Gulf summer kills bird flu

Bahrain: 38 minutes ago

The hot summer weather of the Gulf region will protect against the bird flu virus, agriculture and municipalities ministry animal health director, Dr. Salman Abdulnabi Ebrahim told Bahrain journalists. He said hot temperatures prevent the virus from spreading rapidly.

When the bird flu was first identified in India, the press released similar statments about hot weather preventing its spread. Considering the spread of H5N1 over the years in the tropical countries of Asia, these statements can be easily dismissed as blatant lies.

It may be that the flu will spread faster because people will be crammed together in small spaces to take advantage of air conditioning.  I live in Phoenix--almost as hot as Saudi Arabia--and I have seen some of the nastiest pulmonary infections in the summer.  People travel more (especially by air) in the summer, providing more direct vectors for the spread of virii.

Time to open the windows and set out the fans!

P.S. It might be a bad idea to place bird feeders near open window fans...
