It seems H5N1 is making a comeback in Vietnam, and the new strain they're seeing in the north is not covered by the current poultry vaccine. Six months to two years of development and testing is going to be required before a new one is available, and the way H5N1 mutates I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't mutate past the new vaccine by then.
"Bird flu specter rises again Last Updated: Friday, February 10, 2012 08:20:00 Experts say greater vigilance and prompt action are needed to prevent the virus from spreading to epidemic proportions. Le Thi Bay raises dozens of chickens in her back yard that are slaughtered on special occasions like the death anniversary of ancestors. She has never had the fowls vaccinated against bird flu, except once several years ago when local authorities offered free vaccinations for chickens and ducks following an epidemic of the H5N1 virus. “It’s only a couple of chickens. Many others who breed small number of chickens at their house also don’t have them vaccinated,” said the retired midwife in Long An Province’s Chau Thanh District. Just before the Tet (January 23) festival, she gave her relative in Ho Chi Minh City two chicken who brought them back alive although it is illegal to transport live fowl into the city. The chickens were later slaughtered for a meal as an offering to deceased ancestors – a traditional ritual conducted on the third day of the lunar year. The rearing, consuming and gifting of chicken is common practice. This has prompted experts to warn of low awareness of the dangers posed by bird flu that claimed two lives last month - an 18-year-old man in Kien Giang and 26-year-old woman in Soc Trang province. “Many farmers have ignored the crucial preventive measure of vaccination and often panicked once bird flu spreads,” said Nguyen Xuan Binh, director of the Animal Health Agency No. 6 (The agency monitors animal health issues in HCMC and the provinces of Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, Dong Nai, Binh Phuoc, Binh Duong, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre and Tay Ninh). Duc, owner of a large chicken farm in Long An, said only those breeding thousands of chickens at a time like him have their fowls vaccinated because the possible damage is significant. A vet in Long An, who wanted to remain unnamed, pointed out that it was dangerous for farmers to ignore vaccination or refuse to cull diseased fowls. “Many farmers go to local veterinary medicine shops to buy bird flu vaccine. After learning that the vaccine is only sold at the provincial animal health department that is far away, they just ignore the vaccination,” he said, adding that the vaccine should be sold through private vet medicine shops for better prevention against the disease. He said that during the spread of bird flu over the past years, many farmers refused to hand the animals to local animal health authorities for culling just because of some delay. “The government has supported farmers who have culled diseased chickens. The support per chicken is sometimes higher than the market price but the farmers still sold their fowls for quick money,” he said. Risky trade Meanwhile, the illegal trade of live chickens and ducks in HCMC thrives, posing a greater risk of the spread of the H5N1 virus. A quick tour around the city found live chickens and ducks being sold at many places, including Le Duc Tho, Ben Xom Cui, Pham Hung and Pham The Hien streets in Go Vap District and District 8. Phan Xuan Thao, director of the HCMC Animal Health Agency, said the city has formed a mobile task force including the traffic police, market watchdogs, animal health agency and youth volunteers to act against illegal fowl trading on the streets. “However, local authorities should monitor those places more closely because they often resume trading of live fowls soon after we leave,” he said. With just four stations at entry points into the city, Thao said they can only inspect the transport of big consignments of fowl. It is difficult to monitor small loads, he said. Bird flu first hit Vietnam in 2003 and it has killed and led to the forced culling of millions of fowls in Vietnam. A total of 119 human cases had been confirmed as of March 2011, including 59 fatalities. On February 5, the Department of Animal Health confirmed a recurrence of bird flu in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang after 90 chickens in My Xuyen District’s Ngoc Dong Commune died and tested positive for the disease. Soc Trang was the third province, after Thanh Hoa and Quang Tri in the north-central region, to report the recurrence of bird flu this year. Experts have stressed the need for multiple preventive measures because even vaccinated fowl may contract the virus. “Poultry producers and the general public should always take simple precautions to reduce exposure to the virus from infected poultry,” the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a statement. “These include extra vigilance in cases of sudden disease and death in poultry, rapid reporting of disease to the authorities and good hygiene practices while handling, slaughtering and preparing poultry for consumption,” the statement said. There is no evidence to suggest yet that this new strain of the virus, spotted in August last year, carries any increased risk to human health, it added. The antigenic variant that still belongs to clade 2.3.2.1 genetically, was first detected in Vietnam in January 2011, and had been confirmed only in two northern provinces by July 2011. “A vaccine is required for protection of poultry against the antigenic variant detected within the clade 2.3.2.1. The work on this has already started in leading laboratories. Fortunately this 'variant' virus within the new clade 2.3.2.1 is having limited geographical circulation among poultry at the moment,” the statement said. Santanu Bandyopadhyay, senior technical coordinator at FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) Vietnam, said the high pathogenic avian influenza virus circulating in Vietnam since 2003/04 is already very virulent for poultry. “There are some viruses within this new 2.3.2.1 (strain) in Vietnam from which poultry could not be protected at all by the current vaccine. Just remember that this new clade including the non-protectable 'rogue' viruses are in the north only so far,” he said. “The current vaccine is able to protect poultry against the majority of the viruses in the new clade 2.3.2.1 and also the existing clade 1, if properly vaccinated,” he said, adding that the new vaccine for poultry may take between 6 months to 2 years to develop with all safety and protection parameters completed as per international protocol." http://www.thanhniennews.com/index/pages/20120210-bird-flu-specter-rises-again.aspx?flv=1 |

Another death attributed to H5N1 in Vietnam, and concerns that cases are not being treated quickly enough. You'd think Vietnam's record with the virus would make then as vigilant as other countries - like Indonesia and Hong Kong - when it comes to patients exhibiting flu-like symptoms.
"Vietnamese people and health officials became lackadaisical in their approach to bird flu during the nearly two years with no reported human cases, experts said at a meeting in Hanoi Tuesday. According to a report on VnExpress, at the meeting experts pointed out that the country’s first two victims after the reprieve received treatment very late, which led to their deaths. In fact, the first victim, an 18-year-old man in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang, developed symptoms on January 10, but was not hospitalized until four days later, and died on January 16 Meanwhile, a 26-year-old pregnant woman in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang had a check-up at a local hospital on January 23. Although she was diagnosed with a fever and a sore throat, she was given home treatment. Two days later she was hospitalized, but was not given Tamiflu, the antiviral drug used to treat bird flu, for an additional two days. She died on January 28. “It is probably because after a long time of no human cases, health officials did not suspect that the symptoms were related to the H5N1 virus,†said Nguyen Trong Khoa, deputy chief of Medical Services Administration under the Ministry of Health. He also asked people to be more careful and go to hospital immediately if they have flu symptoms and have come in contact with poultry. Nguyen Van Kinh, director of the Hanoi-based National Hospital of Tropical Diseases, also said that Tamiflu needs to be used right away whenever there is any suspicion of bird flu. “We do not lack drugs and drugs are available. What matters is to detect the disease soon to decrease the risks of fatality,†he stressed. Agencies should resume training sessions, reminding health officials to give patients quick diagnoses and treatment for H5N1, because after nearly two years everyone almost let their guard down, according to Kinh. Meanwhile, Nguyen Tran Hien, chief of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, was concerned about the public's apparent ignorance. “The problem is that due to the epidemic’s long absence in humans, people misbelieve that it has gone, so they still eat the frozen blood of ducks, trade and butcher poultry,†Hien said. In the meantime, Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long warned that the A/H5N1 virus in poultry seems to have mutated since it has resisted current vaccines, so there is a chance that it will soon breakout widely again among poultry. Since the beginning of this year, three provinces of Vietnam have reported bird flu’s recurrences – the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang, along with the central provinces of Thanh Hoa and Quang Tri. Since 2003, bird flu outbreaks have killed and led to the forced culling of tens of millions of fowl in Vietnam, which was categorized among the countries most affected by H5N1. According to a World Bank report in October last year, 119 human cases were confirmed in Vietnam as of March 2011, of which 59 were fatal." http://www.thanhniennews.com/index/pages/20120208-vietnam-officials-people-let-guard-off-facing-bird-flu-risks.aspx |

In 2006 the US was going to develop a Bird Flu Vaccine after Australia developed theirs. The version that we chose to use for our vaccine was already out of date on the date it was chosen, which goes to show you that the CDC is not too swift on keeping up with current events.

New strain of swine flu detected
<>
st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) }
VietNamNet Bridge – The Heath Ministry has quoted sources from the Ho Chi Minh City Pasteur Institute confirming that a new kind of porcine flu virus, A/H3N1, has appeared, apparently a combination of the pig-related A/H1N1 and A/H3N2 flu viruses. Therefore, the sector has not ruled out the possibility of a mutation in the A/H3N2 strain which could lead to transmission between humans, instead of strictly from pigs to humans as previously. However, the situation has not reached an alarming level because the virus has not changed much; it has low toxicity and has shown no sign of drug resistance. Flu vaccines are able to cope with small changes in this kind of virus, said Le Hoang San, Vice Director of the HCMC Pasteur Institute. * Bird flu found in two more provincesThe avian flu epidemic has recurred in the southern province of Bac Lieu and the northern province of Ha Nam. The Bac Lieu Animal Health Department has found hundreds of fowls dead without apparent reason since early February. These fowls included more than 200 ducks in Nha Mat ward, Bac Lieu city, and another 250 ducks in Hong Dan district. Samples taken from the dead ducks tested positive for the A/H5N1 flu virus. Given this, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development allocated one million doses of bird flu vaccine for the local district and city. The province has taken all necessary preventive measures to head off the epidemic, and not only in the affected areas. The local broadcasting station was asked to instruct local people on how to manage their domestic fowls and to caution them against eating blood pudding or slaughtering sick fowls. * Meanwhile, on February 9, the Ha Nam provincial People’s Committee declared a state of bird flu epidemic in Nhat Tan commune, Kim Bang district. The local veterinary department said more than 2,500 ducks have been found dead in a farming area in Nhat Tan commune since February 7. Samples from these ducks also tested positive for the H5N1 virus. A delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has been dispatched to the province for supervising efforts to contain the epidemic. So far this year bird flu outbreaks have been detected in five provinces, namely Ha Nam, Bac Lieu, Thanh Hoa, Soc Trang, and Quang Tri. VietNamNet/VOV |

HI ALL
given that news,and i belive it's impossible to mass produce a H5N1 vaccine, H5N1 is that virrulent ,that it kills all of the eggs or a very high percentage of them, it's not real hard to grasp the outcome WHEN... H5N1 ,H1N1,H3N1,H3N2, reassort into the " SLATE WIPER",and the way i think that will be a good outcome for this planet, TOO MANY PEOPLE!!!!!!

Suzi15, I agree with you but some will live and some will die. All we can do is do our best to prepare to keep our families alive. With these dumb scientists discussing IF to tell the world how to make a deadly H5N1 we are in real trouble.
Watch Stephen King's The Stand again it is a movie telling the future just like Buck Rogers. |

This is a hard one because I'm a parent, but as a species we're a threat to ourselves and many other species, and we're not showing any signs whatsoever of addressing the problem of overpopulation and it's consequences. It will become the biggest problem we ever face, and in just a few decades. Greater population densities will bring with it all kinds of issues, disease transmission among them. Whether we feel it's justified, inevitable, deserved or whatever - some really bad things are going to happen as a consequence of our arrogance as a species. We'll bring this on ourselves unless we get a lot smarter real quick, and I have my doubts that we have the capacity to do that before nature makes the first move.

Human overpopulation is the elephant in the room when all environmental topics are brought up--global warming, etc. It is just never dicussed. I think China had it right. Limit the children people can have. Of course here in the US, it would be unconstitutional. Look at the 19 kids and counting television show. Wow. What a footprint that family leaves--I think it is disgusting. I don't care how well-behaved the kids are.
