Suspected bird flu cases on rise across the country

Wahyoe B. Wardhana and Fadli, The Jakarta Post, Malang/Batam

Suspected bird flu cases are being detected in the country at an alarming rate, with more people falling sick in Surakarta in Central Java, Madiun and Malang in East Java and Batam in Riau Islands province.

An as-yet unnamed 12-year-old girl suspected of contracting bird flu died Wednesday night after being treated at the Moewardi Hospital in Surakarta.

Her body has been sent to her hometown in Boyolali, Central Java, for burial, hospital director Mardiatmo told Antara.

Blood tests for the victim have been sent to a Jakarta laboratory for confirmation.

Another seriously ill suspected bird flu patient is being treated in isolation at the hospital.

"Clinical symptoms, including coughing and a high fever, indicate that he is bird flu-positive. The patient also used to live near large-scale quail breeding centers," Tri Lastiti, the deputy director of the hospital, told The Jakarta Post.

The 31-year-old man, identified as Daryoto, was believed to have been infected by the carcasses of dead birds, which had been dumped in the area during the past month.

"Thousands of quails died every day and their remains were just thrown away into a nearby river," Nanik, Daryoto's wife, said.

Central Java Governor Mardiyanto said earlier the provincial administration would launch a large-scale poultry cull of infected birds. The culls would occur in five of the province's 35 regencies -- Karanganyar, Boyolali, Sukoharjo, Sragen and Klaten.

Mardiyanto ordered people to be on the alert for the virus and immediately report any suspected bird flu outbreaks among poultry to their local animal husbandry office.

"If people see scores of chickens dying, they should report this to the nearest office. Animal husbandry and health officials will soon follow up their reports," Mardiyanto said.

In Bandung, the number of suspected bird flu patients rose by 11 to 66 as of Wednesday. The latest patient was admitted to the city's Hasan Sadikin Hospital on Wednesday.

In Madiun, East Java, the condition of a 12-year-old patient from Singkil village, Ponorogo, who is believed to be infected with the virus, remained serious.

"The patient is still in intensive care by our team of doctors, and cannot be visited yet," a Dr. Soedono Hospital spokesman said Thursday. A sample of the patient's blood has been sent to Jakarta for testing and the results would be available within a week, the spokesman said.

In Malang, a seven-year-old boy was admitted to the intensive care unit at the Saiful Anwar Hospital with suspected bird flu symptoms.

However, Gatoet Ismanoe, a doctor of the hospital, said the boy, who had earlier been treated at the Muhammad Saleh Hospital in Probolinggo, was still under observation to determine his illness.

In Batam, the local animal husbandry office sprayed disinfectant at Panglong village in Nongsa district Thursday, after laboratory tests found bird flu in the area's poultry.

At least eight chickens were found dead in the area with blue and swollen heads -- recognizable symptoms of the flu. (With additional reporting from Suherdjoko in Semarang, Blontank Poer in Surakarta and Yuli Tri Suwarni in Bandung). http://www.thejakartapost.com/detailheadlines.asp?fileid=200 60303.A04&irec=9

The Bandung situation is worrisome.

The Jakarta Post doesn't have this as their top story.   They act like this is
just another casual news story. Maybe this explains how things got out
of control there......

So blue is the colour is it. That's the best description of symptoms of BF I
have seen. However does it B2H and give the human victims a shade of blue
on their faces and heads that swell up? That would really focus the masses
to take this matter seriously. Maybe some pictures would do it.

if they haven't got the word out by now. we're screwed. Indonesia is on the same level with Africa, They should cull the government there,  and oh yes. you must see "scores of chickens" dying before you report them. We ought to just  NUKE the whole area right now.

Ahhhhh.  We do in fact have some big things going on.  This is the one region in which all suspected cases seem to turn out to be positive.  This is also the region for the Sichuan Sheet H5N1.

"the number of suspected bird flu patients rose by 11 to 66 as of Wednesday. The latest patient was admitted to the city's Hasan Sadikin Hospital on Wednesday."

11 pateints to 66 indicates that H2H transmission is significantly increasing.   We should also assume that they have more patients than the 66 suspected, assuming they are not being 100% open - as seen in the past.

We seem to have an explosion of human cases going on.   I guess this is the "emergency" that they were talking about.

Does anybody have a lead on those 10 suitcase sized nuclear weponds that were lost in Russia?

If Osanma doesn't have them or some other black market group can I get a few?

I need them for a trip out of town.

Guess where I'll be going?

I expect that the nuclear agreement is part of a different end of the world scenario, namely Peak Oil.  The U.S. figures it can only afford to fend off one growing monstrous economy in the near term: China.

In the movies, they detect the outbreak in 2 days, our heroes IN THE INFECTED AREAS come up with the vaccine by themselves  in 2 more days, and save the little boy who is gasping his last breath.

Observe reality, please. A rapidly rising increase in suspected cases, and in A WEEK or 2 after death, we will verify what the first REPORTED death of this particular outbreak was caused by.

Perhaps, Just perhaps, they really mean 11 NEW cases which brings the total over the time that this thing started to 66.

Although I've always had a gut feeling that it would start in Indonesia, I was hoping that it wouldn't, don't they have the strain with the highest mortality rate?

ATTENTION: Albert, There is NO mention of H2H. "11 pateints to 66 indicate that it is spreading much faster than SARS  did.  H2H transmission is significantly increasing." ATTENTION ALBERT! There is NO mention of H2H, just B2H. Let's stick with the facts as we know them.

Spot on Annie...

Different strain and highest mortality rate...  And in many cases unable to trace the source.

It requires a very unusual mind to undertake the analysis of the obvious. (A. N. Whitehead, British Philosopher 1861 - 1947)

SINGAPORE, March 3 (Xinhua) -- A multilateral pilot project aiming to control avian influenza in Indonesia will begin with the preparation phase immediately, according to a statement issued by Singapore's Ministry of Health Friday.

The project involves Singapore, the United States, Indonesia, as well as the World Bank, the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

Officials from participating parties met in Singapore Friday to discuss the details of the project, including the scope, project site, time frame and activities, roles and responsibilities of the partners, as well as the project budget.

Estimated to cost about 4.5 million U.S. dollars, the three- year project will be carried out in Tangerang Municipality of Indonesia's Banten Province, which covers an area of 200 square kilometers and has a population of 1.5 million.

It aims to implement Indonesia's national plan for the control of bird flu to reduce the prevalence of H5N1 bird flu there and test out how recommended approaches work on-the-ground. Experiences and lessons learnt are expected to be applied to other areas in Indonesia.
