charm. It was so impressive. No tranquillizer darts being shot at them. Presumably any vaccination can be given like this. Fyi, it apparently takes 2 years to train an animal to do this, but it's such a clever idea.

(Bloomberg) --

A snow leopard died after displaying symptoms similar to Covid-19 at a U.S. zoo housing a confirmed case of the virus, officials announced Friday.

Baya, age 2 1/2, exhibited signs of a cough followed by “inappetence and lethargy” and died Thursday, according to the Great Plains Zoo in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A necropsy is planned.

One of the zoo’s Amur tigers tested positive for the virus that causes Covid-19 this week, the zoo said. Other big cats have exhibited symptoms.

Almost 200 dog and cats.

Washington, D.C., November 5, 2021 -- The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) today announced confirmation of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) in two spotted hyenas at a zoo in Colorado.  These are the first hyenas confirmed with the SARS-CoV-2 virus worldwide.

Samples from a variety of species at the zoo, including the hyenas, were collected and tested after lions at the facility showed signs of illness.  In addition to the two hyenas, eleven lions and two tigers at the zoo also tested positive for the virus.

I can't think of a case of seasonal  flu infecting  animals so readily,

Am I mistaken  ?

Is this unprecedented  ?

It's really scary if Covid19  can infect animals so easily, the  chances  of mutations  must increase by a factor of 10x10.....

Take care all stay safe

With the deer being infected then passing it to the herd,I wonder if consuming venison could you contract covid? I doubt if we will know because H2H  transmission is common,

Infected deer may end up being eaten by dog/cat like animals in the wild...without cooking the meat...So yes it will spread further in other non-human hosts. As long as it does not spread in hunter animals-after eating a deer-that problem may stay limited.

However, certainly in cat-like animals the virus does seem to spread. Spread=mutation=variants...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Long article,snippet

https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/zoos-have-started-vaccinating-animals-against-the-coronavirus/2021/10/21/e07d6caa-26d0-11ec-9de8-156fed3e81bf_story.html

Zoetis, a former Pfizer subsidiary, started by focusing its research on cats and dogs, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture “said that they didn’t feel like cats and dogs were going to be a significant concern, so we parked that program,” Mahesh Kumar, vice president of global biologics research and development at Zoetis, told me. The company then shifted toward making one for minks, whose pelts are a nearly $50 million industry in the United States. From that program of vaccines, which Zoetis tested on minks, the company was able to provide batches to the San Diego Zoo for its primates.

“Obviously, we are not able to individually license a profile for every species. It’s not practical,” says Kumar. “So what we decided was to [develop] a vaccine formulation that was safe for all animals.” Soon, Zoetis was “inundated” with requests from zoos and, in July, pledged to donate 11,000 doses to nearly 70 zoos across the country. In total, the company has made about 4 million doses so far, most of which have gone to the farmed minks

The animal vaccine has some similarities to the human ones, though they were developed differently. Like the Pfizer vaccine, the Zoetis version is designed to be two shots given three weeks apart. Vials of the vaccine also require refrigeration and need to be used within 24 hours of being opened.

But the Zoetis vaccine doesn’t employ messenger RNA like the Pfizer or Moderna human vaccines. Instead, it uses a viral spike protein created in a lab. When injected, it triggers an immune response in the animal’s body. It’s a technique that Zoetis has used before to create vaccines for animals. In terms of efficacy, Kumar says, it’s similar to the human vaccines.

So far, according to zoos, the side effects appear to be minimal, perhaps even less so than with humans. Only one brown bear at the Oakland Zoo, according to Herman, seemed to experience soreness at the injection site after receiving the vaccine.

Zoetis is planning to ship a second round of vaccines in the coming weeks to zoos to immunize mammals that veterinarians and keepers view as most at risk. This list includes primates, big cats, mustelids (such as river otters, wolverines and ferrets), canines (wolves and coyotes), bears (including pandas), flying foxes and hyenas.
