With all the new variants out there, cause to believe they could be more contagious and deadly.....how is everyone feeling?  I always said if a more deadly one broke out where people were dying within 24 hours, that I would start to take more drastic steps in my daily life, but we haven't seen that yet.  So at what point, even with the new variants, do we keep the course or start to truly believe things have taken a turn for the worse and change our daily lives?

Long before '24 hours to kill'.  The longer a disease takes to kill you, the better its chances of infecting the next victim.  That is one of the true horrors of Covid 19/ SARS 2.

I have always been worried by this one.  Let me clarify: not terrified, but worried.  It never ticked the "slate-wiper" box, even though  it does have a couple of the attributes necessary (other hosts, airborne -ish, long incubation/ infected period).  But it did tick the "society-smasher" ones - all of them (novel, contagious, long time ill, kills enough to terrify a few, but enough survive to make a few complacent).   We have added our own support to covid's, already significant, damage with cover-ups, conspiracy theories and political posturing.

Effective vaccines have arrived to save our systems - in the nick of time, but if there are enough mutations that one of them gets around the vaccines before herd immunity is achieved, things could still turn much nastier.  Countries, consortia and federations fighting over the vaccines make things worse too.

So for now, I am  cautious, worried and saddened, but not all that actively scared.

Personally I think the most worrying trend at the moment is complacency. I read yesterday about the growing unrest in Italy where, under the lockdown, all bars and restaurants are supposed to shut but there's a wave of non compliance sweeping over the country and bars and restaurants are opening up again regardless. I read that there has been an attempt at a media blackout about this in order to try and keep civil obedience, but I'm quite sure that we'll see this happening everywhere before long.

There's only so much that people can take, and as a small business owner myself, I know full well that governments furloughs don't pay enough. 80% is no good if your daily life takes 98% of your income. There's only so long your savings will last. When it comes down to it, financial security is key and without it some people would rather be dead. It sounds dramatic but each and every day people commit suicide over debt. So all those small business owners out there have probably already come to the conclusion that they'd rather be open for business and take their chances with the virus than bankrupt and see everything that they've ever worked for vanish.

So it comes down to the question of how long will the dam hold? If it's not already there (and personally I think with the rise of populism in Europe it was already there) then very soon it'll reach breaking point and then there will be no lockdowns. Then it will be up to everyone who wants to shield to isolate themselves and let everyone else get  on with it. You can arrest one rule breaker in a town, or even 10, but you can't arrest the whole town. Once it starts I don't think the authorities will be able to stop it.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

Physically I'm tired. Mentally I'm like why is there so many damn stupid people in my state? Lol. Our governor has been one of the more lax, we don't have a mask mandate, he left that up to the individual cities and towns to decide, so many here don't even wear a mask. The governor DID pass a temporary law for bars to close at 11PM instead of the usual 2AM. That went on for a couple of months until the bar and restaurant association to the state to court and got  it overturned. So they are back open until 2AM. Loads of drunk people probably not wearing masks........

I was watching the news last night and two things scared me.  They were showing the South African strain and a town down there as the ambulance arrived(don't remember the town).  The camera was on and showed them giving CPR as the doors opened.  She died on route.  They said it was the 3rd death just that morning.  They also said they had verified that someone tested positive to the S. African strain and had existing antibodies in their system to the original strain.  These things are concerning to me.  IN addition, if you look back historically at 1918, they always downplayed the truth of how bad things were until they couldn't any more.  So I am wondering if we are seeing the whole truth out of Brazil.

I usually don't get really scared though and you can verify that I am not a huge poster in general.  For some reason though, this has me a little freaked out.  Not terrified yet, but freaked out for sure!

I am ready for this to be over.  One daughter had her high school Senior year totally changed up by Covid-19 and I am beginning to wonder if my youngest will have anything like a normal Senior year. (She graduates next year.) And the fact that there is even a possibility for this to still be around next year is hard to take.  A few months didn’t change the course of my teens / young adults lives, but a few years will.  Also, I wonder if our world can handle the stress of the virus without blowing up. Can we get out of this without ending up in war?  I guess I am feeling pretty pessimistic right now.

You're right to be scared. Dr John Campbell on YouTube yesterday said that genomic testing on Covid cases was less than 1% in the US, compared to 100% in NZ and Australia and somewhere inbetween for Europe and the UK. So no one really knows what strains are circulating in the US or how widespread they are. Stay safe.

In my opinion,

These mutations represent the True

 "Second wave"........

And with people getting really more and more agitated about lockdowns ,

Antimask, relaxing when it's way to early.......

This is not going to get better any time soon......

When Dr Fauci says he is worried about the South African mutation......

I start to get more "interested"......!!!!!!

Worse case scenario....

Recombination of SA, Brazilian mutation.....

Probably all ready out there.......

Take care all 😷😉

If a person looks at all the evidence, this is what collapse looks like. The decline of energy and  other vital resources, and the collapse of the biosphere, is being hidden in the fog of politics and war. Holding on to false hope will lead to depression. You have a lot more agency than you think you do. Prepare for a challenging decade, and learn to be okay with uncertainty. Don't pretend that "things will get back to normal", both with yourself, and with your family.

My plan was to get the vaccine, and when it had taken full effect, get back out into the work force ASAP.  Now with the variants abounding, taking over, and each one, as you would expect, drifting a little further away from the original virus, I'm kind of edgy.  How effective will this and future vaxes be against present and future variants?  I am very grateful for unemployment compensation, but sooner or later, I have to get back to work.  I'm at the age now where it is harder to get hired.  Employers frequently prefer younger employees that they can pay less to, even If older employees are frequently more reliable.  So I am concerned.  And yet I value this time with my mother.  She is 82, in heart failure, bad kidneys.  I wouldn't trade this time with her for anything.

Better late then never, I suppose....

I'm sure some of you may have noticed I've pulled back a fair bit. Stress has gotten to me, I think. The holidays were the worst. Zooming just isn't the same as a hug. My family realized I was not in the best frame of mind after I read my niece's boyfriend the riot act for whining about her cancelling her flight to spend New Year's with him. I basically told him to grow a pair as I hadn't seen a member of my family, much less gotten a hug in a year. He could survive until she got vaccinated. Good family that I have they stepped up and have been getting calls regularly and I am enticed into better moods by plans for when we're all vaccinated.

I'm in a better frame of mind lately. I'm one of those people who have to hermit and sort through things. No, I'm not having "those" kinds of dark thoughts. I admit I'm still having some issue motivating myself.

Oh and I gained 12 covid pounds.... grrrr....

Witchy, when things are getting too much for me I take solace in the words of Julian of Norwich, a 14th century anchoress walled up in a cell in the wall of St Julian's church in Norwich in the UK. She stayed in that little room for 20 years with people bringing her food and she was the first woman to write a book in English, and she said (amongst other things) "all shall be well, and all shall be well, and in all manner of things, all shall be well".

It doesn't sound like much but I have repeated those words over and over again over the years and she's right. All shall be well. Eventually. As the Persians say "this too shall pass". And it will. We just have to plot our own individual course and stick to it.

I was able to visit the church of St Julian's in 2019 when I was in Europe, which after years of reading about her, I found it really lovely to actually visit the place where she lived, wrote her books and presumably died. Now all I need is to build myself a time machine to go back and actually meet her..................

Well I'm not sure how I feel lol. I was on furlough for the first 3 months when this started but then called back to work and have been working ever since. I would rather be at home lol. The thing that hits me the most is my youngest granddaughter was born after covid started. She doesn't know anything different. She is not growing up normally, at least her sister's remember what normal was. She is almost a year old and has not been around any other kids except her siblings, hardly any adults but her parents, hardly been out anywhere etc.
