New Delhi, April 4, IRNA

India-Maharashtra-Chicken Gunia

"Around 31,000 people have been affected by "Chicken Gunia" in 209 villages of Maharashtra.

Maharashtra Health Minister Vimal Mundada today said cases of malaria, dengue, chicken gunia and typhoid were found in Nasik, Pune, Aurangabad, Latur and Akola regions and so far 13,921 patients affected by such type of fever have been identified at 90 places, PTI report said here.

Dr Mundada told mediapersons in Mumbai, capital city of Maharashtra that the blood samples of nearly five percent patients are being sent to National Institute of Virology, Pune to check up whether they are suffering from dengue or chicken gunia. Both the diseases spread through mosquitoes which breed in stored water.

As a precautionary measure, cleaning of water storage tank and other sources of stored water, was advisable once a week, the Minister said.
She said the word chicken gunia has been derived from the Swahili language of African countries and clarified that it is "not connected with bird flu."

She said chicken gunia was first detected in 1953 in Tanzania and in India it was detected in 1963 in Kolkata. In 1964, it was found in Chennai, Pondicherry, Vellore, Vishakhapattam and in 1965 in Rajahmundri, Kakinada and Nagpur. In 1973, the same fever was found in Barshi and later in Yavat village of Pune in 2000.

Dr Mundada said the gestation period of chicken gunia is around three to 12 days and added that the disease is not fatal.She also said there is no vaccine for chicken gunia or dengue, but both are treated as per the symptoms."

Boy, even google hasn't heard much about 'chicken gunia' except to say it is similar to dengue fever.  Does anyone else know anything concrete about the fowl disease?

I think it is probably some colloquialism(or reporter error) referencing Chikungunya.
I had a little bird,
his name was Enza;
I opened the window,
and influenza.

I've read that before.  Spell it Chik for short and count up the numbers.

It is a mosquitoborne disease in the tropics, causes arthralgia (bonepain) and is discussed on the WHO site and CDC sites. There have been some recent outbreaks in combination with Dengue fever. Chikungunya wiki is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chikungunya

I never realized how many humans and animals die daily of unusual disease or circumstance.
