Im thinking of creating a system for instant messaging and alerts so that a desktop program can be run to keep people up-to-date with developments.

Would anyone else be interested in an msn-type client program which sits on the desktop and keeps you updated?

Just a thought, doing this for freinds and family all over the world, and wondering if anyone else would use such a facility

2ciewan,

Makes sense. Would consider if there was someone at the helm who filtered out the trash and sent "good" info.

Reports from Niman, Webster, Woodson, WHO, CDC, etc. . .Send first sentence of first paragraph and the link to story. . . Hmmmmmm

Sounds like a great idea. I'm thinking though instead of cluttering it up with just day to day news that we can get from any number of sources, including this one, that it might be restricted to CONFIRMED instances of H2H. Just a thought......

Yahoo has some new desktop widgets.  It would be a way to get it out there for people to use.

I won't know how to set it up.

2ciewan,
Yes, I would definitely be interested.  Sometimes I don't have time to go to several websites to get latest updates.  This would be very convenient.  Thank you.

Thanks for your comments, all noted...

I think it needs to be a human system, rather than just grabbing headlines, and i think its really important at this stage that it just sends important information and confirmed cases, i know my desktop has enough clutter as it is!

Im working on the server as we speak.

I like the idea of widgets also Gexydaf, should be able to use them also.

At this stage im going to use it for getting important information out, but if the worst happens it will come in very handy.

Ok, its up and running folks

We've deployed a new instant messaging system based on the Wildfire server and Spark IM client that has strong security and a lot of great features. Getting up and running only takes a few minutes. Download the installer from the links below.

Once you've performed the initial installation, the client will automatically notify you when updates are available. Once the client starts, enter your username and password along with the server name uktextalerts.co.uk. Please visit signup page to get your username.

2ciewan: Okay, so I downloaded the installer and visited the signup page. Now to logon your dialog box asks: User name, password and server. What answer do I put for "server"? Thanks,

In the server setting is uktextalerts.co.uk

This is the basic version of the client at the moment, new version will be all singing and dancing in a few days.

The new client will have the server address saved as default.

When the client is running you will be sent any alerts straight to your screen.

You also have the option to add other users to your client, so you can use MSN style chat, this is up to you if you wish to add contacts, personally im using it to keep intouch with family all over the world.

In a pandemic situation i dont think it would be too long before MSN and the internet service providers might stop working due to lack of human staff!, so i figured this might buy a little more time for fast comms!

There are also conference rooms for live chats - which i will open up as and when demand is high enough, perhaps we could even get some experts to do a hosted chat- any takers?

You will be alerted to any important updates regarding the situation at the moment, plus in an emergency situation the system will send out PDF downloads and instruction advice. (being created at the moment).

The server itself is located in germany, and is fairly fast, it will support up to about 5000 users, but i am looking to extend the system to other servers to provide more capacity and back-up.

This is all self funded, and will remain free to users.

Im also adding an extension to allow broadcasted alerts to be sent via SMS to mobile phone handsets in the UK. If there was enough demand i could look at extending this to the US also.
